Smith Westerns – Varsity Lyrics 6 years ago
I think it's about a guy finally getting into the dating life for the first time, also a couple of the lyrics are wrong here. The actual first lyric is "Thought I was a loner, til I went out on my own" which implies that he really felt okay being by himself for some time. The girl doesn't literally tell him to slow down but rather her presence is what changes his outlook.

"Thought I always had to win, or I wasn't anything" This part is talking about how he never tried to find anything because failure at any stage would make him feel like he wasn't worth anything. And he follows up by saying it was just a point of view and didn't really mean anything.

"Born in December but there's nothing 'bout her cold"- Nice descriptive line about how she makes him feel
"Gave it something more than anger, in my heart to hold"- Admits that his lack of a love life made him bitter and now she's replacing that with something else

The chorus is pretty self explanatory, he's just stating that he felt extremely lonely when he was alone.

"Safety came in numbers, but all I needed was just one, You're a four-leaf clover, You're an only kind of one"- He's talking about how all of these other people are just going around fucking as many people as they can like it's a numbers game and implying that that's "safe" because there's no emotional attachment for that, but how he prefers the one that he has and how her uniqueness makes her worth it.

The bridge and chorus play again and the final line is actually "And are you hanging onto me?" like the song is his confession about his feeling the girl he's speaking of and he's asking her if she feels the same about him.

I don't know, maybe I'm projecting a bit with the interpretation but I am 100% sure about the changed lyrics in this one. Very clear if you listen to the song.

Miniature Tigers – Cannibal Queen Lyrics 7 years ago
@[heyjohnnyhaiii:20067] I was thinking the same thing. It sounds like he's saying how great this girl is but he's also calling her cannibal queen as if she's just going to eat him alive later. Half of the lyrics are basically the guy saying how he's like a dog to her, how he's accountable for anything that goes wrong, and how his life is nothing without her in a really self deprecating way like he doesn't even realize his girl is fucking him over.

Arctic Monkeys – No Buses Lyrics 7 years ago
Already been said but it's basically about how a guy truly cared about some girl who wouldn't give him the time of day and now apparently all of the girls are after him so she's changed her mind. The guy is conflicted now because why should he want to be with her now when she had no interest a short time before? but at the same time he feels like shit turning her down and making her feel the way he did before along with still harboring some feelings towards her. Beautiful song, I'm certain it's about the AM boys getting turned down by girls before they made it big and afterwards those same girls were all dying to get with them.

Television – Venus de Milo Lyrics 7 years ago
Amazingly written song. As many others have said, it's primarily about Tom's friendship with Richard Hell. It sets itself up as this recalling of memories about when they were young, hanging out in New York and how he felt in those days with each verse progressively getting more negative.

At first everything is "bright" and "Alive" then Tom talks about laughing with a friend and feeling "like" he's on a drug. The drug line ironically means that the song has nothing to do with drugs since he's basically saying that hanging out with his friend makes him feel like he's high. Then the final verse talks about how he no longer holds the illusions he had in the first two verses and he turns down his friend when he tells them he wants to impersonate cops. The implication is that he's just grown out of the immature behavior while his friend has not.

The chorus is brilliant to this song. It's basically Tom being asked if he is saddened that he no longer is friends with Richard Hell. To which he replies that it doesn't mean anything to him and claiming he fell right into the arms of Venus de Milo. Venus de Milo is a famous statue that has no arms... So essentially he is lying to these people because he wants everyone to think he's okay even though he's really not.

Really neat song about keeping losing a friendship and keeping a poker face even though you really feel like shit.

Miniature Tigers – The Wolf Lyrics 7 years ago
Great song, very clever lyrics. From my point of view it looks like this is a story about a sort of hot and cold relationship. Really interesting how the context of the verse changes the meaning of the chorus without changing the lyrics or tone of the song.

the first verse talks about the relationship from a sort of immature viewpoint referencing a child's rhyme and focusing on the sexual attraction alone. the following chorus is him proudly saying how everybody wants to take the girl home apparently because she's attractive and how he's the lucky guy who is taking her home.

The second verse is almost a complete reversal where the relationship is now very toxic. They apparently move to LA on a whim (like they threw a dart on a map and it landed near LA) but it doesn't solve anything. He talks about how all of their love is wasted and the Lothario reference implies that either she is cheating on him or he thinks she is cheating on him when she actually isn't.

Here the chorus changes and instead of him being proud to be with her he despises how other men are looking to take his girlfriend from him and is paranoid about the relationship.

The last verse isn't as clear but to me it looks like the main guy recognizes that his insecurity is only making things worse and he truly does love the girl and is willing to make compromises to make things better and possibly marrying her.

The final chorus being neither prideful nor paranoid but simply stating that everyone is going to be going after his girl like it's something that he is just going to have to deal with.

Interpol – PDA Lyrics 9 years ago
It's talking about a relationship that went really bad but there's also throwing bits of 1984 in there. One of the central parts of 1984 is that all PDA is prohibited and you get in real trouble if the government see you. I only realized this because I was reading the book at the same time I first started listening to Interpol and realized how the "dear" parts sound exactly like Julia whenever she speaks.

The "sleep tight" "200 couches" part is referencing the place where Julia and Winston would go to secretly have sex and where they are eventually caught. hence the background calling him a simpleton for thinking he could get away with it.

The final section where the music changes is an allusion to the very end of 1984. SPOILER Winston is tortured for a while, released, and forced into this state of bliss by the government where he accepts that he is in a perfect society even though he gives up literally everything he was trying to achieve in the book and Julia as well. "Something to say" Something to do" this is talking about when he was going around with Julia. "Nothing to say, nothing to do" now that he's been silenced there's nothing for him to do with Julia.

It's also the general tone of the song. Throughout it is this dark trance like state but you immediately recognize it as dark. In 1984 Winston knows the government is messed up but it's also part of his daily routine. The change at the end turns it into this tone that seems light but there's clearly some dark undertones and the background vocals whispering into his ear add something not right to the equation.

I may be completely misinterpreting it but this is what I heard at least. I figure Interpol is using the loose story of 1984 to comment on relationships gone wrong due to how other people see them as a couple rather than something inherently wrong with them when they are alone

Tennis – Deep In The Woods Lyrics 9 years ago
This song reminds me a lot of the show "Twin Peaks" I think it's basically about that feeling you get when you're alone and feel like someone is watching over your shoulder combined with the eerie/magical feeling you get when walking through the forest.

The Velvet Underground – Who Loves The Sun Lyrics 9 years ago
It is both an attack and an emulation. The Velvet Underground is basically writing a better version of a Beatles song with the exact opposite meaning to make fun of their lyrical simplicity and to show everyone that they could write that kind of hippy bullshit better than any of the hippy bands ever could
