They Might Be Giants – Lucky Ball & Chain Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't be the only one who thinks this, it's a song about a doll being outgrown
"she threw away her baby doll"
"she never called me baby-doll"
"just five feet tall" (average for a 14-16 year old girl, usually when old dolls are getting thrown out)
"when she'd sit and hold me in her arms"

now I don't know about you guys, but I can't see a 5ft tall woman holding anybody of normal height in their arms

but this is just me rattling on, keep believing it's about a divorce if you want

and before I hear "but he talks about drinking at a bar" it's TMBG, you should expect weird personification like that (see Birdhouse in your soul)

Bad Religion – Atheist Peace Lyrics 12 years ago
I find it infinitely amusing how you ramble about respecting others while calling people every curse in the book, you throw around the word bigot like a child with a word of the day calendar without showing us how we are bigots. I'm an Atheist, I haven't found sufficient evidence to believe in a god, I debate friends and fellow students because I like to have my ideas challenged, as well as seeing if they hold up to scrutiny. You say I'm a bigot because I don't accept religion? You say Gaffin is a bigot because he wrote a song about holy war? (you'll excuse me for going off topic here, but Hitler was in fact a roman catholic, however debating it serves no purpose because World War 2 had very little to do with Hitler's religion) Can you tell us how we are being bigoted? Us Atheist can get flustered, because we're human, and humans have emotions.

now for me to get into a bit of the personal stuff you mentioned
you go on about how because we're wasting time arguing on the internet we're all going to die pointless deaths due to nuclear war. I seriously hope you're kidding, for the very thought of anyone being so intellectually void, so vapid as to believe that some punks spending free time on something other than political discourse is going to bring about the end of society as we know it. You say that we'll never learn the answers of the universe, and you may be right, but so fucking what? does that mean we shouldn't try to learn more? we learn more and more about both ourselves and the universe every year. Do you think if you went back in time and told Sir Isaac Newton "hey, we'll never learn everything there is to know about the universe, you may as well stop with your work in physics and mathematics, who gives a shit about how gravity works? or how light exists in a spectrum? you're just going to die a pointless death by disease" that he would give up? spend his days lying around doing nothing because there was no point to experimentation? HELL NO, nobody would care. Scientists don't think about this stuff because they think they'll find out how magic works one day and magically fix all of life's problems.

(in a few words, shut the hell up, you pseudo-intellectual fuck, and yes, I'm pissed, I think it's called for when you have directly insulted me and my peers)

The Mountain Goats – Pink and Blue Lyrics 12 years ago
this is a song about a single father with no idea how to be a father, pink and blue are common colors to see babies wearing,

I love the parts with the crows and the tree, it symbolizes how society completely overlooks people in situations like the narrator. the tree is very healthy judging by the lyrics "strong and heavy branches, leaves all aglow" which just further contrasts with the narrator and his situation, feeding his baby mashed bananas, and using an old produce box for a cradle.

The Mountain Goats – The House That Dripped Blood Lyrics 12 years ago
chronologically the last song is Alpha Omega

if you look at alot of The Mountain Goats songs you'll see that houses are an extended metaphor for relationship in Darnielle's lyrics, (see: The Mess Inside, and Baboon, also somewhat Alpha Rat's nest)

this song is about a dying relationship, he's ripping through the house for photographs of a time when they were happy "the laughing photographs"

The Avett Brothers – It Goes On and On Lyrics 12 years ago
And love is but an ocean, unrealistic notion, but I cling to her devotion, and I let it pull me down to the floor.

is it wrong of me to say that this is one of the greatest lines ever sung?

The Mountain Goats – If You See Light Lyrics 12 years ago
it's definitely not about doctor frankenstein, but it IS about a man who did something horrible, this song is about the paranoia that guilt brings, he is ready and he is waiting for the village to attack him, he expects it even, he's constantly thinking about his sins, and he is waiting for the village to retaliate, even if nobody knows what he did, wich seems to be the case here "waiting all winter" implies that.

The Mountain Goats – Hebrews 11:40 Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't know why, but I get the feeling that this is about a man living in a post apocalyptic world, he was mutated/mutilated by the war, and people fear him because of it, he lives outside of a town, alone

perhaps the "treasure" he is speaking of is food and water, that would certainly be considered treasure to anyone in this situation, his will to be restored is a will to be accepted by society, so that he doesn't have to be alone anymore
