Zero 7 – Destiny Lyrics 4 years ago
Dreamy sounding song, evoking the feelings of dreamily longing for the person you're apart from. I think it's about being away from home in a long distance relationship where you're in a sad lonely state alone in an empty hotel room, distracting yourself with porn but wishing they were they instead (although knowing they can't be).

All the while, you remind yourself eventually you'll be with them again; "I'm nearly with you" and that no matter the time or distance, knowing they're there and waiting is enough because you're 'each other's destiny'

Sufjan Stevens – Futile Devices Lyrics 6 years ago
To me it's quite clearly about someone whose relationship with Sufjan is undefined, possibly a friend or love interest. I'm leaning towards a friend dynamic due to the reference to sleeping on their couch (if it was a lover, they'd be sharing a bed - no?) and of course he adores this person but saying "I love you" is hard because that's not something that has previously been discussed or expressed, at least in a way other than platonic.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Despair Lyrics 7 years ago
I actually see this song as a comforting to someone who feels slighted by Karen; she's reassuring them they're important to her; "don't despair - you're there - from beginning to middle to end" as well as "my sun is your sun, your sun is our sun."
Basically, Karen is saying even if you aren't aware, you're always always always important to me and 'there' in my mind.

Tame Impala – Endors Toi Lyrics 7 years ago
This song has been my favourite ever since it first came out, so four years now. To me, it's just about letting go of the stress of 'real life', calming yourself down and just feeling totally peaceful and freed. It's reassuring; "go to sleep you'll be fine!" and "off I go, day is done ... where a new one's just begun" basically just say yeah life is a grind sometimes, but relax your mind ... free yourself, in whatever way that may be for you. A bad day ends, but a fresh day is coming. I also interpret that line kind of as somewhere in the world, whilst your day is ending, a new one is just beginning. There's such an optimism to this song.

Amy Winehouse – What Is It About Men? Lyrics 7 years ago
Love this one. Think its meaning is pretty clear; she grew up with a crappy father who I'm interpreting cheated on her mother or something equally shitty. She talks about her you'd think this would deter her from bad men, and bad relationship behaviour but her "Freudian fate" means she finds herself pursuing equally unhealthy and immoral relationships in the form of sleeping with a taken guy - this is her "destructive side" which has "grown a mile wide" and become a really dysfunctional routine form of behaviour for her - she can't stay away from the lure of the immorality of it all; "animal aggression is my downfall"

The Cure – Just Like Heaven Lyrics 7 years ago
Robert has been with Mary since they were 14, and still to this day regards her as the absolute love of his life; as weird, fascinating, mental, striking and has even said that if he didn't have her he would genuinely kill himself. So this really is just about how she is so precious to him - a genuine bit of heaven

Agree with @[ottermonster:14299] about the background vocal being "Moon shaped pool, is it cold?" but then later on, like about 1:42 it sounds like it changes to "Moon shaped pool, I won't go"

Bat for Lashes – Bat's Mouth Lyrics 7 years ago
Totally agree with others' interpretations: it's about meeting someone and the intensifying of desire for the person. First stanza, meets and likes them - is sure she wants him. Second, feelings have intensified - is so sure she wants him. Finally, she caves to the want and has him and even after having him she is still sure she wants him and is grateful that he wanted her too. In short, it's about sexual chemistry on both sides and it being a great thing.

Bat for Lashes – Daniel Lyrics 7 years ago
@[obstacle2:13833] "...you want to be leaning out the window of a car with the stars shining. And I felt like I wanted to encapsulate that feeling of abandon and love and sadness and melancholy, all at the same time" someone quoted Natasha Khan on saying that, and I just wanted to say Khan 100% creates that, perfectly. That's the exact feeling this evokes.

Bat for Lashes – Daniel Lyrics 7 years ago
This song, although I have never seen The Karate Kid or know about Daniel Larusso, really gets to me. Given the interpretation of this being about her crush on the fictional character and knowing that they're not real but feeling a connection nonetheless, it works on a personal level regarding finding someone whose soul captures you. It works even better when the person who initially captured you isn't and can't be who you've ideally created them to be in your mind - but you still regard them as a home because there's something there that you notice "When I first saw you, I knew that you had a flame in your heart" and at that point knowing they'll always hold significance to you "I found a home in your eyes; we'd never be apart". There was someone for a time in my young teens who fit this exact bill and their name was also Daniel so this song is such a weird and almost nostalgic experience for me. The sound is so dreamy and beautiful too.

TV on the Radio – Staring At The Sun Lyrics 7 years ago
And yeah of course this sexual experience is at the beach, in the shallows of the sea, at early evening time when the sun is low enough to reflect on the sea. It's impressive how much imagery just the sound of this song creates.

TV on the Radio – Staring At The Sun Lyrics 7 years ago
This song has always created this vision in my mind of this really magical sexual experience, where there's such a connection with the person and it's just total bliss, where the sun aligns perfectly in time with you both. And I feel like the subtle intensity of its sound is almost like build up to the climax, but it's a really beautiful simple thing.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Charlie Lyrics 7 years ago
Yeah guys this song, as Anthony has said, is not about any sort of drug relapse. I actually take it as a really positive song; "Charlie" being the association with a person or a feeling. To me it just evokes feelings of total carefree love and realising your own softness: "lay down, get kissed" and especially "intimate sight has come into light" - this person/this thing that's going on in his life has brought him such simple happiness ("Charlie's making me smile") and the lines "My heart, your skin, this love I'm in" / "You're right, I'm wrong, be free, belong" just reinforce this idea of giving in to the simple bliss of being genuinely happy and in love.

Beck – Girl Lyrics 7 years ago
Literally not a fucking clue what the majority of these lyrics mean. But this song is incredible, a long time favourite of mine and Beck is just magic.

The undertone of the song is definitely dark, and the only part I can really get a brief interpretation of is the

"And I know I'm gonna make her die
Take her where her soul belongs
And I know I'm gonna steal her eye
Nothing that I wouldn't try

My sun-eyed girl
My sun-eyed girl"

which fits what I and others have said about the dark connotations within the song, in that Beck sees a girl and considers her to be angelic and pure ("sun eyed girl" connotes to this) and that she's not really of this world in that sense (in the warped stance Beck is writing from in this song) and so defiling her in some sense/taking her life (not literally) would take her where she belongs. I love the line "nothing that I wouldn't try" - it's as if he's acknowledging his own dark outlook on things/disturbing thoughts.

Also, how fuckin beautiful is there sound in he background of the chorus - really reminds me of Africa/hot summer days?!

Best Coast – Bratty B Lyrics 7 years ago
This is the song I find most relatable from Best Coast. I really identify with Bethany in this, me being the brat and my on/off boyfriend being the one she's addressing.

It's pretty straightforward to understand, just about acknowledging you're a bratty, selfish little child who kinda deserves to be ignored by the other person but despite how you act, you literally love and depend on them so much even if just for little things like calling at the end of the day to talk about your crappy day.

I love how when she's saying "I promise you that I won't be a brat, if I promise you anything I promise you that" it even sounds childish, and the effect is actually quite endearing. And the ending of "I miss you, I miss you, I miss you" is so sweet.

Best Coast – Our Deal Lyrics 7 years ago
I've always considered this song to be about a friends-with-benefits or undefined relationship with someone mainly physical/sex based and that it's kind of accepted on both sides that it's not to really be defined or spoken about. Their deal is that they hook up basically - their deal is not one that's romantic. Bethany in this is basically saying she has feelings and wants to know if the other person does too, but knows she can't really ask and that they won't say it off their own accord because their set up just isn't like that.

submissions
Best Coast – No One Like You Lyrics 7 years ago
"Know that you don't mean to say things
That hurt me and drop me to my knees"

The adoration for the person is really evident in these lyrics, in how Bethany defends their behaviour, in denial of the nasty things they say because she still wants "to be your girl, 'cause there's no one like you"

Best Coast – No One Like You Lyrics 7 years ago
It has to be about being desperate for someone's attention whom you adore because there's no one who can compare, regardless of whether or not the person treats you well or requites your feelings.

Cage the Elephant – Halo Lyrics 8 years ago
My interpretation of this song is that there's a person who you have a history with and who is definitely not a good idea - either the circumstances within you get with them are bad, or they mess you around, but you keep going back for more and can't keep away from them. And every time you go back to them you're essentially losing your innocence because being with them is wrong (as I said, either morally or even just for your emotional wellbeing) and the losing the halo part I take as hooking up with the person ("knew I couldn't help myself")

Lana Del Rey – Smarty Lyrics 8 years ago
This was always one of my favourite unreleased Lana songs. I feel like her whole theme from the whole Born to Die and pre-Born to Die era is really present in this song; the dark romantic connotations, and this idea of a man in your life who you regard as the absolute pinnacle of perfection and who you can't get over - just total adoration, basically. And letting yourself be used in any sense by them because no one could ever compare to them.

Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better Lyrics 8 years ago
I remember hearing this song years ago and immediately thinking it's about meeting someone new at an inconvenient time; eg coming out of a bad breakup, hurting over something, but still being intrigued about a person and so telling them they'll be in touch when they feel better. I think this makes the most sense rather than him talking to his friends he's overlooking, based on how he says "give me your number" which implies he's meeting a new person.

Phoenix – Chloroform Lyrics 8 years ago
These lyrics are pretty rough in my opinion haha. Really good lyrics, but harsh! As others have said, I take this as directed towards a specific person who he's involved with whose affection he actually finds pretty annoying. He's being a bit of a dick and acknowledging this; "I don't always tell the truth", "I don't only think of you", "my love is cruel", "why would I long for you?" etc.
He's basically saying; I wish you didn't miss me and care about me so much, because I know that I have eyes for other people sometimes. However, it's not too big a deal for him because he isn't leaving this person. He's essentially just settling to be with a person and carry on feeling how he does, and just admit that his love is cruel in the process.

Phoenix – Bankrupt! Lyrics 8 years ago
Yeah I agree with Tassadank that the theme of this song is observing the narcissistic ~millennial~ generation, which I think is a theme on this album hence it also being called Bankrupt! and having a song called Bourgeois which talks about this bougie generation as well as the middle class. I think with this song in particular, Thomas Mars is passing a negative judgement on the narcissism of people; shallow and selfie-taking et cetera et cetera, and I feel that even the title "Bankrupt!" is a bit of a piss take and a nod to his disapproval of bougie people who WANT to be considered "fashion" and "rich and young" etc.

And I agree that the ending really stays with you; kinda haunting and hopeless/lonely sounding.

Tame Impala – Past Life Lyrics 8 years ago
The correct lyrics as far as I can tell:

I was picking up a suit from the dry cleaners
Which was standard for me
Thursday, 12:30, I gotta pretty solid routine these days
I don't know it just works for me
Anyway, I was leaving I was getting in my car
And I went to adjust the rearview mirror, but in its reflection
Just for a second, I saw a figure, started to trigger
Memories of what I had learned, stopped me in my tracks
Who was that? it was my lover, my lover, from a past life

From a past life (feel like I saw a ghost)
From a past life (not what I expected)
From a past life (it's transfixed)
From a past life

Well somewhere between a lover and a friend
It was different back then, surreal
Poetic so I'd say, like a bizarre chick flick with a confusing end
But I shot it down, closed it off
The sounds and smells I made myself forget
A cheap solution to block out a friend, but it was real
It just feels like a past life

From a past life (crazy)
From a past life (it takes a lot to trip me out)
(I always wondered if you wanted my love)
For the first time
In a long time
(I always wondered if you wanted my love)

So I go about my day as normal
But I can't seem to pass it off as just a random event
It consumes me, I thought I was moving on
But I guess I was just switching off
And now I see my life as the banal slog it suddenly became
And I don't know if I can go on the same
But I don't wanna dig up old bones
I mean, I don't even know if she has the same phone number
Who knows? Maybe she does

From a past life
(I guess there's no harm in trying)
From a past life
(What's the worst that could happen?)
(I always wondered if you wanted my love)
For the first time
In a long time
(I tried to say it but it never came out right)
From a past life
From a past life
(You're not a stranger if you're always on my mind)
For the first time
(I know it's late, it just didn't feel right)
In a long time

Hello?

Tame Impala – Past Life Lyrics 8 years ago
Also just picked out the muffled lyric in the last 10 seconds of Kevin saying about this person; "you're not a stranger when you're always on my mind" - I think this song is really just about thinking you're over someone and being in denial of your feelings for them, and then having to face a sudden realisation that you're definitely not over them

I never really paid attention to this song until now, and I'd put it in my favourites from the album. I love the sound of it, and agree with the below that it's just about going about your day as normal and on the off-chance seeing some past lover/from a past life and it totally shaking you so much so that you can't stop thinking about it all day and can't stop yourself from pursuing it. I love how we hear him debating whether or not to call her "I mean, I don't even know if she has the same number. Who knows, maybe she does?" and the song ending with the girl's reply; "hello?" is the perfect ending to this past life coming back into communication, into the current

Bon Iver – Flume Lyrics 8 years ago
I theme that I find in this song is that of a bond with a mother. I am an only child/ mother's only one and it really is enough. When he says "it's enough" I truly think that he's sincere in saying that. I don't think he's saying that to be like "it's better than nothing"; I think he really means he is content with it being him and his mother - something I really relate to. To me this song is not romantic, and it is not just about himself, I really do strongly get the feeling of family and mother's love in this.
The line "sky is womb and she's the moon" connotes obviously to the childbirth and the mother, but in saying the sky is the womb but she's the moon (which I take as the "she" being mother), it's almost saying she is more than the sky and therefore more than the womb; she is life.
It reminds me a lot of the Robert Browning quote: "Motherhood: All love begins and ends there."

Sampha – Without Lyrics 8 years ago
Sampha's voice is one of the most beautiful I've heard...it's so gentle and raw sounding, and the Dual EP is so dreamy.
I just love how he ends the song by saying "just say; that we don't have to go without" then follows up with "I'll say it, say it, say it, say it oh I'll say it" as if he's saying "even if you don't believe we can be together, I do" and as the music fades out it sounds sad but hopeful

Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics 8 years ago
It has taken me sooo long to decide the meaning of this song, and I recently came to the conclusion that when he says "you're all I need" he is being literal.
I see this as Thom's cry to his partner to notice him. All the lines describe how needy he feels, and how overlooked he feels.
"I'm a next step, waiting in the wings"
"I'm an animal, trapped in your hot car"
"I am a moth, who just wants to share your light"
"I'm just an insect, trying to get out of the night" etc.

To him, this person is all he wants. He adores this person, and this person is there but overlooks him. He's background noise for her. I always found the line "I always stick to you because there are no others" ambiguous and wasn't sure if he was saying that as if to imply he's only with her because he'll settle for what he can get, but now I'm sure it's the opposite: He will stick by only her (despite how she may act) because in his mind, there are no others. She is all he wants/all he needs.

My favourite line which I think embodies this desperation for her feelings to be equally requited is; "I'm in the middle of your pictures, lying in the leaves"
because the beginning half of that sentence shows him telling her, basically, "I'm right here - in the middle, notice me" then follows it up to show that something is always hiding him, coming before him ("lying in the leaves")

Pulp – Common People Lyrics 8 years ago
Don't know why it's taken so long for me to comment on this song, but yeah as others have said I'm pretty sure this is based on a literal girl from Greece who he met whilst they were both at Central Saint Martins; she studying sculpture and from wealthy parents.
I think the story is quite an easy one, it's literally about the Different Class, as the album title would suggest. Although this girl's inquisitiveness towards the British working class lifestyle is kind of endearing and harmless, she will never understand it, or be it. And while she thinks she wants it, she couldn't possibly really want it - she just likes the idea of it. Both of them also fit the classic arty school type characters; rich girl wants to be this free, artistic spirit who doesn't need money and then there's the working class hero; Jarvis, and the mingling with the upper class. A story of different classes and the meeting of them.

And I guess the story is that although her inquisitiveness towards British working class is endearing and harmless, she'll never know it because she is, essentially, a Different Class.

Howler – Told You Once Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this is just about being selfish, and wishing you could be more nice, caring and genuine but not being able to. It's self-conflifction; "I wish there was something I could do, I hate myself more than I hate you"
and there being a level of care, but not enough for them to sacrifice their own selfishness for "I can't be real, and I can't be nice; there is nothing in this world I would sacrifice"

Neon Indian – Polish Girl Lyrics 8 years ago
To me this song is just about a girl the singer has always liked and had a thing for, but not found a way to talk to her about it; "It's been at least another year and still I haven't got the chance to say" even though he thinks about it a lot (writing songs about it "never said but nearly sung about a million ways")
I believe that he and this girl once had a thing, like over a year ago because of the way he says at least another year has passed and he's still not over it, and the way he says "but you fail to remember" and "do I ever cross your mind?" implies their history which he worries she doesn't think about like he does.
The second verse implies they have mutual friends and occasionally cross paths, and mutual friends sometimes post pictures of her reminding him of her yet again, and when and if they occasionally are at a place where each other like a party or whatever, they exchange distant looks; "distant looks but looking good, and not the other way" which suggests she gives him some sort of knowing look, teasing him well aware of her effect (not looking the other way)
And as for the title, I guess that's quite simple; the girl is Polish.

I cry every time at this song! It's about missing your late grandparent who passed when you were a child, and reminiscing about those precious memories you shared with them. I'm extremely close to my grandparents and the line about every question, them taking the time to look up the answer in the encyclopedia is really relatable and totally heartwarming. As you get older you learn more about them and how interesting they were, and you wish more than anything just to talk to them because of how amazing they were. Beautiful.

I've always got the idea of this 'team' from this song, though. Like Stephen Malkumus and this girl against the world, although maybe that's based on my own connotations I get from this song from me and my boyfriend. But these lines;

Because I never want to make you feel
That you're social
Never ignorant soul
Believe in what you want to do

make me think of him telling this girl that he doesn't think of her as just being another generic person, one of many; that she's not ignorant and has her own mind, and he encourages her to always do what she wants to do.

Tame Impala – Eventually Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm taking this as a literal breakup song, but as one that's not overly sad from the eyes of Kevin. It comes across more as a feeling of guilt rather than heartbreak, like they put the person through tons of shit and when it feels like "murder" to put their "heart through this" it's because they know they've already put them through enough, rather than it feeling like murder because it's heartbreaking. And the way he says "I know that I'll be happier" then follows it up with "...and I know you will, too!" it comes across to me as Kevin being less invested than the other person which is also substantiated by the evidence in this song he's mistreated them quite a bit/made them unhappy, and the adding of "eventually" after saying they'll be happy too seems as if to say; I'm going to be a lot happier single, and you will too but it may take longer than me. I'm sure Kevin cares a lot about this person, there's no questioning that, but I wouldn't say it's a sad breakup song, at least not for him. It's almost like a relief "I know just what I've got to do, and it's got to be soon"
