This song is about a child, an adolescent losing their innocence and coming to grips with adult life generally and, more specifically, with biological, instinct-driven sex drive. Making Flippy Floppy means the physical act of sexual intercourse. "Snap into position, Bounce 'til you ache." Blocking out the horror of trying to acclimate to adult human living by requiting/indulging in a basic instinctual/animal urge: "Making flippy floppy, Trying to do my best, Lock the door, We kill the beast, kill it!" To me the Speaking in Tongues album is a series of songs about coming to grips with insanity, life, of simultaneously possessing human emotions and animal instincts, and finally making some internal peace with who you are and your relation to the world. The opener, Burning Down the House, is an intro. The House is your head, your personal being; The Burning is possible insanity, a being not 'not quite right,' even while otherwise seeming like you're everybody else. "I'm an ordinary guy. Burning down the house." The song suggests you're about to journey through some troubles -- the album is the "ticket": Hold tight wait till the party's over. Hold tight we're in for nasty weather. There has got to be a way. Burning down the house. Here's your ticket pack your bag:time for jumpin' overboard. The transportation is here. Close enough but not too far, maybe you know where you are. Fightin' fire with fire And off you go ... confronting animal instinct sex drive (Making Flippy Floppy), reconciling that with human love (Girlfriend is Better), looking at religion/mythology/charlatans that claim to have the answers (Slippery People), embracing and joyfully wallowing in your insanity (I Get Wild/Wild Gravity), then dealing with the darker side of that embrace (Swamp), finally emerging with some synthesis/acceptance of who you are (Pull Up the Roots), and finally reaching a cathartic internal peace (This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)). |
