@[SonataFanatica:12560] But there's no way he could have known that long in advance that he would ABSOLUTELY pass away on a Monday. |

@[SonataFanatica:8218] Obviously the song was written long before it was released. Bowie began writing the songs for the Blackstar album right after he was finished with The Next Day. Recording of Blackstar began at the beginning of 2015, so I don't think Bowie foresaw the exact day of his death; it's just a weird coincidence. |

David Bowie – Loving the Alien Lyrics

I completely agree that it's about religion causing more conflict than it resolves.
I always thought that the line "Your prayers will break the sky in two" refers to how each side in a conflict prays to God for help, and both sides believe that they have God's favour.
It could also mean how people pray for solutions to their problems, as if their personal worries are so important that God would crack the sky in two just to descend to Earth to help them. |

Billy Joel – You're My Home Lyrics

As per 'instant pleasure dome', I saw it as him listing historical periods of homes.
Castle - medieval
Cabin - 19th Century-present
Instant Pleasure Dome - home of the future?
It's just what I thought when I first heard it. |

Jethro Tull – Locomotive Breath Lyrics

When I was little, I took this song's meaning literally.
Some guy catches his wife cheating on him with his best friend, so he 'stole the handle' (i.e. - the brake) of a train in a suicidal fit. The 'children jumping off' are, of course, people leaping from the train trying to save themselves.
After hearing more Jethro Tull, I'm 99% sure there is a deeper meaning (as told in other comments), but whenever I hear it I always have these literal scenes playing out in my head. |

Loreena McKennitt did a version of this old ballad called "The Bonny Swans." You should give it a listen. |

It sort of reminds me of the later song by Elton John / Bernie Taupin, "Madman Across the Water," in terms of content. |

No, the "Bardo" refers to the Tibetan mystic concept of a transitional state between human lives. He says "If I don't explain what you want to know, you can tell me all about it on the next Bardo." Meaning, he'll tell you about it some other time- perhaps in another state of existence- but not now. |

Tom Waits – Road to Peace Lyrics

He's not blaspheming at the end. You're just as much of a fundamentalist nutcase as the antagonists of the song. Waits is trying to convey the point that we can't rely only on God to bring world peace in our time and we need to take some action ourselves. Instead of both sides of the Middle East conflict thinking that God wants them to blow the shit out of the other guy, they should start thinking in more down-to-earth terms to negotiate peace. God is good for faith, but human civility is needed also in order to get closer to peace.

Does anyone know why in all the lyrics I find for this song, in the 4th paragraph he says "wafer thin", but the word "wafer" is replaced with a +? |
