The alienation of city life.

Gang of Four – Contract Lyrics 10 years ago
There is something here about the public/private distinction and the way in which it is used to maintain the political status quo. I think the song is arguing against the concept of the establishment of a social contract that operates in terms of mutual interest, and pointing out the way in which capitalism commodifies desire, and intrudes into our most personal and intimate moments, whilst at the same time placing "the personal" (marriage, religion, the family, etc.) beyond of political criticism. Paradoxically, one answer to this problem is to accept what bothers us, and embrace our embodiment on its own terms...

The Mountain Goats – Psalms 40:2 Lyrics 13 years ago
Minor typos;

"With all the sharp small shards of shrapnel
that seem to burst out of me and you"

Gang of Four – Damaged Goods Lyrics 13 years ago
"You said you're cheap but you're too much"

I am just not convinced by this parsing, it sounds more like "too smart", but it is so hard to tell because there's another yobbo interjecting whilst the lead singer is doing his bit. Were there any lyric sheets published with the original LPs?

Anyway, this song is like an onion... layers upon layers of meaning.

Gang of Four – Armalite Rifle Lyrics 13 years ago
I think what Suburban kids says about the lyrics applies to the album version too.

The Armalite in the song is almost certainly the AR-18 which was chambered for the 5.56mm round, the design of this round is that it undergoes 'yaw' (i.e. tumbling) and fragmentation after impact. Even it 'just' gets you in the arm the bullet has the potential to scramble your insides as it is likely to perforate the limb and carry on yawing/fragmenting through the torso. Damage.

Cat Power – Names Lyrics 13 years ago
Painful stuff. Although I don't know where, or who, they are, the children's stories ring true.

I used to think that this song ran the risk of becoming bathetic by the time we get to 'Charles'.

As for 'Charles, he was about fourteen; but that could just as well be forty I suppose. And once you start smoking crack to chemically ablate a broken heart, then I guess anything could happen...

An excellent song on an excellent album. Could the person who took it from the Armidale library please return it?

Camera Obscura – Suspended from Class Lyrics 13 years ago
It's also a nice pun. Generally speaking it is OK for someone (even your teacher!) to touch you on the elbow (I believe that this is only considered to have an erotic subtext in certain Science Fiction novels), but touching someone on the the arse is something else. If a person doesn't know the difference then there's bound to be some trouble.
