Redgum – H.M.A.S. Australia Lyrics 11 years ago
Brilliant protest song. I love the thought that Redgum put into their lyrics. This was from their "If You Don't Fight You Lose" album (1978), during Malcolm Fraser's turn as PM of Australia.

To me, this song is a protest against American influence in Australia (And I've just begun to wonder/Where we're headed for/Band keeps playing American songs from 1973) and also about immigration policies (We never take on passengers/Though we seem to have lots of room).

However, I was not politically aware during this time so I could be wrong. Malcolm Fraser's Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Fraser) says "the Fraser government adopted a formal policy for "a humanitarian commitment to admit refugees for resettlement"..

Michael Sembello – Maniac Lyrics 13 years ago
Such a rockin' song, I can't keep my head from boppin' and my voice from croonin', wordlessly or not.

This is the first time I have ever read the lyrics, and I think this an amazing work of poetry too, gladly metaphysical: a woman becoming something so much more through rhythm and movement...

Macklemore – The End Lyrics 13 years ago
Has to be the most soulful, thoughtful and beautiful rap (?) songs I have heard, with something like sorrow bleeding throughout and a thoroughly mystifying ending. Read he description of this ep here:

And you get a great idea of what this artist is about.

This song is about a youth encountering the love of his life at a dance - but she represents much more than love: healing and redemption but at the last... a goodbye. All in one night? I injected my own vision for the ending: that a redemptive love story becomes an allegory for some kind of apocalypse. "Goodbye forever, never see you again"

Jane Child – Don't Wanna Fall In Love Lyrics 14 years ago
What a shock to re-discover this song on my iPod! It had been on my mind some months ago and all I remembered about it were the lyrics "I don't wanna fall in love... I'll fight you to the end" sung with *attitude*. :)

This was way back in 1990 when I was year 10! I looked up Jane Child just now and remembered how I was strangely attracted to her ear to nose chain as well, which seemed to inform and strengthen the sense of attitude about her.

When I listen to it now, I can almost conjure up the same boy-hood sense of danger I felt when listening to this song. How can you love someone but not want to love them? It still seems somewhat alien, and I may not ever understand it, but I like this song a lot.

Lionel Richie – Hello Lyrics 14 years ago
This is indeed one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and although I can appreciate the music video for being an innocent reflection of the story, I can't help but feel it's a naive reflection too. What we see is a teacher stalking his student.. and in the end she has made a bust of him in return - which seems like equal "stalkerish" behaviour to me. I guess they were made for each other. :)

Deep Purple – Soldier of Fortune Lyrics 14 years ago
An amazing song, heard for the first time today on my iPod as I work; I listen to random music just to drown out office sounds. At first listen I thought "nice tune" and was going to write it off until the last verse.. "Now I feel I'm growing older". It caught me and I have listened to it at least 10 times over just to feel the depth and loneliness.

At first I though like Scarfaze - he is hoping to get love in return from a particular woman. I think the lyrics are not specific enough to make the call either way, and either way it is still brilliant and so sad.
