i'm such a freakin idiot. i just looked up this song meaning, read all 10 above comments and half way through the last one thought that the person was dead on with the meaning. i looked over to see the name and it was one i have been using for years......then i realized i wrote the damn thing over a year ago. i have no recolection of writting it, didn't even know i had an account, but logged in guessing a password i would have used. prime example of how the big hand makes your memories fail. it's been a rough year, but i'm out of the big hands grip finally. |

no boubt drug addiction. opiate addiction to be specific. when you are physically addicted to a drug your body needs it in order to function normally. without it you become sick. that is what they call dope sick. you're cold but sweating, shivering but cold. once yu push the plunger in yur arm it's like a bomb. you have only another 12 hours before you are sick in bed again. it's just a giant circle. to anyone who even thinks about trying an opiate don't do it. you will lose everyhting you have. the only thing that keeps rock starrs and movie stars abe to function is that they have the money to support a habbit. but money isn't the only thing you lose when doing opiates. and don't think it won't happen to yu because it will. |

that is exactly what i interpret the song as. at first there was so much hope for me and my lover. i never met a girl like her before. we didn't belong together. she was model beautiful and i ws just a normal guy. but we were is such deep love nothing could tear us apart. then it just fell into disintegration. it all fell apart and i wrote out these same words and gave them to her. 20 years later she see's the mistake she made, but it's too late. |

i think it's about a cheap fuck. sorry to be blunt but that's what i get out of it. it's best played on play-out/ secret gig. sometimes just a primal cheap meaningless night of sharing one another can be good. it can make you love the one you love that much more. it can release tension built up between two people so that the relationship whether personal or business can get done. albert camus wrote another book that the song has many references from. M was the main characters first initial of his first name marcial (i doubt that is the correct spelling) i haven't read the book for a long time but when i di it was in college for a writting class. i almost fell out of my chair. robert takes lines directly from the book. robert uses lititure as inspiration for many of his songs, using references directly from the books. if you want look the book up, the same author wrote killng an arab. |

again, i think Harold is another use for t heroin. anything with an H usually refers to heroin. the song is sung like in a mono tone like he's on the nod, and doing heroin makes you feel like you don't care about anything. nothing ever get me down nothing ever gets in my way nothing ever gets in my mind just another heroin experience used as inspiration for a song. i used to just fix and listen to this song and whistle like at the end. sorry |

wild mood swings should have been an EP not LP. it has great songs and some b-sides anyway this is one of my favortite. not only is the use of the horns a great sound but the message is so uplifting. you can't just sit around feeling sorry for yurself because the world doesn't stop for you. you have to make it happen. you have to get up, get out and get gone. shake off those blue feelings, take a couple xanax and get happy. i was in a love triangle around the time WMS was released. i always was feeling blue bc i ws in love witha married woman who ws my girlfriend before she got married. so i decided to follow the cure on the east coast at the end of the tour. and this was my motto. i even put letter stickers n my truck that said, get up, get out and get gone. i loved it. i got to see them play plainsong in VA for the first time since the disintegration tour. plus the last two shows at radio city music hall were incredible. after wish i thought they were done but after seeing WMS tour i knew robert had much more to give. what's funny is the albany NY show was 9-11-96. kind of a wierd date. i still have a poster with the date on it that i tore off the venue wall. i sold videos to get from city yo city. jube productions were my videos. always sold with a nice cover and good quality and i thank the people that made that trip possible |

again this album was written entirely during roberts psychedelic drug stage. almost every song is LSD induced. not that it's not great writting but i think a short term effect refers to the complete madness that lsd brings on, but it only lasts for a relatively short term. if you call 12 hours a short term. for those that have not done LSD you can never understand how bizzare and different evertything is. it's a very powerful drug that opens your mind and lets you see things that exist in this world but are only understood while under the influence of acid. the blue glove is even crazier. i also have this video that is vry psychedelic. it's like a short movie of robert during the pornography/blue glove era. it's the closest thing i've seen on film to an lsd trip. the copy i have is very much copied therfore it has an even stranger view. it's almost like an alice in wonderland skit. i've been a cure collector for over 20 years now and i have some really amazing video. not just songs but interviews and backstage stuff. some really weird short movies. |

definatly not about robert giving a man oral sex. it's another drug induce dream. mostly of the psychedelic kind. that's the way acid is. one second you know what you're doing the next second you are in a situation that you have no idea how you arrived at that point. you can't even speak, your heart is racing and words come out of your mouth but they don't make sence to you. it's like theree is somone else in him speaking on his behalf. i don't think he woke up persay, he just came to the realization that he was in a situation that he didn't understand. the beatles are great at this. during "a day i the life" paul says "someone spoke and i fell into a dream" lsd is like that. one second everything is normal next second all hell is breaking lose. sounds like a good trip though |

i agre with most people here. this is about a love relationship that just could not continue. what the love is about or who it's about is hard to guess. i'm assuming it's a girl and although he loves her deeply, she wants something else and he realizes it's never going to work. true teenage angst in a love song. that one love that should be but can never happen. the lyrics on unplugged are great. he sings a verse witha line at the end that i could never make out. but i think he should have left it in the song. i think unplugged was done while they were recording wish. that's why it's a little different |

i agree, robert knew what he wanted this song to be but it just couldn't come out right. plus they had so much in them at this time, the early period. the song names can get confusing because bootleggers were never really that concerned with getting names right, just getting the product out as soon as possible. it turned out to be a staple of any great cure set. |

once again another incredible song. best played live at the secret gig or play out. this is another song about drugs. robert writes about what he knows about and the experiences he's had. this one is not about fun drugs but the horrible HEROIN. the big H. the big Hand, in those circles anything withan H is usually refered to as heroin. the first verse says it all. "The big hand makes all of your favourite things Like all your dreams go small And all your friends run away Until your memories fail And the words don't fit But the way the big hand smiles You just won't care about it take it from som eone who has been there and back. heroin will take away everything you have and you wont even care about it. the only thing that matters when you are a junkie is your next fix. and that is tha truth. for someone that has never been addicted it's hard to imagine a drug doing that. it's stronger than love, frienship, or sometimes the will to live. the third verse explains what it's like when you are dope sick and finally get a fix to get well. it feels beter than an orgasam and everything is fine. But when the big hand speaks It's like fireworks and heaven So you listen Don't think And wish for nothing at all And when the big hand sings It's like fireworks and friends by the time you've been addicted for a long time you don't even know why you are doing it. you don't undestand. you have no control anymore the drug controls your actions, like this verse So when the big hand holds up all your favourite things And with a touch like glass Starts to squeeze You don't ask "Why me?" You just slip to the floor Just slip to your knees you don't ask, you dont care, you just take that fix. he also mentions this in "open" about when he wants to go home after a show but the promoters promice he'll have fun at an after party there are ppl that want to meet him. and he just starres at the floor until someone slips him that fix. i don't understand the leaving alone part. he could be talking about getting off drugs, or just like every junkie says, this is my last fix. i'm not shooting anymore. thanks, for reading. i'm dave, been a cure fan for over 20 years. listened to every song 1000's of times wondering what he says. sometimes you can make a song fit a situation in your life and sometimes you can make a situation in your life fit into a song. |
