Missy Higgins – Steer Lyrics 13 years ago
To me this song is defined by its title, 'Steer'. It means that you no longer allow your circumstances or other people dictate how you live your life and the direction in which it will go.

It's about being free of the weight of other people's expectations and treasuring the beauty of the world. It's about being able to conquer anything. It's about finding who you are after a long time searching. It's about realising how precious life is and living it to the fullest. And most of all, it's about being yourself and deciding who you are and where life will take you, and knowing that:

'The search ends here
Where the night is totally clear
And your heart is fierce
So now you finally know
That you control where you go
You can steer'

Lenka – The Show Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe this song is about a girl who is confused about life and love. She thinks she has to change to fit in, but only wants to be herself. She's afraid of living life, and she's telling herself that she needs not worry about what anyone else thinks of her, but just to enjoy life and take things as they come.

She believes that other people aren't living life to the fullest - they don't realise that they have a free 'ticket' to the 'show' that is life, and that they should make the most of it.

She says people 'want their money back', but she thinks they should 'just enjoy the show', instead of worrying about the future - living in the moment.

I think the essence of the entire song is 'living in the moment', understanding that we've been given a free ticket to the 'show' that is life, and we should grasp the opportunity to see this 'show' with both hands. We shouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks or what the future may or may not hold.

All in all, amazing song. Such meaningful lyrics, but a fun melody. : )

Josh Groban – February Song Lyrics 13 years ago
The character in this song is someone who has lost sight of who he is, who he wants to be, and what's important to him. Ive always wondered what the significance of the phrase 'February Song' meant. I think it could mean that maybe February was the point in his life when he got 'lost'.

He is hopeful that one day, he will be able to move past the hurt, and 'open his eyes', and he wants his loved ones to know that one day, he will move past this and come back to them.

He wants to return to the days when he didn't have to worry about the cruelty of the world, when it was painted in solid colours, when it were either one or the other.

Again, he's not happy with where he is in life.

He wants his loved ones to konw that he he is facing a dark time, and asks forgiveness for being distant from them. He again promises that he will get better with time.

He says that he treasures the simple things in life, that he doesn't need anything more than what he's got, that what he 'needs to love' is right there with him - possibly just his loved ones. It links back to 'colours breaking into shades'. He only wants simplicity.

Again, he asks forgiveness for 'slipping away'. He elaborates that he finds it hard to 'find his ground', possibly relating back to being lost - he's trying to find his place in the world. But he then says he 'keeps on falling as he tries to get away from this crazy world'.

Once again, he does not like that the world is now so complicated, and all he wants to do is get away, but can't.

Again, he promises that he will find himself and come back to his loved ones. The song ends the same way as it began, with him telling hi loved ones that he is lost in a 'February Song', but promises that he will come out of it eventually.

This use of third person could possibly be interpreted as a way of distancing himself from the person he doesn't want to be.

Anyway, that's my take on the beautiful 'February Song'. It's one that's really close to my heart.

Missy Higgins – The Special Two Lyrics 13 years ago
This one is such a beautiful song. I've known it for ages, but I never really listened to the lyrics properly before now.

As a whole, I think it's about a girl who's singing about and to her sister, with whom she has a broken relationship.

My take on it, stanza by stanza, is this:

--

I've hardly been outside my room in days,
'cause I don't feel that I deserve the sunshine's rays.
The darkness helped until the whiskey wore away,
And it was then I realized the conscience never fades.

When you're young you have this image of your life:
That you'll be scrupulous and one day even make a wife.
And you make boundaries you'd never dream to cross,
And if you happen to you wake completely lost.

--

This part to me is bout being young and imagining a really fantastic, bright, carefree life, making 'boundaries'. Then, when you get older, you overstep those boundaries, and you feel really guilty and unsure of who you are.

--

But I will fight for you, be sure that
I will fight until we're the special two once again.

--

She's saying to her loved one, perhaps a sister, that no matter what happens, she will try to mend their broken relationship, so that they can have the relationship that they did when they were younger, when they were 'the special two'.

--

And we will only need each other, we'll breathe together,
Our hands will not be taught to hold another's,
When we're the special two.
And we could only see each other, we'll bleed together,
These arms will not be taught to need another,
'Cause we were the special two.

--

She's saying here that their relationship as 'the special two' can withstand anything, that they don't need anyone else if they have each other, that they will stand by each other no matter what, like they used to.

--

I remember someone old once said to me:
"That lies will lock you up with truth the only key."
But I was comfortable and warm inside my shell,
And couldn't see this place would soon become my hell.
So is it better to tell and hurt or lie to save their face?
Well I guess the answer is don't do it in the first place.

--

Here I believe she's saying that she did something to the other half of 'the special two', but couldn't decide whether to tell her or not, because she felt so guilty about it. She reminisces about receiving advice that lies would 'lock her up' with 'truth the only key'.

She is confused about whether she should tell the other person and hurt her, or lie to her and keep her from hurting.

She answers her own question, saying that 'the answer is don't do it in the first place', again suggesting regret for what she did.

--

I know I'm not deserving of your trust from you right now,
But if by chance you change your mind you know I will not let you down
'cause we were the special two, and we'll be again.

--

She's asking her loved one for forgiveness, to put it simply. She knows that her loved one doesn't trust her any more, and wants to atone for her mistakes. She wants to go back to being 'the special two'., and is adamant that she will make things right, so they can 'be again'.

--

And we will only need each other, we'll breathe together,
Our hands will not be taught to hold another's,
When we're the special two.
And we can only see each other we'll bleed together,
These arms will not be taught to need another...
'cause we're the special two.

--

Again, she says that they will need no-one else, because if they have each other, they are inseparable and unbreakable.

--

I step outside my mind's eyes for a minute.
And I look over me like a doctor looking for disease,
Or something that could ease the pain.
But nothing cures the hurt you, you bring on by yourself,
Just remembering, just remembering how we were...

--

She tries to analyse what she can do to find a 'cure' for the pain she feels over what happened to her relationship, trying to see it from different eyes - she believes that this may make her problem easier to solve.

She comes to the conclusion that there is no cure for the hurt she feels at her loved one's hands, because she remembers how they used to be and knows that they are no longer who they used to be, because of what happened.

--

When we would only need each other, we'd breathe together,
Our hands would not be taught to hold another's,
'Cause we were the special two.

And we could only see each other, we'd bleed together,
These arms would not be taught to need another,
'Cause we were the special two.

--

This final chorus is one of hope. She is now determined that she will fix the relationship. She wants desperately to have the relationship she once did, She believes that she and her loved one will become 'the special two' once more.

Nightwish – Ghost Love Score Lyrics 14 years ago
Ghost Love Score is an absolutely ingenious song - very cleverly symbolic and metaphoric.

My interpretation of the title of the song, Ghost Love Score:

A ghost is usually a spirit of a dead person, but instead, the character has made the love she once shared the ghost - something that is gone but still haunts her. This song is obviously a score, but is written by the character - 'still I write my songs'.

--

Now my interpretation of the lyrics:

We used to swim the same moonlight waters
Oceans away from the wakeful day

The first stanza could have multiple meanings: Perhaps the character is saying that she and her love used to have so much in common, and had no cares in the world.

Or alternatively, she could be saying that she and her love used to swim at the same place often at night, and never knew that their relationship would be torn apart so brutally.
--

My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
If you be the one to cut me
I`ll bleed forever

In the chorus, the character is saying that she would gladly put her life on the line for her love, because she'll never stop loving him, but if he betrays her, the figurative wound would never heal.
--

Scent of the sea before the waking of the world
Brings me to thee
Into the blue memory

In this stanza, she says that the scent of the sea in which she an her love used to swim helps her to remember all the good memories that they shared.
--

A siren from the deep came to me
Sang my name my longing
Still I write my songs about that dream of mine
Worth everything I may ever be

This one is a bit more difficult to interpret. Perhaps the siren is her own mind, tempting her to be vengeful, but she is trying to fight it by dreaming about the relationship that she and her love had, and expressing her emotions through song.
--

The Child will be born again
That siren carried him to me
First of them true loves
Singing on the shoulders of an angel
Without care for love and loss

Perhaps here she's thinking about how she just wants to be a child again, and that maybe her mind will let her be pure as an angel again, and not have to worry about love and loss.
--

Bring me home or leave me be
My love in the dark heart of the night
I have lost the path before me
The one behind will lead me

Perhaps here the character begins to get bitter and angry over her love's betrayal, and just wants him to make up his mind whether he loves her or he doesn't. She's confused and lost, but perhaps in saying that 'I have lost the path before me, the one behind will lead me' that although she doesn't know where to turn, there's someone from her past to help her.
--
Take me
Cure me
Kill me
Bring me home
Every way
Every day
Just another loop in the hangman`s noose

Here, the bitterness the character feels escalates to an all-time high - maybe she's saying that he's played with her for too long, and, it's just giving her more and more grief and emotional agony.
--

Take me, cure me, kill me, bring me home
Every way, every day
I keep on watching us sleep

The character repeats her plea for her love to endf her agony and stop toying with her. Her 'siren', in other words, her mind, keeps replaying the nights when she and her love slept - usually a state of complete serenity. The character is angry, and misses the peace that they once had, like when they slept.
--

Relive the old sin of Adam and Eve
Of you and me
Forgive the adoring beast

Maybe her love has previously thought that their relationship was wrong or immoral, but the singer of the song just wants her love to take the forbidden fruit. (The old sin of Adam and Eve). She says that she wants her love to take the forbidden fruit, and make the sin theirs, too. She then makes a plea, perhaps not even to her love, but to God, to 'forgive the adoring beast', meaning that she believes it's wrong to take the forbidden fruit, too, calling herself a 'beast' and asks for forgiveness because she adores her love.
--

Redeem me into childhood
Show me myself without the shell
Like the advent of May
I`ll be there when you say
Time to never hold our love

Perhaps here she says that she wants to go back to being a child when it never occurred to her to hide her feelings.

Then she says that even though her love may not say to her directly that it's 'time to never hold our love' (it's over'), that she'll know ('I`ll be there').
--

Then comes the final chorus key change - perhaps this symbolises her changed feelings toward her love.
