Far East Movement – Like A G6 Lyrics 13 years ago
Agree/disagree matters less than the fact that the above comment is exactly the purpose of this site. I'm sick of reading about how songs make everyone think of this ex, that a$$hole or some other asinine personal sob story lol. So thanks for not telling everyone why it makes you think of your first bf/gf, but rather dissecting the song into what you think its actual meaning may be. Cheers, and get slizzy!!! :-)

Oh, and just so i'm not like everyone else, my opinion vote goes as follows:
G6= Gulfstream G650
sizzurp= Rx cough syrup + sprite concoction
Three 6= Three 6 Maffia
Slizzard= Blitzed
808= THE drum machine hahaha

now put yo hands up!

Perfect paraphrasing SweedishFish. I don't think this intoxicating song could be summed up any better.

Brilliant! I like this story. It made me smile a little, but also made me sad (because it's so rare and special to have such an instant connection with someone), and made me wonder just how the two of you played it off when you were (re)introduced. Thanks for sharing.

I enjoy that "halstonremway" commented on how the music conflicts with the lyrics. For me this is one of the things that makes this song all the more poignant. There are so few songs that actually get a crescendo so very right. I think it's the music that is actually telling the real story in this song. They do remember each other, are flooded with memories, but are trying to stifle feelings from the past. They are also trying to protect themselves; which is why I believe their exchange with each other sounds so cool and standoffish. But inside old feelings are churning. I think the line:
"I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love"
is a major jab. It carries the intent to convey that what they felt for each other in the past is no measure to the "real love" they are now experiencing in separate relationships.

I also feel their resentment in the line "I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose." I think these are two people who thought they'd never see each other again, and therefore were caught feeling rather defensive. Thus resulting in what I feel is an intentional lack of concern delivered in the lyrics as they fumble to keep their cool, and not let on that the past meant so very much. To me it's brilliant how the music is able to project the hidden emotions of the protagonists, while the lyrics help to describe their cool and collected outward presentation.

Two Gallants – Despite What You've Been Told Lyrics 14 years ago
I love the brutal honesty of this song in the lyrics and in Adam's voice; it absolutely tears my heart.

I think this is a guy being completely honest with himself and with the woman he's about to sleep with, who by the way also knows exactly what she's getting into:
"You, you're just my next mistake, Like me to you"
and
"And I hate to sound so true, But I mean nothing to you"

He knows in words that what he's doing is wrong, but I think by how overwhelmingly jaded (agree w/ your choice of word there gablegrove) he seems, because he's been hurt by the "one he holds dear", he is giving himself permission to do what ever the hell he wants. He's too recently burned to actually feel guility about anything. I understand feeling like 'I've been hurt badly, and so I deserve to do what I want regardless of the consequences.':
"I should prove true to my emptiness, and stay here"

I think he thinks he should feel guilty, but really he doesn't. Actually now that I think about it, when the wound is still so fresh you don't even think about the consequences, all you are consumed with is finding any way to numb yourself even for just one night:
"But you know by now it's half past late, And I only came here for escape"

However he does want to make the point that he wasn't always who he is today. He once had a conscience, and probably in the past wouldn't have done what he's about to do.
"But despite what you've been told, I once had a soul"

Finally, he's going to sleep with her, but is clear he's not going to stay the night. He wants the destraction that this will be from his pain and the "escape", but nothing more than that:
"And yes, I guess I made this bed, But i'll take the sidewalk instead"
and
"So with the streetlights they shine bright, I'll be home tonight"
(which I take the reference to home as meaning actually home. I don't think "home" is necessarily a metaphor for a safe place he will feel with the girl tonight)

So much is said in this song. Your interpretation and main points picked out the exact parts also most striking to me. Thank you for posting what I couldn't find the right words for :)

I actually believe everyone suffers in some way from some form of addiction, and I can see this song relating to a vast array of addictions. I don't think dependencies or addictions always have to refer to substance abuse or something tangable like sex or money. For many it does, but for a lot of people I think they can be addicted to certain emotions. A need to be accepted, to be adored, to be needed or desired. Ever hear of an "emotional cutter?" This song makes me think of people like that. It's a person who knows exactly what they are getting into, knows they are going to lose everything in the end, but does it anyway again and again. I really believe you can be addicted to the way another person makes you feel; even if it keeps ending badly...or maybe especially if it keeps ending badly. I also love the sweet almost comforting melody of this song entwined with the heart wrenching lyrics. It makes me feel like even though some people acknowledge their dependencies, it doesn't mean they are willing to let the security of them go.

I thought the same thing. I like reading into lyrics and finding different interpretations.

Van Morrison – In The Garden Lyrics 14 years ago
Recently saw Van perform his Astral Weeks concert in Chicago. He sang In the Garden just before performing his Astral Weeks album, and it was such a gorgeous prelude. The hush in the theater as Morrison and the brilliant musicians seemed to make the stage inhale and draw everything in was mesmerizing especially as he whispered into the microphone. I already loved this song, but truly fell hard for it that evening.

And since this is suppose to be a site focused on the meaning of songs....I just want to note that the parallel drawn between religion and the relationship in this song adds such a feeling of reverence and purity to me.

I have trouble seeing this song as truly existential, the man clearly is concerned with what people think of him...nevertheless your post still made me laugh!

Going along with your 80's references...how about "You're the one I have decided who's 'one of my kind'". A nod to "Need You Tonight" by INXS??

And who cares if you're reading into it too much, I'd rather read that than how much a song makes you think of your ex!
