Twenty One Pilots – Holding on to You Lyrics 11 years ago
I know quite a few people who go to church with these guys and most of their songs have Christian subtext; this one is about coming to Christ and dying to one's self ("You should take my life, You should take my soul") and holding onto Him through that transition ("Holding on to you..." and "Entertain my faith").

Manchester Orchestra – Shake It Out Lyrics 11 years ago
To me it seems like he's become "addicted" in a sense to some sort of experience involving religious ecstasy where he encounters God and feels that God is shaking out his sinfulness or fear or doubt? And he keeps begging for that more and more in order to maintain his faith and possibly just to function.

The line "I felt the Lord begin to peel off all my skin, and the weight within reveal the bigger mess that you can't fix" is referring to two different things: "the Lord" and "you". I don't think he's saying that the Lord can't fix it, otherwise it would say "...reveal the bigger mess that HE can't fix" as he would still be referring to the Lord. Instead, he's speaking to someone else, "you", which is either another person or himself (like when you say, "That's not something you can help" as a holistic, general statement about everyone) and saying that there's a huge mess inside of him (his innately sinful nature?) that he cannot possibly fix, meaning he will continually need God to shake it out.

So, in short, I think it's about his desperate need and "addiction' to God renewing him or cleansing him through "shaking it out" of him.

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Barely Breathe Lyrics 11 years ago
Going off the idea that it's about the apocalypse foretold in Revelations, does anything think it's describing modern people who are clinging to their disbelief? I feel like the lines "Someone's got the answers, but I'd rather think there's nothing to be found" (as in, there is a God who has the answers, but I'm choosing to ignore that possibility) and "Because if seeing is believing, then believe that we have lost our eyes," (sort of challenging the atheistic reasoning against there being a god because He isn't seen)? And then "flying solo" could refer to living without belief. And of course because this is all happening during the apocalypse there's a lot more imminent pressure to believe, maybe asking if they knew they were dying would they believe?

Iron & Wine – Woman King Lyrics 11 years ago
Does anyone think of Athalia, the woman-king in 2 Kings? She was a worshipper of Baal and either the daughter, step-daughter, or step-sister of Jezebel (daughter or sister of Ahab) and, unlike Jezebel and any other female during this time, there was a period in which Athaliah herself was the "king" of Judah (with "queen" referring to a submissiveness towards the king).

It doesn't necessarily fit all the modern references in the song (clothesline, lemonade, cigarette ash, etc.) but the line "Someday we may see a Woman-King, sword in hand, swing at some evil and bleed" definitely makes me think of Athaliah's particularly vicious, bloody reign in which she slaughtered all but one of the royal family ("sword in hand"), ultimately being executed quite violently herself ("and bleed").

Cobra Starship – Fold Your Hands, Child Lyrics 13 years ago
Honestly, I'm pretty convinced that this song has to do with at least one of the people being in the closet.

"'Cause we do what we gotta do
We never even care about truth
(It's the truth, it's the truth)
Yeah, we do what we gotta do
We're only gonna care about us"
The speaker is accepting of this and knows, but is indifferent to what people may think and thinks that his friend should be too.

"And walk straight now"
Walk STRAIGHT. Pretened to be straight.

Beyond that, all of the constant mentions of "hiding", "secret", and the overall fear of people finding out the truth screams of closeted homosexuality. It almost sounds as if Gabe is a protective friend and not in a relationship with the other guy, but that's up in the air.
