I always interpreted this song very literally, as a song about the death of someone you're madly in love with, while you're madly in love with them. That's a very literary idea, isn't it? It happens to be the dominant theme in most of Edgar Allen Poe's work (The Raven, Anabelle Lee), and it's also present in Nabokov's Lolita to the extent that Nabokov drew upon the works of Poe to develop the character of Humbert. Knowing Robert Smith, his sensibilities, and his tendency to find inspiration in literature, it's not far-fetched to consider that the idea of a literal death (and the connection to Poe) may have been floating around in the back of his mind when he was writing this song. If you pay close attention to the lyrics, you find a great many parallels. Thus, I've always thought of this song as a musical homage to Edgar Allen Poe, and that poetic concept of someone dying while you're madly in love with them. Also, it's just more interesting to think of it this way than to think of it as another pop song about a break-up. |

actions/behavior > verbal communication that's what I read from this song. Every time a boyfriend tells me he loves me for the first time, I feel like rolling my eyes and saying "well duh, you act like it" or "yeah I know, I don't need you to tell me that". Of course, I never actually say this. But it seems like the narrator is commenting on the triviality of words like these. He is emphasizing the power of non-verbal communication. Words don't matter -- which is why I hate it when people tell me they love me. Things like that are more effectively SHOWN than TOLD. |
