Boy oh boy do I know what he means. Obviously a song about losing the love of his life and his inability to recover and move on. This song was my anthem for a long time. |

To build on opeth's answer, I think it's also a discussion of the innocence of children. How the horrors of life, in general, don't disturb their peace. "Once long ago, I was young, and I saw the world through innocent eyes... All that I can see is our despair." That line seems to mean that all kids are untainted with the harsh reality life can bring, but they all learn it eventually. "You haven't learned anything... but you will." Great song. I had no idea about Nick's daughter either. |
