The New Pornographers – Adventures in Solitude Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about a guy coming out of a coma. This would make sense with the "We thought we lost you... Welcome back" part. The narrator is not the guy in the come, he is singing about someone in a hospital that is in a coma and near death, and then miraculously snaps out of it.

Mumford & Sons – Timshel Lyrics 13 years ago
The only thing I can think of, prenozz, is that the cold water is being patted on her head with a towel over the stress of having to make such a decision. He says it freezes her cold mind so it seems like it's a cold towel on her forehead.

The last verse about " I will tell the night" etc. is just the narrator saying he'll do anything in his power to help her but it is ultimately her decision. "Tell the night, Lose your sight" might mean that the narrator is praying to have God look the other way, so to speak.

I was the same as you on this song, at first I thought that there was no way this could be about abortion but after reading the lyrics and listening to the song many times it seems thats what it has to be about.

When it hit me that the "you are not alone in this" line could be about her unborn child I was sold.

The Who – Baba O'Riley Lyrics 13 years ago
It's actually "I farm for my meals" not plowed or fight. Fight doesn't make sense because a couple verses down he says he doesn't need to fight. It does sound like fight, but if you listen closely it's farm. This also maakes sense with Pete's LIFEHOUSE project he was working on.

For the longest time I actually thought it was "fight".

I always thought When mick said he "did his very best to write" that he meant writing songs, but I guess he could mean writing his friends in prison as well. I wonder if he meant to use the word write as a pun.

Mumford & Sons – Timshel Lyrics 13 years ago
But if you look at the choice of words,"the one to whom you gave life". If the baby was born they would have said "the one to whom you gave birth". An unborn child is still a living thing, especially in the Christian philosophy.

You can also look at the meaning of Timshel -- It means to choose, yes, but if you look at what that word means in the Steinbeck novel EAST OF EDEN, it's about Cain and Able and Cain having the choice to kill Able and because we have the choice it brings us to the level of a god. It's not something that's forced upon us. This is what "the ladder to the stars" reference means.

So because of the killing reference and how the words are VERY CAREFULLY chosen I do believe it's about an abortion and a woman deciding whether she wants to kill her unborn child or not.

The Kinks – Art Lover Lyrics 13 years ago
Here is the passage directly from Creem Magazine. This is Ray Davies talking;

Let's talk about "Art Lover". That song is ambiguous in the same way that "Lola" was. At first, it sounds like it might be about some sort of pervert, but I think there's a lot more going on there.

I had great trouble when I first ran through that song in the studio with the guys. I gave them a chord sheet, and they were really pissed off by this time because we'd already done something like 15 tracks. They said, "Oh fuck. He's not going to do another track!" And I said, "Just play the chords." I looked at their faces when we did the playback. First of all, they were just worried about what they were playing. The second playback, they listened to the words, and they looked like "What the fuck's he writing about?" I originally had put in a line that said something like "Sunday parents with their kids knowing they're just alone" which made it, obvious that it was about someone who was divorced and only had his kid on a Sunday. So I left it out because I wanted to leave the song ambiguous. I think ambiguity is a good tool, a good weapon I used it in songs like "Waterloo Sunset". And I think it just about works because it says "I'm not a flasher in a raincoat." One of the reasons they're not putting it out as a single in England is because the BBC has said there's a flasher in a raincoat, but it says "I'm not a flasher." So it does sound like a pervert to begin with, but I think it does work in the end and you realize what the song's about.

It's a good song. It's a sad song. And I'd love it to be a single. I wouldn't care if it bombed and died a death because I believe in that song so much

The line is "learn from your mother OR ELSE spend your days biting your own neck". This actually means the opposite of what you're saying AdventerousHeart. It means listen to your mother or you'll be sorry.

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 14 years ago
This is definitely a father talking to his son. Actually the son is in the room with both parents. You can tell this when the father says "I really fucked it up this time, didn't I my dear." This wouldn't be said to his son but to his wife.

The father is basically ashamed of himself because he didn't teach his son any life lessons and now his son is having problems because of this. The line "you know you've seen this all before" refers to the the son seeing his father screw up so that is what he learned. Like father like son.

That's also why he tells him to learn from his mother at the end. Because he has nothing he can teach him.

The father fucked up his son's life and is trying to explain this to his son.

The Kinks – Oklahoma U.S.A. Lyrics 14 years ago
Another of Ray's songs about the futility of life. This is similar to "She Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina" from ARTHUR. Basically the main character in the song lives in a fantasy world of musicals on TV. She doesn't have a particularly good or exciting life on her own so she lives through this perfect world of old MGM musicals and classic movies.

The line should be "built 'fore the industrial revolution." The 'fore meaning before. She lives in an old decrepit house. Her life is terrible so she needs an escape.

The Kinks – Victoria Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree GeneralAppo, but on this song and this song Ray is not sarcastic. This, being the first song on the album, is when Arthur was a naive young lad so he sees only the best about Queen Victoria and his country. He would do anything for England. As the album goes on things happen and later he is not so enamored with his home of England.

The culmination is Young and Innocent Days which explains how Arthur wants his view of the world and England to be as it was when he was younger, but it can not be because he learned about how the world works.

So Victoria is not a sarcastic song at all but a look at England from a young, naive point of view.

The Kinks – Young And Innocent Days Lyrics 14 years ago
I'd have to agree.

I first heard the song 30 years ago when I first started really getting into The Kinks. I was only 15, and I could feel the emotion of the song back then.

I read a little more into the song (and the whole Kinks' collection) now. For instance, Arthur's not just wishing for the old days but he wants his naiveté back. If you look to the first song on the album, "Victoria", Arthur loves England and would do anything for his country, and his Queen. He was a very innocent and believed in his country. Now go later on the album, to this song,"Young And Innocent Days". He is weary and knows that he was taken advantage of. He wants the feeling of that younger Arthur back but, as we all know, once that bell is rung you can't unring it. He's wiser, but not happier.

He says he wishes his eyes could see exactly as things used to be. This has a couple meanings. He wants to feel the way he did in his youth but he also wants England to be the England of his youth. Which may not have been what it actually was, but the way Arthur saw it at the time. His perspective was wrong because he was young and innocent.

The Kinks – Lola Lyrics 14 years ago
Of course Ray meant it. This is one of the greatest songwriters in the history of rock and roll. There is never any mention in the song that Lola is a man for sure.

It could have been from an actual experience but that doesn't mean the song wasn't written a certain way.

The Kinks – Lola Lyrics 14 years ago
It's not necessarily written about a transvestite. Ray writes the song to be deliberately ambiguous. We're never really told if Lola is a man or a woman with masculine qualities. Even the last line which most people think is the giveaway line. But if you look at it closely.

"I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola" -- Lola could be a man or he cold be glad the narrator is a man. In other words Lola is either glad or a man. Deliberately ambiguous. Ray intended it that way, so anyone that says they're sure one way or another of Lola's gender doesn't know what they're talking about.

If the narrator/writer of the song intended to have 2 meanings then you can't say it absolutely has to be one or the other.

This is the genius of Ray Davies.

Mumford & Sons – Timshel Lyrics 14 years ago
Since this very well could be about abortion, the "you are not alone in this" part doesn't necessarily have to be about the brothers. It just hit me that she's not alone in this because she has to decide if she wants to kill her living child. She has to decide whether or not she has to kill an innocent child so she is not the only one in on this decision.

With the obvious Christian background of the rest of the songs on the album I think this makes more sense. I also think the song becomes even more powerful.

Yeah, but "nicking" is a term used in England for stealing. So a nicking spree means they were robbing people. When he "hit" someone he didn't literally hit him but stole from the wrong guy.

The Kinks – Juke Box Music Lyrics 14 years ago
How can nobody comment on this song. It's one of the great late period Kink's songs. Similar in theme to "Rock and Roll Fantasy" on MISFITS. It's about a lady that really gets into music. She really disects the art and the message and the whole gestault of it.

Everyone tells her to just let it go, that it's mindless crap. Or they simply don't understand her fascination with music. It gets so bad that it has an affect on her relationship.

I think anybody that considers themselves a Kinks fan can relate to this. We just seem to like music a little more than the average person.

The Kinks – Young And Innocent Days Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you're wrong mycology. It definitely is about looking back but it's sung from Arthur's point of view. This is one of the later tracks on the album and Arthur is looking back and and wondering what it's all for (a repeated theme in Ray Davies' music). He wants to go back in time when things were much simpler. Who doesn't? We all want to go back when we have the whole future ahead of us and the world at our feet. A very nostalgic, sad song.

Arthur is much older and wiser now and wishes he could become that naive person with his dreams ahead of him. He eventually comes to terms with it and relishes the good old days of his youth.

The Everly Brothers – All I Have To Do Is Dream Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about masturbation. When he says he's dreaming his life away it means he is masturbating all the time. You have to remember this song came out in the 50's so the innuendos were more subtle. Anytime he is talking about dreaming he is talking about masturbating.

They just hid it in this sweet song so women can think of it in a more romantic way. Whomever wrote this song was a genius.

Today they would just be blatant and talk about masturbation. I think a song is better if the message is a little more hidden.

Read the lyrics again, look at every time he says dream or dreaming. This is when he is thinking about masturbating. You will see that the song isn't as sweet as most of you are making it out to be.

I've never been through a 12 step program so I didn't get the imagery. Thanks. I knew it was a conversation with himself to himself and also to God. I don't know what the 12 steps are so I didn't get the reference.

You could be right on.

What would the last part mean about leading him to the truth and following him the rest of his life? Is that verse to God as well?

Where did you hear this on the radio? I never hear anything like this on the radio. I would like to find a radio station that plays awesome stuff like this instead of the homogenized crap they usually play.

Punk actually started in the mid seventies in New York at CBGB's. Malcolm McClaren got the Idea for the Sex Pistols from Richard Hell when he saw their style.

It came out in England around 76 to 77 with the Sex Pistols and The Clash and like bands. When it came out in the UK it was much more political because of the climate their.

The Ramones predates Never Mind the Bullocks and the first Clash album. The New York Dolls predate the UK punk movement as well.

The Replacements – Skyway Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is a metaphor but it's a metaphor for the band's and Paul Westerberg's success. It's about staying true to yourself and not selling out to get what you want.

The girl he sees on the skyway represents the goal he is trying to achieve. When he tries to meet her by going on the skyway he misses her because she decided to take the street. If he would have been in the street he would have met up with her.

He changed his normal routine to meet this girl and it backfired.

What he is saying is that if you wait and be true to yourself success will happen.

The Replacements were on the verge of becoming a successful rock band at this point in their career and Paul was deciding if they should keep doing what they have been doing all along to become successful or should they change it up. At that point to change would be to sell out. Alas, The Replacements never got the recognition or success they deserved.

Bands like Soul Asylum and Goo Goo Dolls used their sound and style to become popular and make money.

This isn't about Captain America the comic book character at all. It's about how the USA helps out every other country through their crises and when we need help other countries do not reciprocate. Having said that I think it's funny how he has a song about Captain America and about Superman on the same album.

Bette Midler – From A Distance Lyrics 14 years ago
The song was NOT written by Bette Midler. It was written by Julie Gold and the best version is Nanci Griffith's. If you have not heard that version download it right now. Bette's version was too overproduced and very bombastic. Just too much stuff. It also ends with the God is watching us line repeated over and over which really isn't the point of the song.

Nanci's just has the God is watching us part at the bridge. Then it ends with "it's the song of everyman" Which musically makes a lot more sense. She also uses better quiet and loud dynamics and it builds much better to the end.

It is an awesome song but after hearing Nanci Griffith's version I can't listen to Bette's without rolling my eyes. Nanci's version is definitely the definitive one out there.
