I don't know what this song is about, but the melody inspires memories of a much younger , simpler life with unfortunately a different cast of people no longer in my life, whether deceased, went their own way, went my own way or out of your life for whatever other reason. I think our so called protagonist in this song is not so innocent as he claims. It is a ruse. He is trying to play somewhat of a victim card. His insistence that he is going to marry the guys daughter anyway is a somewhat subtle threat of the girls father. He is trying to be diplomatic as he can . If all else fails and the dad still behave in a " Rude" manner to this not so innocent young man, the young man is going to behave very violent to his GF's dad. It could get very ugly. |

I think this song is about a man that is set to commit suicide. In fact he mentions it in his song. He is fed up with the world and of course is going to get drunk and party on his last night. I would say the person in the song is someone that is very educated being that he does read the newspaper.. The way many did back in the 70's. Thinking too much and taking the problems of the world too hard, he clearly has had enough. Notice no mention of any women. The guy just gave up on life and people in general and is content to have his double for this last night on earth. |

This song is government hypocrisy, irony if you will. Sure it goes on about the art of murder and the different ways to kill people . The average listener is lulled into the fact that this is an anti song about sociopaths and the shock builds as one continues to listen to the lyrics. Then like sweeping the rug from under the listener, Sting gets into how government, non chalantly kills people and the average person just accepts it for collateral damage or whatever, I know not all people do.. I digress. Sting is clearly making a political statement here and suddenly that mass murderer or serial killer that may have killed 1 person, 10 people or even 30 people is a mere bag of chips compared to top level politicians that kill thousands, if not millions in some cases, if you go back to Mussolini or Stalin or Hitler. |

She does not see that she is clearly being used and that this "naive" man of great knowledge is actually someone more sinister. By the last verse, the tables are clearly turned. It is 50 years old and on the heals of Presley and Sinatra and even Leslie Gore. I wonder if the media attacked this song back in the day, because it truly was controversial . With all due respect , you are all wrong. I can relate to this song. He is admitting that he is guilty too of playing the head games and he finally comes out with his feelings. I have had situations where , I had certain history with a woman and in a nightclub or party or wherever, we both just ignore each other , like neither one exists. This is what Lou Gramm is reffering. It is the whole process that goes with these "head games', including the awkwardness of an unexpected meeting.
