Roger Waters – 5.01 AM (The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, Pt. 10) Lyrics 3 years ago
Here are the ACTUAL lyrics:
An angel on a Harley pulls across to greet a fellow rolling stone, puts his bike up on its stand leans back and then extends a scarred and greasy hand. He says "How ya doin' bro? Where ya been? Where ya goin'?" Then he takes your hand in some strange Californian handshake and breaks the bone: "Have a nice day"
A housewife from Encino whose husband's on the golf course with his book of rules breaks and makes a 'U' and idles back to take a second look at you. You flex your rod, fish takes the hook - Sweet vodka and tobacco in her breath - another number in your little black book
These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking
"Oh babe, I must be dreaming"
I was standing on the leading edge, the Eastern seaboard spread before my eyes. "Jump" said Yoko Ono. "I'm too scared and too good looking", I cried. "Go on," she says, "Why don't you give it a try? Why prolong the agony. All men must die"
Do you remember Dick Tracy? Do you remember Shane?
"And mother wants you"
Could you see him selling tickets where the buzzard circles over
"Shane" - The body on the plain
Did you understand the music, Yoko or was it all in vain? Shame!
The bitch said something mystical "Herro" So I stepped back on the curb again - wooh!
These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking
"Oh babe, I must be dreaming again"
These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking

Morrissey – Smiler With Knife Lyrics 3 years ago
I think the smiler is the singer's assailant. not the singer.
There's a key line which gets hidden in semantic games - it should be read as "(I) surrender will (noun): I am before you" (so no, it's not a pun on a certain ex-rapper-turned-broadcaster!)

Morrissey – Michael's Bones Lyrics 3 years ago
According to Christopher Hitchens, this is what the song is about: ""Morrissey's first experience with suicide was when he was 15. Michael Kelly, a schoolfriend at the time, took his own life after football lessons. Kelly is remembered in the song Michael's Bones."

Led Zeppelin – How Many More Times Lyrics 4 years ago
Analysing the song is pointless. It's a medley of second- or third-hand song fragments. The sum total only means as little or as much as any listener wants it to mean.
Contains direct allusions to:-
The Hunter (Albert King/Junior Wells) and Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (folksong with complex history, properly learned from Lead Belly)
Contains passing allusions to:-
Travelling Riverside Blues [Robert Johnson], How Many More Years [Howlin Wolf], (maybe) Good Morning Little Schoolgirl [Sonny Boy Williamson 1], (maybe) Steal Away [Jimmy Hughes]

Elvis Costello – The Loved Ones Lyrics 4 years ago
Foreverdrone got half the meaning of the song. EC has said the main point of the song is that there's nothing romantic about living the rock and roll lifestyle and dying young, because the only legacy the person can be sure of leaving when dead is the misery of the bereaved relatives ("they're the ones who have to bury the bastard").

Brian Eno – Seven Deadly Finns Lyrics 4 years ago
The song is about sailors visiting a brothel - one whose employees are proud of their ability to cater to every imaginable fetish.
There may be some layering of vocals giving us two correct answers - but I never had any doubt that the first line is, as Eno himself transcribed it. "such a burning shame" - relating to the fetish in which the genitals are mildly burned with cigarette lighters or something similar.
The whole song is dedicated to ramming in (so to speak) the maximum number of puns relating to sexual practices.
Anyone can get the "country joys" joke, and I hope no-one reading this generally needs an explanation of "daisy-chains" or "powder in their guns". Speaking of which, in the final stanza, it actually says "would you like your ashes raked?" (Which rhymes with "a.s.ses r a ped" - and it's likely that both phrases apply).

Brian Eno – Here Come the Warm Jets Lyrics 4 years ago
On an old Eno fan forum, someone demonstrated, through "remixing" with a common graphic equaliser, that there are two overlapping sets of lyrics being montaged - and in doing so he appeared to confirm that fabled "down on our worms...nothing to pee" lyric - about oral sex in public toilets.

Stina Nordenstam – Murder In Mairyland Park Lyrics 4 years ago
I still think the song is about an actual murder - both victim and killer being persons known to the narrator.
Bear in mind that during this era Stina was writing songs entailing, amongst other things, witnessing another probable murder (First Day In Spring) and being a terrorist's confidante (Viewed From The Spire).

John Cooper Clarke – The Day My Pad Went Mad Lyrics 5 years ago
It sounds like it's about a poltergeist-haunted house turning on its occupant, but it was actually inspired by the aftermath of a burglary.

Frank Zappa – Tell Me You Love Me Lyrics 5 years ago
From remarks by Howard and by Pauline Butcher we can confirm the real meaning of this song.
Though not recorded as such, this is meant to be a duet in the same vein as the "do you love me forever" part of "Paradise By The Dashboard Light".
It was meant to be part of the Groupie Opera - where, in an alternate version of the story, instead of the groupie saying "I can't cum unless you sing me your hit record", she said "I can't cum unless you tell me that you love me". To which the musician, who'd been enthusing over bondage and bestiality moments ago, replies "wait! that's going too far!"
Cue this song - you work out who sings which bits.
(The next chapter in this version of the opera was of course Magic Fingers).

King Crimson – Neurotica Lyrics 5 years ago
Where did this transcript come from? I'm not at all sure about those "zoological" words near the end (I know AB has a neologism or two to his name, but...)
By the way - they're credited by their full names, except the vocalist who should be Robert Adrian Belew. (First name long since dropped, perhaps due to One Steve Limit...whoops wrong website!)

Frank Zappa – Magdalena Lyrics 5 years ago
@[mattalac:30006] By the way this is almost certainly inspired by one of the "Winnipeg Rangers" groupies, who'd left home because of just such an incident with her own father.
For those of you who might not know, Howard, who co-wrote the music (it started life as a setting of a Tolkien poem!) improvised the "father's monolog" part every time they played it - compare the Carnegie Hall and Montreux versions!

Frank Zappa – He's So Gay Lyrics 5 years ago
Bobby Martin is not gay, sawbones please note.
This song is about the character Harry-As-A-Boy [in the show Thing-Fish] who, strictly speaking, is also not gay, though he tries to sleep his way to the top with his male bosses. And, in later life, takes an intimate interest in ventriloquist dummies. (shades of Wild Bill maybe?)

Nightwish – Yours Is an Empty Hope Lyrics 5 years ago
Why should we ever have expected decent behavior from a morally deficient being who hasn't had a proper job for decades, and who profits from the myth that there is any such thing as intellectual property? (There isn't. Neither "music" nor "journalism" nor "web design" are actual productive work).
The song is about the "horror" of non-fans using the medium of the internet to express themselves authentically.
Tuomas, like any celebrity (or any religious person, or, tragicallly, most non-white persons of a certain age), believes he is part of some special elite above the rest of the human race, deserving of protection from authentic expression of other peoples' opinions (which they can designate "hate speech").
What's at the root of what we're witnessing here? Arrogance, or timidity, or megalomania, or all three?
It doesn't matter. What we know we're witnessing is advocacy of censorship. Censorship is nothing to do with governments, censorship is "anyone at any time attempting to police someone else's self-expression". It is inherently "dehumanizing" in a way that no act of violence is.

Michael Jackson – In the Closet Lyrics 5 years ago
Reply to HeeHee - and it's a nuisance having to drag this out -
the word is properly spelt "paedophilia", in keeping with its Greek etymological roots. When Americans (unlike every other English speaking nation) spell words like that differently and, worse, pronounce them differently, the result is nonsense. "Ped-ophilia" would be attraction to feet!

Gene – Olympian Lyrics 8 years ago
The thing nobody addresses: the music makes it pretty clear that "taking your life" is meant literally. So - is this an invitation to a double-suicide? Or...does he simply murder his "loved one"? After all, in the unpublished last verse (which I've commented on, on this page) it's "you", but clearly not "i", who is undergoing some transformation / transcendence.

@[Slothrop77:6825] YEah. She herself said that "paraffin" means cunt juice, but that I think is a red herring. There's a plethora of references to anal sex in her songs (main example "Roses" - also veiled references in "Salt Water Fish", "Hoops", "Pine" and - that "butter over me" song whatrever it's called). So how could we not think that "got me in the eye" means "in the brown eye" ?

B.B. King – Why I Sing The Blues Lyrics 8 years ago
Self explanatory -
but the verse about the illogical/mean-spirited regulations of welfare (not only the food-voucher system) is likely to ring a bell with a LOT of people in the UK nowadays.
Likewise the verse about (self-)destructive vagrancy laws which the "ruling clarses" use to shirk their responsibilities as humans - and which can vary a great deal from town to town.
Naturally I have grave issues with the "school" verse (see previous comments on this site)

James Brown – I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing (Open Up the Door, I'll Get It Myself) Lyrics 8 years ago
Self-explanatory -
but if I were him, talking to the "kids", I would have stressed self-education (a la the sleevenote to "Hungry Freaks Daddy"), because we all know that state education (the compulsory/formalised kind) is inherently destructive and abusive. (To educate yourself of course you need confidence in your own intuitive self-knowledge - something that for many people is broken irreparably, early in life, by both state education and the psychological abuses perpetrated by their parents).

Morrissey – It's Not Your Birthday Anymore Lyrics 8 years ago
I think it's quite clearly an incest-rape song. So far as we know this has never happened within the Morrissey, Walters, Maker, Dehgani or Young families. So I can only assume this lyric must be added to all the familiar stories of perverted priests as another sign of how long periods of (in this case self-imposed) chastity can do terrible things to the brain. And I know whereof I speak.

Rod Stewart – Having A Party Lyrics 8 years ago
Originally a Sam Cooke song

The song references:-:
"Mashed Potatoes" is probably "Mashed Potato Time" by Dee Dee Sharp
"I Know" - there are dozens of songs by this name - I would hazard a guess it's either the Ike & Tina Turner song, or perhaps the BB King one
"Soul Twist" is of course the King Curtis tune

They're dancing to the music on the radio because the homeowner can't afford his own stereo (this is In Tha Geto, remember!)
"Party time" radio shows were part of the musical furniture in the '50s and '60s - Santana first heard the original of "Oye Como Va" on a radio show just like that!

@[Beco:5114] Separation of - even categorisation of - "good" and "bad" memories is kind of impossible when you're contemplating the trauma-riddled period of your life (bound to be either adolescence or childhood) that made you the fuck-up you are today. That's my "understanding of" the song and Morrissey's emotional state when he was recording (as Sandie Shaw described it in her book)

Morrissey – Oh Phoney Lyrics 8 years ago
I think if the song is directed to a particular real-life person, it's most likely to be Tony Wilson. Not just because the Tony/Phoney pun is familiar but - think of how the lyric could apply to their strained relationship ("you pretend that you like me", which he did, in documentaries etc - and is it just me or does the song infer that these people have known each other for quite a while).
For the other theory - Morrissey had not yet met (and fallen out with) Bowie when this song was written in 1989. And "I Know Its Gonna Happen Someday" was two or three years in the future - he hadn't even started writing with Mark Nevin yet.

He may not have been gay, but you have to ponder the fact that his children (Prince Michael et al) were conceived through artificial insemination - he may have been the biological father, but - in everyday language - he couldn't actually fuck Debbie.

I'm not going to start on the paedophilia issue - but I always suspected, because of the time and place into which he was born, and because of his later advocacy of colonic irrigation and fasting, that the reason he was unable to have sex (normal sex anyway) is because the part of his brain that would normally be occupied by the sex drive was occupied by "something else"...something often forced on children even today (with the blessing of the medical profession who should know better) which has the potential to warped one's attitude to "physical contact in general"...I think you know what I'm talking about...

@[Aryth:4038] This debate belongs on another page. John was sober by the time the White Album properly began - after a heavy acid trip with Derek Taylor he resolved to kick drugs (of course he relented and started using heroin around the end of the year!). "Revolution #9" was probably an inevitability - he'd been making found-sound collages at home for years (as had Paul and even Ringo), and with Yoko around he had all the more impetus to do so, and to share them. (I'm a fan of Rev#9 btw!)

@[fireplace:4037] The guitar/keyboard break was actually written by George Martin - early takes had Harrison struggling to create a satisfactory guitar solo. Eventually his namesake took over - sitting at the keyboard he rattled off the riff that they play in unison during the break. It's ppssible that Martin had input into the ten-note compound chord that starts the song. [sources for this: bootlegs and the Secrets Of The Beatles book]

@[kfe2:3965] I dont think Side 2 is meant to be broken down like that. Even then they spoke of "the long medley", or "the big one" as being the majority of Side 2 viewed as a unified piece.
(BTW: People sometimes argue over where the medley begins: is "Because" a part of it? I'm sure it's not - 'cause "Because" is never reprised or alluded to, whereas "You Never Give..." develops into "Carry That Weight", and also Ian McDonald points out that the majority of that sequence is rotating between the keys of A and C, which would be their way of giving it some musical unity).

When one of these girls broke into Paul's house and stole a photo of his father (amongst other things), Paul had to liaise and negotiate with these girls (e.g the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday "scruffs") to find the culprit and get his stuff back.

@[ahimsa33:156] This forum isn't supposed to be out videos, but you've brought the subject up.
So - what is disgusting about it? There is nothing "sexually explicit" or even especially "suggestive" in the video. There is some nudity - but that means nothing in itself, and even in this video it means very little.
None of the sex acts alluded to in passing during the second half of the song are acted out or even symbolised. All there is, in the video, is a dance routine - and one that is no more "suggestive" than the majority of dance routines.
There are women, exposing some flesh but not all. But why is that objectionable? If you object to that, you must be afraid of sexuality itself - or at least you must be afraid of truthful, natural, unfettered sex(uality) itself.
In which case, you are lying to yourself about yourself, and - because you seek to ban/discourage (there is no difference, in truth) videos like this, you are obstructing other peoples' right to freedom of expression, in your attempts to force the rest of the world to conform to the aforementioned "lies". And that is the unforgivable act in this mlieu..

In my previous comment I obviously didn't make myself clear (!)

This song is popular BECAUSE
it advocates sexual roleplay scenes - and sexual truthfulness.
As I said before, it is saying - abandon your sexually-unadventurous, meek, timid, "good girl" persona. Admit publically that you're into fetish sex - rough treatment, discipline, simulated-rape etc etc. Because I've recognised the signs that that's what youre' into (that's what "I know you want it" means).

For a great many of us, "vanilla sex" is not just boring - it is disgusting in its implications. When people speak of "making love" they speak of psychological violence, governance. No male person (unless they are insane) CHOOSES to suffer the indignity of being governed, by anyone - they endured enough of that as children. What right-wing feminazi-types consider "degrading" sexual acts are actually the only honest, unpretentious ones, because however phsyically "violent" some of them are, there is no "psychological violence" (by deception, by falsity) attached to them. Enough women know that.
