America – You Can Do Magic Lyrics 4 years ago
@[pk_boomer:32884] What i find to be not irritating but GRATIFYING is to be able to give a well deserved thumbs down to your comment over 14 years after you posted it. Who on earth spends the time to go to the trouble to find a site like this just to look up a song and leave douche comments like yours?

Blue Öyster Cult – Seven Screaming Diz-Busters Lyrics 5 years ago
To me the whole explanation about what's represented by a diz is no more than a misdirection about the main intent of the song: worshiping Lucifer. In the 70's Eric Bloom being brought to his knees by the light of Lucifer during this song was the climax (no pun intended) of their live shows. In the same vein, saying Abe Fortas and his ocular TB is what Harvester of Eyes is about is pretty comical.

Blue Öyster Cult – Harvester Of Eyes Lyrics 5 years ago
Eye gouging and harvesting are prominent in satanic ritual. Maybe the ocular TB was added as an addendum, but i don't think Abe Fortas has a whole bunch to do with the theme of this song. If it is what it appears to be about, no song writer would publicly admit it because their income would nose dive.

Wishbone Ash – Leaf And Stream Lyrics 6 years ago
I may have stumbled upon the inspiration for the lyrics and having done so i realize the music matches it perfectly. There is a relaxation exercise in cognitive therapy that uses leaves floating past on a stream. The procedure is found here:

Blue Öyster Cult – Golden Age Of Leather Lyrics 6 years ago
Would one of you care to take a stab at what this line means?
"And passed from man to man, a wanton child to dead to care
That each would find his pleasure as he might"

I find it difficult to explain or to attribute to any sort of hidden meaning.

Blue Öyster Cult – Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl) Lyrics 6 years ago
Since New Orleans has a very prominent section of town called The Garden District and within that district are some very famous above ground cemeteries...and since quicklime hastens the decomposition of bodies? Can't help but wonder if the Quicklime girls is tied into death somehow.

Fleetwood Mac – Landslide Lyrics 6 years ago
@[thebalancedram:24524] I have a tendency to agree with you, except that I can't see Stevie having the perspective of an older person when she wrote this....

As i write, it's 2018 and I've heard this song many many times and as an instrumentalist never paid attention to the lyric..but now as someone who qualifies for social security, i see it as both a parent and as a spouse..i am male, but i think this is geared more toward wives who try to put so much into a relationship with a man and as they age..perhaps he loses interest. It is quite something to have to face up to. Others have well stated what parents go through and it's universal. It's one reason why the parable of "The Prodigal Son" in the New Testament is so timeless in it's truth.

Marshall Crenshaw – Try Lyrics 6 years ago
With Mr Crenshaw it's always just as much about the beauty of the chords and harmonies as anything. In this case the production in the studio is so rich as well. We're going to keep going, we've had problems but we never, never give up. Surely most anyone can slow dance with a loved one to this.

Grateful Dead – Estimated Prophet Lyrics 6 years ago
Yes--jackstraw and mike oln are on point in my view. The song "The Wheel" and 'Estimated" both make references to Ezekiel's wheel...if you've ever seen the movie "Contact" the wheel within a wheel concept is illustrated nicely.....there are way too many overt Biblical references for this to be about deluded fans.

@[Lucky:18821] Loser Couldn't agree more..can barely stomach the riff..a poor display of Bruce's God given genius...and yet it is wildly popular..and as a Viet Nam era veteran Bruce does NOT speak for me about this war....i'd guess many others feel the same. His song "The Wall" though does capture the reverence at that place..but his politics have no place in my heart for the most part.

Wishbone Ash – The King Will Come [From Argus] Lyrics 8 years ago
An awesome song when i saw them do it live and a fine example of the "twin lead" guitar sound they were famous for. This song is about the Prince of Peace, the Lord God--Jesus Christ!

The lyrics are loaded with images from Revelation and other Biblical passages. A majestic guitar tribute to the Almighty..I'm proud of them for recording this and playing it live so many hundreds of times. Laurie Wisefield and Andy Powell could crank up those Marshalls and wail out killer solos and lead lines ALL NIGHT!! What a truly underrated ensemble.

AC/DC – Hells Bells Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm not surprised that Brian Johnson (the lyricist) says he doesn't believe in Heaven or hell or God. This is a common statement from those who are heavily into the occult. Satan is the king of liars and the great deceiver...his greatest trick is convincing people that he doesn't exist.

There is no deep hidden meaning or tribute in any of these songs...one need only read their song titles---highway to hell...if you want blood...shoot to thrill..hell ain't a bad place to be...hell's bells...and so many more. There's nothing hidden with these guys--they promote evil. It's that simple. Listen to them at your own peril and if you read this you can never say you weren't warned. You are without excuse.

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. Lyrics 8 years ago
@[rancidcrab:4778] I served between 1972-76. When they announced they were building a memorial--a wall with names..my first reaction was that it was too late and they could stick the wall up their collective arses with red hot pokers.

But then years later I went to the wall...it was so powerful--it moved me to my core. It was just after sunset and it seemed like everyone there knew innately that reverence was automatic in this place of honor. 58000+ names.. Hushed tones--whispers and respect. Today you'll find people there talking on their cell phones--it has come full circle.

@[stealthbeetle:4777] Sounds like your analogy has a lot more with trying to grind a political party axe than what the song is about. You know as well as I do (and I'm a Viet Nam vet) that even though Nixon called a halt in 1973--the war didn't really end til well into 1975. Reagan didn't take office until 1980--so what in the heck did you bring him into it for? Since you seem bent on bashing conservatives--bear in mind that much of the war's escalation took place under Kennedy and the VASTLY underrated LBJ--both Dems--and even though Nixon continued escalating--he ended the war 3 days after his 2nd inaugeration..and he also abolished the draft 4 days after that. As you know--he was a Republican,

Bruce Springsteen – Downbound Train Lyrics 8 years ago
An absolutely brilliant crafting of words, music and the emotion they can both represent and evoke. I think the lyrics are face value...everything was going fine..guy had a good job and a girl he loved. He lost the job--the girl left and he is devastated. At some point he has a dream about how he had planned for things to work out and the lyrical picture of the "joy of bursting through the front door to see her"and then when it's not real "he drops to his knees in anguish and cries and cries". These are amongst the most devastating lyrics ever penned.
At this same point the whole band comes back in with about as powerful an entrance as i've ever heard by any group....I praised God when Bruce played this in Nashville in 2014...

As a side note--he used the phrase "misty rain" in this song..it's one he favors as he used it again years later in Radio Nowhere and one other tune i believe.

Bruce Springsteen – Brilliant Disguise Lyrics 10 years ago
Another of Bruce's incredible compositions--hard to say one of his songs is the best--but this one, Thunder Road, Nothing Man and Downbound Train to me are some of his best. The last verse has always been interesting to me--"God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of"

I wonder if this means he knows the marriage is not a fit and knows it should end, but that he'll need a merciful God to see him through it if he doesn't sever the union?

Tommy James And The Shondells – Crystal Blue Persuasion Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is about Tommy's conversion to Christianity. You can go to the last book of the Bible and in the first couple verses see part of his inspiration. But Shekhinah light or glory is where he got the purse blue light idea. This song has a wiki page that explains it--and there's an interview on YouTube with CSN that Tommy did that gives good insight as well.

When you think about it, the spirituality of the song is pretty overt:
"Maybe tomorrow
When HE looks down
On every green field
And every town
All of His children
And every nation
They'll be peace and good brotherhood"

Bruce Springsteen – Nothing Man Lyrics 11 years ago
Easily one of very favorite songs and a brilliantly constructed one at that. So simple and perfect.

Theories abound on the meaning. What i want it to mean and the reason it always hits me so hard is that I think it's about survivor's guilt. And I agree with another poster as to it's probably having been retooled from it's original form to fit 9-11.

Have you ever survived a fatal car crash? Seen your friends get killed in war or elsewhere? Been shocked by someone committing suicide with no warning--someone you knew well? I can only imagine some of the scenarios that played out for the NYFD. There aren't many songs I'd rather sing in front of a crowd than this one, but I know there's no chance of not choking up and getting through it. This is an amzing piece of work from a once in a lifetime talent.

Wishbone Ash – The King Will Come Lyrics 11 years ago
Was always a Wishbone Ash but for some reason didn't know this song. Saw them for the 2nd time in a small club in Chicago in maybe 1982 and this song was so powerful i was beeging for someone to tell me it's title 2 minutes in to it.

How refreshing to see a recording (from what i would term sort of a heavy sounding band) that is based on Scripture. Particularly one who makes no claim to be anything other than secular.

Laurie Wisefield could jam ALL night--their twin lead sound was second to none!

Bruce Springsteen – We Take Care Of Our Own Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm a huge fan of Bruce's talent but not of his politics. Most Viet Nam vets like me do NOT support his positions on that war and wonder where he was? What kind of deferment did he get? The President he campaigned for is the most corrupt in history. If you check news outlets that aren't afraid to tell all, you'd see th headlines roll in weekly. Funny how he uses Chicago and New Orleans in the lyric. The two most corrupt cities in the country--Illinois is a total joke with like 4 out of the last 5 governors in jail or under suspicion.

As for Katrina--yea it got botched pretty bad. But the LA governor and NOLA mayor were offered aid ahead of time and said told no thanks, we got this. It's not all that hard to find this information. When the cavalry is told to stay home--who do you blame? The other party--naturally. More job loses and tons of poverty were caused by the inept handling of the oil spill and the order to lay off all the oil workers. Write a song about that.

Bob Dylan – Tryin' to Get to Heaven Lyrics 13 years ago
@ The Thorn Birds: one of the, if not the most decorated hero in American history is Sgt Alvin York--a devout Christian. Billy Graham has helped to change more hearts and impact more lives than anyone I can think of in US history. You may also enjoy reading the writings of Lincoln and Washington sometime. I could make a long list of military, sports, political and others who were Christian. I LOVE your patriotism, but you might want to guard against using all encompassing phrases like "all of its greatest heroes were freethinkers and freespirits" Perhaps I misread your intent though and if so, I apologize.

Bruce Springsteen – The Ghost Of Tom Joad Lyrics 14 years ago
I love Bruce to death and find that any other artist pales in comparison. No one else sounds as good and no one else writes as well. Having said that, all of the songs written today about the plight of the common man lose their meaning when being delivered by people who tour for 2-4 years straight--charge $97.50 per ticket and joke about how their wives try to keep the highly lavish lifestyles of their famous spouses in check.

It's easy for mega millionaires to fly into NYC or LA for a night and make an appearance on behalf of Haiti, but when was the last time you saw one of them with their sleeves rolled up and actually getting involved face to face? It rarely happens. Don't be so quick to deify these people. They are BIG TIME capitalists--no more --no less--regardless of their talent. Ask their roadies if they're humanitarians.

Once the tours have been completed ad nauseum what comes next? Special retrospective box DVD sets to keep the faithful pouring money into the machine--or DVDs of live concert footage. I truly do think Bruce is different and expect him to surprise somehow with some proceeds going to Haiti, but....

No one's perfect.

Is there anyone else out there who can take such a simple little pop song like this and have it contain phrases that are so artfully crafted that we've not heard before?

"you say you got no new dreams to touch"
"I'll take your sorrow if you want me to"

Really pretty, thoughtfully composed lines.

Bruce Springsteen – Devil's Arcade Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm a veteran and not really a big anti-war guy; but I love Bruce and know that he is. To me this is pretty much a flat out condemnation of the Iraq war. The Devil's Arcade is the game of war played by the pezzonovante (to borrow from Don Corleone) or the playground of big shots with soldiers as pawns.

The song is tough to unravel flow wise as the first paragraph seems to indicate a female with the inclusion of perfume in the lyric. Heroes getting made and bets getting paid all point to Iraq--slow poker games with Lt Ray in the "ward with blue walls" sounds like someone in a military hospital doing an arduous rehab/recovery. Metal and plastic where your body caved perhaps intimates a prosthesis of some type?

Buddys Charlie and Jim sound like fallen comrades. I somewhat concur with Barknoq except i think sex is involved only in the first paragraph. That's my dos centavos.

Bruce Springsteen – Let's Be Friends (Skin to Skin) Lyrics 14 years ago
It's funny how these songs hit people so differently. Maybe more so with Bruce than any other artist. I actually find this to be one of favorites from the The Rising along with Nothing Man. This is a fun song with a true "E" street groove and fell to it. I know the Rising is supposed to be serious and solemn, but on this tune and Mary's Place--fun is where it's at. I never read anything about race into it--could be--but I didn't dive deep. To me it's what it appears to be--a guy has his eye on a chick he digs--he makes his move and wants to get naked with her. He feels they've a lot in common (walking down that same line) and maybe there's been gossip about then or they are already an item--but between the two of them--they need to tear down the false fronts that prevent a true relationship and communing of spirits.

Bruce Springsteen – My Beautiful Reward Lyrics 14 years ago
My Beautiful Reward is another way of saying eternal reward or Heaven. We go through life looking for satisfaction from material things, but it never works. ("my own drug to ease the pain that living brings")
Jesus said to store up your riches in heaven and here on earth.

"Up on a hill, a sacred light shines" This is the house of God the Father--God has been referred to as The Light. Jesus said in John's Gospel--"in My Father's house are many rooms--I go there to prepare a place for you." The song says "I went down hallways from room to room, but none of then are mine." Perhaps the person does not fell like they're good enough for heaven and there is no room for them?

After this, the next two verses stump me and don't fit in with my theory on the first--so I could be completely wrong :c-)
