| The song is about looking over your life and hoping you were a good person. The line about the screen showing the moments in this person's life seems to me like he's saying his life is flashing before his eyes right before death. It then goes on to "show" these moments by repeating lyrics from previous songs on the albums. All these lyrics are important decisions that the writer made or are important qualities that the writer has. Basically the last line says it all. This song is a lot deeper than a lot of you seem to think. It's starting out with the story of a man who has done something bad...its unclear but the first line "Jesus Christ that's a pretty face" suggests that it has to do with lust. He begins talking to Jesus, but not in a religous way, in more of a hopeless way. This hopelessness, fear of death, and dying alone, and feeling like a terrible person escalates into the realization that all people are evil at heart. "I swear I'd try to nail you back up"..."We've all got wood and nails.." It covers so much, it's hard to write a paragraph that does this song justice. I feel like it deserves a book. It's the best song I've ever heard. |

Somebody suggested to me that this was about Warren leaving the band...the song becomes so much better when you think of it like that. "We used to like all the same bands" - Warren and Tom used to have the same musical taste, Tom's is changing. "What do we have left in common, just shared memories of good times long since passed" - They had a lot of good times in the band's early days, but it just isn't the same anymore "You can't get what you want from me" - A hardcore punk group "And I can't get what I need from you" cooperation with the direction the band is heading in. "I'm not giving up on us" - Warren is leaving the band, but Tom is still going ahead with his music. |
