The Killers – Read My Mind Lyrics 13 years ago
In watching the video, I think the directors are mirroring that as well. They placed the Killers in Tokyo and in anachronistic clothing in every scene. I think they are trying to drive home the theme of movement through both space in time as being a sort of elixir of youthful emotion and excitement. Only through experiencing the unknown and moving forward will you continue to "breathe that fire."

The Killers – Read My Mind Lyrics 13 years ago
It is much deeper than just one man's struggle with autism.

I see it as a coming-of-age song about people leaving there childhood and attempting to create a dynamic new life. I see the "random lines" as a literary homage, they are cliche lines from literature, from film and fiction. In leaving his "2-star Town" he is seeking to "breath that fire again" and re-capture some of the emotion of an earlier youth. The random lines simply represent the vinyets of the adventures the await them, as though straight from the pages cheap, paperback fiction. I see this song as an ode to wanderlust and eternal youth.

Tommy Shaw – Girls With Guns Lyrics 13 years ago
What guy isn't into a girl who likes guns? It's every guy's dream to have a chick who loves guns, fast cars, and video games. The sad fact is, any girl who is into that stuff is probably not playing for the same team. It's the same for women. How many women have thought that they found Mr. Wonderful only to realize he was using her to get to her brother. YIKES!

Billy Joel – Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway) Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think we are out of the woods yet. Billy prophecy may yet come true. Between the Mafia taking over Mexico (drug cartels), the island bridges being blown (the Blind Sheikh's plot) and everyone just leaving for Florida by 2017. Of course, by 2017, I think Detroit will be totally depopulated but the song is not about Michigan.

Bob Seger – Turn The Page Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a powerful song. I haven't heard the Matalica version but I am willing to listen. To me, this has always been an anthem to anxiety and self-doubt. It is about regret and self-doubt but all the time believing that you are PROBABLY right to be doing what you ARE doing.

It is about persistence in the face of your own doubt. We can all identify with this and THAT is the source of the songs power.

Joe Jackson – Steppin Out Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you are on to something but I don't think it is so convoluted. I see the beginning perhaps as somebody in their old age recollecting how they should have seized the opportunities of youth better.

Styx – Half-Penny, Two-Penny Lyrics 14 years ago
I could never really understand the dialogue in the middle, during the instrumental. This is the firs time I've seen it transcribed.

Interestingly, James Young chose to name the two character "Angelo" and "Stosh" which are two names usually associated with Italians and Poles respectively. I never heard that until now.

Overall, I think this is easily JY's best song. I love the instrumental ending of the song but suspect that was really Dennis Deyoung that did that.

The Beatles – All You Need Is Love Lyrics 14 years ago
John was an idealist and a dreamer. It showed in his work and I respect him for it. I really do wish LOVE was all you needed. Not yet. Maybe someday.

This is why we don't use those progams for REAL translation. The German itself is quite nice. It's not Goethe but it's OK.

The Beatles – Come Together Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my least favourite Beatles song and also one of the most conspicuously Lennoneque (I am a McCartney Partisan). I think it is piece of Beat poetry put out 10 years late. Kerouac was already dead by this time.

Barenaked Ladies – Ode to the Krispy Kreme Lyrics 14 years ago
I never heard this song. I suspect it was one of the little ditties they play -- or just make up -- at their concerts.

Barenaked Ladies – In The Car Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a bittersweet song. I think the singer really has feelings for the girl but both are too young to really understnad their feeling and to act on them. But wha I find touching is the singer's memory of the girl. It is so unfailing and kind. Obviously many years are passing between the time in "her mother's house" and when he suspects she wikk finally hear his secret love for her. It's unrequited love, in a way, and that is the purest form of love.

Barenaked Ladies – Helicopters Lyrics 14 years ago
Why are people so hung up on World War II and Vietnam!?!?! BNL are Canadian! Canada had noting to do with Vietnam which was before the days of helicopters anyway. I see this, quite literally, as a brief 3 day tour of either Bosnia or Kosovo where Canadian soldiers were serving with NATO. BNL eludes to journalists going back to their hotels after going to battle sites indicates to me the likelihood that we are deeling with Bosnia since journalists often stayed in Mostar or Zagreb and then commuted to the war zone during the day. It also makes reference to the 24/7 news cycle with the talk about the "entertaining scandal". They also say that the world "loves it's irony" which makes me think the war was in Yugoslavia because that was one of the most ironic wars of the 20th Century.

Barenaked Ladies – Call And Answer Lyrics 14 years ago
I actually think there is a platonic level to this song. I see them as a former couple who have ended a deep relationship but must now move on to being "friends". He offers his eternal help and assistance to her but not without judgement and conditions -- the whole "first to crucify you". To me, this is not the blind acceptance of two lovers but rather the conscious and critical oversight of friends. These two are not lovers anymore but they still share a deep bond to each other. It is for that reason that I love the song because it shows a higher level of emotional committment, one that is beyond sex and the romantic. To me, the song is a ode to the ex-girlfriend/ex-wife with whom you can no longer "be with" but who will always be a part of your life.

A good translation; vielen dank. I originally translated "Schulden" as "guilt" but "debt" probably makes more sense.

Styx – I'm O.K. Lyrics 14 years ago
Dennis Deyoung has always been a boundless optimist. He is not a cynic like Leonard Cohen and he is not a zealot like REM or U2 for their causes. This always appealed to me. This song is about his sense of love for the individual no matter who they are. This is a theme that we see through Dennis' song and in his solo work.

Styx – Lights Lyrics 14 years ago
I wish I could say it was but sadly, I think Tommy is speaking about getting backed. I think the song connects to "Boat on the River" and "Snowblind". If you can insert "faith" instead of pot, GREAT. It gives the song a higher meaning. As much as I love Tommy Shaw, I never saw him functioning at the level. His "lights" is another for the refer.

Styx – Haven't We Been Here Before Lyrics 14 years ago
Easily one of my top-5 favorite songs by Styx. I know it was not a big hit with a lot of fans since this marked the point where Dennis really just got carried away with himself. The song is bittersweet. I never tire of it even after 25 years.

Styx – Boat On The River Lyrics 14 years ago
Sadly, I think this song is about getting stoned. I love Styx, I have since Paradise Theater came out in 1980. I think Tommy Shaw is using the "boat on the river" as metaphor for the feeling of serenity that he gets from being high. Generally, I don't like drug songs but we need to keep this song in the context of other Styx songs like "Lights" and "Snowblind".

Keane – Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics 14 years ago
I know everyone sees a girl in here but I don't see her. I see the singer lamenting his advancing age. I see him getting older and looking for a more stable and predictable life. It could be a girl but it could just be some sort of routine or a "simple thing" like a certain nature walk. I think the singer wants to trascend the world that he has had up until now.

Leonard Cohen – Everybody Knows Lyrics 14 years ago
I like the Don Henley version of the song the most, its powerful. The song is the cynic's anthem. It is a haunting piece that bemoans the dreariness and sordidness of reality through the eyes of a now heart-broken idealist.

Styx – Suite Madame Blue Lyrics 14 years ago
Dennis DeYoung actually shows himself to be very conservative in a way. His later works of Kilroy and Paradise Theater demonstrate a nostalgia for the past and a desire to reconnect with earlier times. He is clearly in the thrall of America in this song, released in 1975, I think. He notes that Madame Blue has "You conquered the world and more ..............heaven's door" an elusion to both American hegemony on Earth and to the American presence on the Moon and in Space (Skylab). It is a fine piece of music.

Mike And The Mechanics – A Call to Arms Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is interesting if taken with several of Mike Rutherford's other offerings on his first and second albums. His songs "Silent Running", "Take the Reins", "Call to Arms", and then "Why Me" all seem to explore the same theme of insurrection or resistance against some sort of foe. Rutherford seems like a dedicated Libertarian who frets the loss of Freedom and an possible future Dark Age of authoritarianism of some sort. Although these songs all date from the 1980s, I think they are telling and especially relevant for today.
