when I was at school and learning about the middle ages, I had to read a book with lots of small stories and one of them was about this girl, Beatrice, and a troubadour who fell in love with each other, and the ending is pretty harsh and heavy :O let's just say her father (who was against the couple) managed to give the troubadour's heart to the girl (not figuratively)... everyboydy in my class kept talking about this story and I think many of us were kinda traumatised :) |

when I read in rolling stone it was about a vampire it just made sooo much more sense to me... and the line "I see a storm bubbling up from the sea" reminds me a lot of the book Dracula, this line has a lot to do to something that happens in the story. |

what if the guy she loves died? i know it's tragical, but this way it makes sense the fact that they're kinda meant to be "it's written on the stars it seems" but that they can't be together.
maybe, when she says the price is too high for her to pay, she means that she'd have to be dead to so they can't be together, but she doesn't wanna die, so it's a very high price for her to pay.

i had never thought about the father/daughter relationship, but now it makes so much sense...
at the beggining i thought it was:

anyway, this song could also have that interpretation of the girl and the guy who are not really meant to be together but who had something beautiful in the past, something that she thinks should not be forgotten...

I think there's a girl who's in love with the narrator (a woman), but the narrator doesn't like women, but doesn't wanna hurt the girl who's in love...
even though it's a cover, in this version the lesbianism is very evident if that's your vision of the song. I mean, "i'm not afraid of feeling love, but i don't feel that way..." my vision is that there's a girl in love with another, but this other doesn't love her back. And if you don't think this song is about this, then the song is simply about someone who's in love with someone who doesn't feel the same...
