The Decemberists – Carolina Low Lyrics 9 years ago
Iiiiiiiiii don't think that line is "Pan lays." This is a rough tune.

I think it's probably "Loathe was I to lose you."

Drive-By Truckers – The Fourth Night of My Drinking Lyrics 12 years ago
I absolutely love how the music goes with the rhythm of his binge. While he's drinking it's a steady driving pace, but during the recovery periods when he's down it's only half as fast. The first two nights it takes him 8 measures to recover and start it up again. On that third night is when he's lost, and it takes 12 measures of recovery. Plus the solo section which is back at the original tempo reflects that he has to drink that much more to get rolling again. After that, he's probably drowning. I don't think there's a happy ending here.

Drive-By Truckers – I'm Sorry Huston Lyrics 12 years ago
I truly hate to fall back on the "rock song is about drugs" thing, but this guy is pretty obviously looking for a fix and knocked on the wrong door and she doesn't have anything to sell him.

Drive-By Truckers – Heathens Lyrics 12 years ago
"She ain't revved til the rods are thrown and I walk away."

My personal favorite line Patterson has ever put down. Perfectly encapsulates the idea that you can't really know how much you can get until you can't get any more.

Neko Case – Prison Girls Lyrics 12 years ago
I have what may be a completely off-the-wall read on this song, but it's stuck with me since the first listen. I think the protagonist has either overdosed or is committing suicide, possibly both.

In the first verse, she's fading out, and not really caring too much about it since nobody is there to care.

Second verse, she's awakened by a sound and vision she can't really understand. The humming helicopters and fan remind me of the opening scene of Apocalypse Now with the ceiling fan fading into helicopter sounds before the scene cuts to war scenes.

Third verse, she stumbles out of bed to turn on the light, but can't quite make it to the switch and collapses onto the floor. Someone walks past in the hall and the shadows of their legs are cast long across the floor. The ultra-dark hall she sings of isn't the literal hall, but her fading almost to black.

Fourth verse, Her last chance is the "prison girls" who I think are hotel maids on work release. She tries one last time to get someone's attention, but fails.

Fifth verse, the maids don't hear her and she finishes dying. She laments that even the maids have made more of themselves than she has.

Last verse, she's dead, dead, dead. The maids that didn't hear her the night before and went to bed with their own thoughts will be thinking of her as they clean up the room.

I don't care if it's right, that's the beauty of art. This is what the song will always mean to me.

Clutch – The Elephant Riders Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the elephant riders comes from the myth that the King of Siam offered Abraham Lincoln some war elephants to assist the Union in the Civil War. This would make this song kind of an alternate-history version of the war that might have been.

Ben Folds – The Ascent Of Stan Lyrics 12 years ago
So it seems to me that this song is about the maturation of an idealistic young person into a successful businessman. Think Steve Jobs. The protagonist progresses from a standard hippy into "the man" and this song is his reflection on that transition. As an added bonus, Ben has included the transition from all acoustic for the first verse to the third verse that has all kinds of electronic embellishment. I think that is the best part of the son.
