Rise Against – Re-Education (Through Labor) Lyrics 14 years ago
So many incorrect assuptions, I haven't the time or the patience to comment on them all. Suffice to say if you get just one correct thing from this song make it the followiing part:

"Just talk but promise nothing else" has nothing to do with the government or politicians. It is a direct link to the previous line that says "Like cause without rebels" meaning people who believe in the cause yet are unwilling to actually DO anything about it. Think about a cause, say a revolution that everyone wants and is talking about but there is not anyone actually standing up and revolting. What you are left with is "talk and nothing else"..... Basically that is what we all are. For everyone that sees things like global warming, animal/human cruelty, war and inequality and sits there thinking "wow this is bad, things need to change" yet does not get up off their asses and do anything....the lines of this song are for you.

Rise Against – Like The Angel Lyrics 14 years ago
I have read elsewhere that this song is about Tim's daughter. I initially took it to be about his girl when he is out on tour, but it also works for his daughter too.
The "eyes penetrate" part seems to mean more love/lust, but I think children can have that penetrating stare. Like when a child really looks up to and loves their parent the stare can penetrate the soul and stir emotions.....

Rise Against – Ready To Fall Lyrics 14 years ago
You are mostly correct. RA explain it on their video "Generations Lost" - the film clip is an interpretation by a director on what the entire band stands for. There is no link to the lyrics apart from some symbolic metaphors that could possibly be drawn.

That is the great thing about most music, and especially Rise Against (but never pop music) - song meanings are a matter of interpretation. People can like songs for different reasons but mostly the effect it has on them and thoughts emotions it can bring to mind. People often relate lyrics (correctly or otherwise) to things that have happened to them. That's what is so cool, it's all about being affected by the music and giving it meaning to you. I doubt a band will care if you don't get their exact intended message as long as you are affected by it and pay for the album.... (insert cynical laugh here--->)

F O B are gayest sh!t I have ever seen or heard. Tryhard popsters sprouting three radio friendly chords with minless uninspiring lyrics and acting like punk wannabes the benefit of teenage girls.

"Where have all the intelligent people gone?"

Sorry but you are wrong. Rise Against pointed out on the Gnereation Lost DVD that the film clip is a directors interpretation of Rise Against's whole attitude, not anything specifically to do with this song.

Rise Against – Prayer Of The Refugee Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, what a narrow narcissistic simple-minded post from stfuworld. The grammar, spelling and punctuation of the post, even the username, reek of it.

Government, corporations and religion are directly responsible for all of the ills in our world. Enforcing ones beliefs, ideals or pursuit of wealth and material possessions onto others under the guise of 'national peace, saftey and stability or wealth is the height of hypocricy. It is governments that allow this to happen because people do not stand up to them to dowhat is right.

Rise Against's message is one of unity and brotherhood for the good of mankind, animal-kind and the planet. Worrying more about money and possessions than people, animals and the enviroment will lead to the destruction of everything we hold dear. We must stand up for those who cannot stand for themselves. Stand up for all defenceless life on this planet and actually do something about it. Talk is cheap. As Tim McILrath sings in Re-education (through labour) - "Like causes without rebels, just talk and promise nothing else"....

What is the use of being in a secure, wealthy situation when the world burns around you. To quote an Native American - "Only when the last buffalo is slain, the last plant killed and the last fish pulled from the sea will the white man realise he cannot eat money"

Rise Against, like many other bands often have film clips that project their general attitudes rather than that of th individual song.
I'd be careful before trying to interpret lyrics by looking at how a director/writer portrays it on a video clip.

African slaves? WTF? How and where could that idea possibly come from. Have you heard it or seen the film clip?

Rise Against – Hero of War Lyrics 14 years ago
You hit nail on the head gj. The active recruitment (aka deception) of impressionable young people by the US military recruitment officers is shameful. The indoctrination into US military life takes these young people into an horrific world instead of the "see the world" scenario they are led to believe. It is brainwashing clear and simple, these people who probably would never have thought of raising a fist in anger are pushed along the production line, exiting as fully trained killers solely focused on whatever goal/belief/religion their government has brainwashed them to. The song shows what a generally nice man is capable of after being put through the US military wringer and placed in hellish situations.
This is unfortunately EXACTLY the same attitude of the opposing sides, except they have different ideas/beliefs/gods. It is absolutely abhorrent that ANYONE could think to invoke a god to assist their side in matters of war and killing. Its like a deadly serious game of "my imaginary friend is better than your imaginary friend"
If you bully someone hard and long enough they will fight back however they can. It is the US government policies that create the recruitment need to replenish the healthy young men/women dying in foreign countries because those countries do not adhere to the American belief system. The soldiers at war are not at fault and deserve all of our support and well wishes for safe returns to normal peaceful lives.

GO AUSSIES!!!

Rise Against – The Approaching Curve Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is not as clear cut as some have suggested it be with regards to a break-up or suicide song. I don't think it has much to with death at all except in regards to the death of their relationship. The main theme of this tune is the breakdown of a relationship that was once good and the idea that relationships are not easy or clear cut. Many loving relationships end, and many loveless ones linger.
In this case, and for reasons only lightly touched on, the male has decided on a break or separation. It doesn't really matter hy but it is hinted at with the line "Then I was shouting, now pouring confessions, having no answers, or solutions, and we barely could even hear the questions", but the woman is less agreeable with the outcome, evident by her comment "why are you doing this?". It is clear that they once had something great and even as it deteriorated projected that to the outside world even as they were decending into tears. They both still care and perhaps even love each other but the male has decided it is better for both (or maybe just him) to separate, rather than stay together simply because they are used to it and it is what they know.
The drive could be for any reason, perhaps they took a drive to talk about things and the part we hear is after the decision has been made, they may be returning from a trip that did not go well and has led to this point.

The title of the song (The Approaching Curve) is a metaphor for this decision to separate. It is a new curve in the road, something different and neither know what is around the bend. I don't think it is clear that death is imminent even though some lyrics suggest that may be the case. I feel when he refers to "drowing'" it more symbolic of the relationship. He is saying that the tears that killed (or drowned) their relationship will have "long since dried" down the track after their separation. I feel he is saying that even though it is bad now these tears will dry and everyone will only remember their good times because that is all they showed. "As we were, so perfect ,so happy. They'll remember, only our smiles because that's all they've seen. Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned. As we were, so perfect, so happy."

The final part about the curve aproaching and her making no indication of slowing does not mean she has decided to crash and take their lives. It is a metaphor for the unknown. Yes she may have that in her mind, she may not, I don't think we are meant to know that only that it is an ption in the unknown ahead. I think no one knows what is going to happen at that curve or in the future around that bend. It is symbolic of the ending of their relationship, the curve you cannot see around to the other side. The bridge of the chorus and instrumental gives us "dont put me underground, I was meant for a life somewhere else". I do not think he is talking about underground as in being 'dead and buried'. Being put underground would be outcome if they stayed together, trapped in this happy/unhappy cycle. He wants a life somewhere else, not this life.

The part where he says "Please love give me the wheel, before both of our hearts you will steal tonight" is the clearest indication that they both did, and perhaps still do love each other. He is saying that if he doesn't take the wheel and direct things where he wants to go (ending it) that love could steal their hearts and direct him into something he does not choose.
