The Police – Synchronicity I Lyrics 12 years ago
It has been said that this album might have been a double album and a lot of material was left on the cutting room floor due to in fighting of the members. With so many hits and just the occasional song that does not hit the mark this could be true. I wonder how many songs were walked onto later Sting solo albums?

Sounds like a day in the life of Charles Bukowski.

The Police – Shadows In The Rain Lyrics 12 years ago
I have never understood why someone interjects some other poetry, unrelated to the song as a review, comment, or opinion. Why? Explain how this is relevant to this song or any other? Is this an influence that was drawn upon to write this song, some sort of inspiration? No. It is just someone just showing their ass isn't it?

The Police – O My God Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this falls into the "reoccurring theme" category rather than plagiarism.

Reincarnation and Buddhism. You may find yourself in many different lives and not feel like you belong there and should be somewhere else.

Hazel O'connor – Rebecca Lyrics 12 years ago
Great song for a lost friend. Probably captured her friend quite well. It is a celebration of a friendship remembered and on going through memory.

Pink Floyd – The Post War Dream Lyrics 12 years ago
There has always been a rash of suicides of Japanese youth due to the stress to succeed there is so great. Yes, there were Kamikazes in WW2 and they are still committing suicide there to this day.

Pink Floyd – Southampton Dock Lyrics 12 years ago
Ah, but I do not think it is Thatcher that is in "quiet desperation" - it is Britannia. Thatcher would not be desperate, it was something she was looking forward to.

Pink Floyd – The Fletcher Memorial Home Lyrics 12 years ago
Many leaders have applied a "Final Solution". Pol Pot. Rwanda. Bosnia. So much for never again. The UN, US, NATO have all allowed "Final Solutions" to take place albeit on a smaller scale. Tell those that died it was on a smaller scale. Roger Waters isn't trivializing the Holocaust - just saying it is still happening and World leaders are either letting it happen or directly causing them.

The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics 12 years ago
It was written about a disturbed teen shooting. Her house was across the street from an elementary school and she shot kids from the window in her house. The incident happened in San Diego, CA. She is still in jail and has been up for parole about a half dozen times. She will most likely never get out of jail as she still exhibits disturbing behavior and keeps changing her story about what caused her to go on her shooting spree. One the first of many teen (school) killers and probably (not confirmed) influenced the short story "Rage" by Stephen King.

The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics 12 years ago
Yes, Tori Amos wrote this when she was like a single celled egg. I think the song is a little older than her. Ignorance pisses me off.

The Boomtown Rats – Banana Republic Lyrics 12 years ago
Comparing Ireland (Republic) to a banana republic like the Dominican Republic. Whoring up to the UK in some way to keep the peace while the war goes on in the North? Love the song. Hits you like a hammer but softly.

The Boomtown Rats – (I Never Loved) Eva Braun Lyrics 12 years ago
Another cheery song about Hitler. Eva Braun was necessary to him but not to Germany. Him trying to explain, "he wasn't a bad guy, just a part of history". Says he stayed away for the Gore and that what he built was necessary but Eva Braun was just his woman hidden aside. He never touched meat (sure a vegatarian) and was never shown to show affection to her on camera. Not a kiss or a hug. People speculated that he might have been a closet homosexual but he also chased other women on the side. Eva Braun, like many women, are just a part of the furniture to many men.

Kate Bush – Violin Lyrics 12 years ago
Ah, too simple! Violin is also a symbol of a woman. It's shape, it's string (shivers and quivers), it can play and be played. Yes, her vocal style is very much like the shreak of a violin screaming when it is played hard or harshly. Women can manipulate men much like the Devil and Nero was a mad fool that was played. The crying Italian clown on the top of the chimney. This song is manic and also fun. She is a violin herself.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia was only out a short time and I think Johnny and the Devil was incorporated but did not influence the major theme of the song.

Thomas Dolby – Urges Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it more about the ritual of finding a companion at a bar for a one night stand than the act itself. Trying to show self confidence, trying not to show fear (sweating), and letting instinct take over. It is not in the gutter as some might think. Breaking the ice, loosen her composure. She knows, he knows, she knows - eye contact and a shared thought. Drinking to build up a sort of dutch courage.

Kate Bush – Jig of Life Lyrics 12 years ago
Memories and aging is what I get from this one. After death memories might not be linear and jump back and forth in a jumble. Youth denying age but the old demanding it's place to because those memories are just as important; seeing children grow and such. One face not wanting to remember the latter.

Kate Bush – How to Be Invisible Lyrics 12 years ago
This is again about herself (and many famous people). She has always been shy and wanted to stay out of the public eye. To practice her art but still have a normal life (raise a family without being in the public eye).

She is telling us how she trys to do it. To hide in plain sight. Adopt behaviors that get normal people ignored (and most people would not want to be totally ignored).

She also alludes to some of her other songs giving her away. Can you imagine trying to hide in plain sight and one of your songs comes on the radio. Either you would shrink away or try to stop from smiling.

Maybe one of the Mitford sisters coming to the realization she is really courting (or dancing with) a monster.

Kate Bush – Sat in Your Lap Lyrics 12 years ago
Give me the title of a degree and I can fake it. Later I think as she accepts learning and later she seeks it out. There is something sort of occult about this song I can't lay my hands on. Crowley always claimed to seek out hidden knowledge and enough was never enough. He was also a poet. The drums and the stalacto beat of the song lyrics combined with Kate's vocals.

Kate Bush – Symphony in Blue Lyrics 12 years ago
Kate Bush has a terrible fear or flying and death. This song sounds like pondering on a personal religous experiance. The meaning of it all and what does it really mean? Music is the only thing that quells all of her fears in life.

Kate Bush – Under Ice Lyrics 12 years ago
They say the entire second half of the album is about death. Why so morbid Kate? Ah, I think her mother died before this album. The second half of the album was also meant to be a concept album like Pink Floyd often did around this time period. Story telling and a common theme.

Otherwise... Totally agree with Theresa_Gionoffrio's conclusion.

Robyn Hitchcock – Veins of The Queen Lyrics 12 years ago
The Queen of England's real life is a mystery hidden behind an image on a screen so no one really knows who she really is inside. Maybe not even Phillip or her sons. She is the embodiment of Empire and the past but we are only left to speculate what she really thinks. Is she a person or a living symbol?

Robyn Hitchcock – Madonna of the Wasps Lyrics 12 years ago
Robyn is sometimes very critical about assigning a specific meaning to his songs. He has said that he even hates to name songs because some are beyond a name - it is a sound not a physical name of a thing. "I'm going to call this song 'Fred". It isn't about Fred. It does not sound like Fred. It has nothing to do with Fred but I am forced to call this group of words something." I think his songs mean something to him and he wants the songs to mean something personal to each person that appreciates them. "This song is comfortable. Not so comfortable as to put you to sleep. It is more like a comfortable chair where you go to think."

Robyn Hitchcock – The Devil's Coachman Lyrics 12 years ago
Hah, philosophy, astrology, and looking for symbolism in his eggs! A typical nonsensical rhyme of Hitchcock. Both up beat and sad at the same time.

Robyn Hitchcock – Viva! Sea-Tac Lyrics 12 years ago
I am a fan of Hitchcock but have never heard this song or him referencing it in interviews. Sounds, from the lyrics, more of an observation or a like of the place than a dis of Seattle and Sea-Tac.

Robyn Hitchcock – Sometimes I Wish I Was a Pretty Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
"Wreck" might be a Brit slang for something (they come up some interesting twists on the language) but when I first heard it I thought "wreck" was rape. Masterbation? I wish I was a pretty girl, so I could 'rape' myself in the shower? Think about it. If you were longing for a pretty girl and all you had was yourself... Say no more!

Elvis Costello – Charm School Lyrics 12 years ago
A wealth man using a poor girl or is it the other way around. He has an education and no intention yet her only education, a charm school if you will, is used to snare a man. A subtle parasidic relationship. He wants her for sex or a one night stand and she wants someone for life to support her.
