I read somewhere that Jennifer Nettles wrote this song after she had a miscarriage and that listening to it helps her deal with what happened and makes her feel stronger. I think this is accurate but I agree, it's about feeling lost and knowing that sometimes you just have to "lose until you win" |

Somehow I think that this is a song that can refer to anyone that you've lost. It doesn't necessarily have to be a lover, although it could be, I think it could be about a family member or a friend or whatever. Whoever it's about, it is a very touching song that definitely tugs at the heartstrings. It shows that even though the person concerned is gone, they will never be forgotten and they will always be remembered due to the impact they had upon the singer. She's saying that she will always keep a part of them with her and no matter what happens, the fect they're gone doesn't mean their memories or strength will fade. Hill's vocals are outstanding throughout and her tone really compliments the overall emotional value of the song. Simply amazing. |

Just because it's slow doesn't make it boring! I must disagree with you and say that it is one of her best songs. It captures the magic of the memories they shared in the past and it also potrays her grief. The lyrics are beautiful and Hill sings it outstandingly well. I know you posted this in 2004, but if you happen to read this, have another listen to this song. Maybe it will mean something to you now. |

First to comment? I think this song can apply to anyone out there who has ever suffered doubts about themself. Its basic message is accept yourself and let others either accept you for who you are or if they don't, forget them. There are some great lines in this song, such as: "I'm dealing with the changes this complicated strangeness," it just reflects how life twists and turns and you have to deal with it. "all my impurities are right here on my sleeve," highlights how we should show our faults and failures because no-one is perfect. The tone of her voice and the way she handles the lyrics is outstanding and it never fails to make me appreciate her music and the content of this inspiring song.

And line 12 should be:
Or do you wish it was me?

This song is very sad and has a melancholy tone to it without a doubt. She has regrets. She did not say goodbye to this person in the perfect way she wished she had and this song is focusing on her feelings a couple of years after the death. Even after all this time she is still feling the raw apin of loss. Somehow I get the feeling that she is singing to a lost friend. When she says, "Well I guess it takes a while for someone to really disappear," I think that whatever she's doing she can still see this person and feel their presence, due to the strong relationship/connection they shared. The verse, "And I remember where I was when the word came about you, it was a day much like today, the sky was bright and wide and blue," Just goes to show that death can hit us at any time even when the world is beautiful. When she sings, "Won't see you anymore, I guess it's finally sinking in," shows that she is reluctantly accepting the inescapable fact that she will never see her friend again, she's gone for good. She wants to know, "if there was some better way to say goodbye," To this person. She longs to have that chance to say a proper, heartfelt goodbye and be aware of the fact she'll never see her again. I don't think a funeral was enough for her. |

This song is very sad and touching. It allows the listener to see that there is always someone out there that will miss you when you die. It's a Mother singing to God about her daughter who is close to death. She is basically arguing her case. She's saying why God should not take her child away: she's too young, who'll look after her, he has taken enough, he has suffered the loss of a child too, she's the Mother's angel. It's very tender throughout and the bulid up to the final verses works well against the kind of acceptance that comes with the last few lines. All in all a wonderful song that touches anyone who listens. |

Can't believe there are no comments for this! Oh well, I'll be the first. Virginia Bluebell is a song that I believe no-one can listen to without being touched and inspired. She is trying to tell her friend, who has been hurt/torn apart/lost/afraid/depressed/and has suffered from a lack of belief in herself, "to look up and let the world see all the beauty that you're made of." It's a sad song, but also an uplifting one. She is trying to show that no matter what has happened, is happening or will happen, she will always be there and the person she's singing to will always be her Virginia Bluebell. Her vocals are absolutely stunning and the first time I heard it I had tears in my eyes. The lines, "Put a little light in the darkest places. Put a little smile on the saddest faces" Show that this girl/woman clearly has a beautiful personality and presence and that she just has to find the strength to show it again. |

Most comments about this song focus upon a break up and being about a boyfriend. I disgree and say that it is definitely about a close friend. Somehow its meaning chnages for me from listen to listen. Sometimes I think its about parting from a best friend and sometimes I think its about a best friend dying. It really touches me every time I hear it and her vocals are astonishing in it. My personal favourite line is "Music starts playin' like the end of a sad movie it's the kind of ending you don't really wanna see." Its a line that particularly gets me. |

This song points out the fact that anyone can suffer abuse. This gal seems like a normal woman and she is being put through hell. He controls her life and can threaten her and beat her and psychologically torture her as and when he pleases. The most chilling part of this song is when the cop shows up and he gets away with it. That part makes me want to scream. The threat of death is on her shoulders and though she's planning to escape, I can't see it working out for her. Such a sad, yet enlightening song. |

A song to convey life's message - Sometimes it happens. What an awesome song to pick you up on a bad day and show that everyone has those days. It's really funny and gets the message across that life ain't always a barrel of laughs but you just gotta pick yourself, dust yourself off and move on whilst learning and laughing at your mistakes and failures. |

Absolutely love this beautiful song. You can almost see yourself in twenty years time saying the exact same thing to the new owner of your old house. It has a nostalgic tone to it that really touches my heart every time I hear it. I can listen and listen to it and never get tired of it's powerful and emotional words. Did she find what she was searching for? Closure? Fulfillment? I don't know... But I certainly hope she did. |
