Céline Dion – S'il Suffisait D'aimer Lyrics 5 years ago
@[daimyodefunk:28163] I don't speak the language fluently but I understand French well enough to interpret the song, especially having lived through it myself.

Love is supposed to be the most powerful force in the world. But sometimes, loving each other is just not enough to make a relationship work, because people have faults that keep them from being a good match for each other. She wishes that it was enough. That someone could tell her what she lacks, so she could go back and change something about herself so that he would have wanted her, or that she could have stayed with him. So that she wouldn't have to look at everyone else who's in a happy relationship and feel sad about it.

How did they make their relationships work? Why couldn't I have done the same thing? Why did I have to screw up and them succeed?

It's an utterly devastating emotional state to be in, and not something I wish on anyone.

Coldplay – Fix You Lyrics 5 years ago
When you've tried your absolute hardest, walked the most miles, bent the furthest over backwards, for someone else, and it doesn't work out the way you thought it did, you find yourself so fixated on what you thought would happen, that you can't back up. You're like a truck stuck in a swamp, thinking the only way to get through the swamp is to drive further forward, convincing yourself that you can heal something that's irreparably broken - because you'd feel terrible if you gave up on something just because it's hard.

You've been heartbroken by this person, but you still want them in your life as a reminder of all the happy times you shared together. You can't just go from talking to someone every day, dreaming of forever with them, to letting them pass out of your life like everyone else you meet on the street and never see again. You've never felt the same way about anyone else and may never feel it about anyone else, so you just chase after what once was, even though in the back of your mind you know what you used to have, will never come back again.

You know you made a grave mistake that screwed things up. You can't forgive yourself for it, and you take it upon yourself as your punishment, to fix what you broke. But every time you mend one wound, another two open. Until eventually you can't take it anymore and in a burst of rage at yourself, sweep your once beautiful masterpiece off the table, to shatter on the floor.

A thousand shards of heaven fly upward from the concrete and pierce your flesh to the bone. You know you'll never put them back together. But you feel ever so slightly at peace, that you don't have to spend your every waking hour trying to fix it.

And instead, you can spend your time trying to "fix you."

Even if it's going to hurt for who knows how long.

(I am so sorry, my friend. I wish things hadn't ended up like this. I'll miss you for always. Until we meet on the other side and all will be forgiven.)

@[ahanix1989:21586] I think the lyrics are formatted that way to fit the cadence of the vocal and how it makes the point in the lyric. It feels as if each declaration of "freedom" (by society) is cut off by the reply (from the ruling class).

Actually, James Hetfield believes in some form of a higher power as of an interview this year. I do not believe he has a specific faith despite his tattoos of Christ. However, the lyrics to this song are profound from a spiritual point of view if you interpret it that way, and that Oscar Wilde quote (all sinners a future, all saints a past) is quite commonly discussed in theological circles.

Maybe you will find this helpful to understanding Aquarius; the song is about a girl, but the story is far more complicated than your average love story (and a much better love story than Twilight).

Pain of Salvation – Of Two Beginnings Lyrics 10 years ago
The premature sexual metaphor is extremely uncomfortable, but since I believe Daniel's intended meaning (expressed by Aran above) is that love and sex, and even the intimacy that sex represents which can also be found in different forms of relationships, are too much for a child or young adult to handle, and giving oneself away too soon is a choice that we'll regret forever, I can eventually swallow it. It's still not something I would play around young listeners for a LONG time, if ever.

Threshold – Long Way Home Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of the several Threshold songs that shows its writer's Christian faith in that the song is originally intended as a monologue from a person to God, although Richard has left the door open for the addressed subject to be a significant other, friend, teacher, or other person.

The narrator is trying to "drive" without a higher power at the wheel, surprised that the God he turned his back upon would still refuse to give up searching for him, and learns again that following his own route and not God's is a fruitless exercise. I have experienced this on countless occasions and greatly appreciate the ingenious craftsmanship and honesty that went into writing this song.

The navigation theme appears fairly often in Richard's lyrics and was at the forefront on Dead Reckoning, as well as the spiritual message, and both were combined on "Pilot in the Sky of Dreams", a signature song from the group nowadays. "Long Way Home" is a classic piece of uplifting poetry from one of progressive metal's best wordsmiths.

You are absolutely correct; I am thankful you have done your research. Few people are aware of this album's conceptual originality, ingenuity, depth, suitability for the musical surroundings, and most importantly of all, its devastating spiritual resonance. Several songs on this album affect me in the ethereal manner most commonly characteristic to overtly religious music; the ending to this song is one of those moments. This band taught me so much.

I put these lyrics up just in time, then! I delayed this list, out of those on this newly released album, for some time because I couldn't find all the spoken quotes, despite Threshold telling its fans the source material. I'm not surprised your attention was captured by JUST the lyrics, because this British melodic progressive metal band has received fan and critical acclaim and respect for intelligent lyrics, often touching on socio-political, philosophical, and spiritual & religious subjects. The album this comes from, "March of Progress" (2012), is a fine introduction to Threshold, and I would also recommend "Critical Mass" (2002) with the band's longest-running, popular, and now deceased vocalist Mac, instead of Damian Wilson on this album and their first and third. Hopefully you read this and enjoy the music...and lyrics!

Gungor – This Is Not The End Lyrics 12 years ago
Almost all the amazing progressive metal songs I've heard cannot match this one. This is one of the best, most beautiful songs I've ever heard; honestly, it makes me cry every time. I have gone through so much more than would be expected from such a fortunate individual, with so many blessings, a caring family and many opportunities for the future, in 21 years, and it is sometimes incredibly difficult to press onwards toward the destination. Sometimes Jesus just has to carry me there, and if He has to, it shall be done. Someday, I shall open my eyes and never close them again...

Theocracy – The Gift of Music Lyrics 12 years ago
This song touches my heart, as a passionate music enthusiast and Christian alike. The beauty held in music is one of those things that shouldn't have, perhaps even couldn't have, just happened all on its own. Yet God had a specific purpose for creating music for us to enjoy, and as written in the chorus, for us to return to Him someday. I wish I was a better singer right now, but I know I'll enjoy singing songs like this on infinite repeat forever...

Dream Theater – Bridges In The Sky Lyrics 12 years ago
One of the dramatic changes specified by the band as making up the album concept is religious/spiritual change, and this song seems to be the only candidate.

"Death survivor, take me higher,
reunite my soul.
Whisperer of truth, I trust in you
to make me whole."

This seems to clearly reference Jesus. Notice the "Agnus Dei" Gregorian choir in the intro. Petrucci knows what he's doing.

Redemption – The Death of Faith & Reason Lyrics 13 years ago
This song condemns both atheistic and Christian extremists, from a Christian point of view. The Darwinists "wipe out all the wonder of creation" by stating that the universe was not a product of intelligent design, and the Christian extremists believe that they will be the only ones saved, "to hell with all the rest".

BOTH of them are as bad for society as the other, both "create our hell", and both will, at the end of time, be "entitled to the conscience of the King" and face liability for their actions. All that we have to do to solve the battle is wait for that time to come.

Iron Maiden – Starblind Lyrics 13 years ago
Apparently, it's about how none of us will ever know the truth about God while we're on this earth. We're all "deceived" and "starblind" by our own inability to understand everything as mortals.

I don't believe this is anti-religious (the Iron Maiden we all know wouldn't do such a thing), but this has only come after in-depth study - which still is not displaying the true meaning of Starblind. Otherwise, I would have leaped into Amazon and bought the album immediately.

Iron Maiden – Coming Home Lyrics 13 years ago
Bruce Dickinson wrote beautifully pictorial lyrics about landing his aircraft after a long journey through the air, which could be interpreted also as the end of life or retirement - going along with the dual themes of The Final Frontier.

Something that caught my attention was the pre-chorus. The two separate pre-choruses are about the things that can divide humans: religion and country of origin. Though on earth there may be racial and religious tensions, no belief system or place of birth can divide this team of brothers.

Unless Bruce is taking pot-shots at Christianity with his lyrics for this album (unlikely, even on Starblind), this is likely the correct interpretation. Feel free to continue this point, though.

Iron Maiden – When the Wild Wind Blows Lyrics 13 years ago
The grand epic...not really about nuclear fallout, though. It's about hysteria over what seems to be the end of the world.

The British folk melody carries the first third of the song, as the news spreads to every house in this village. When the ground starts shaking - an earthquake, rare in Britain - the townspeople panic, and their reactions range from hiding in their fallout shelters to suicide. Unfortunately for that last couple, the world didn't end...

Basically, it's about something that is all too real in modern society - the sensationalization of disaster. The Deepwater oil spill is the worst in U.S. history, so it gets daily coverage; the seafood business is down a lot more than expected because of the false assumption that ALL Gulf seafood is tainted by oil.

The lyrical twist is a stroke of genius, and truly explains why The Final Frontier takes time to understand. The first listen to this song felt anti-climactic, because the world didn't actually end...but now I understand why it sounded that way. A masterpiece.

About the End Times and the wrath of God. The rich character, like Mr. Money in Pain of Salvation's "BE" album, is a representation of financial greed, immorality, and decadence, which will be destroyed at the End of the World. Compare to Babylon the Great.

The lesson here...no amount of wealth will impress God. Store up treasure in Heaven instead.

Isis – Hand of the Host Lyrics 14 years ago
It is here that vice indulged
bleeds the living of their trust.

Hand of the host
Extended from his fingers,
dangles scented flesh.

Bodies offered, spun from infant minds,
perfect in their empty conception.

To be devoured by my lustful heart,
I am commanded "Do as thou wilt".
Through the halls I am led,
following I am led.
"Writhe and gnaw each other's flesh."

He lies uncovered, this ancient man of bristle and bone.
Hoary and unwashed, his lonely soul fills the room.

Our reverie lays broken on the floor.
Cast him out into the throngs, into unholy laughter.

Meant to say that as a lyrics correction...

It's cold, snowing,
blue light, dusk settles.
A fire burns with failing light
against the growing darkness.

Bending over the dying flames,
you were with me then as always.

Through the fluttering veil of frozen blue,
a hooded figure cuts its path
to cleave the night in two.

Pull its outer husk from its body
and the rest escapes,
and there upon the ground...
the remnants of our struggle.

This is the ghost key.

The great stone walls rise above our heads.
Cold and sad pale light, a dusty veil.
The sun makes its way in destitute.

Weak, you're at my side again
Faithful guide unfailing.
Here we stand among the others,
the living among the dead!

Veins still flowing, full lungs
filled with white light.
Push forward lifeless bodies, swept aside, they are on us.

Cast a net of armor over our heads, hide our life,
lest it be lifted from us.
We must leave this place of deathly decay
Don't look back, press on.

Mortification – Nocturnal Lyrics 14 years ago
This is the band mission statement at this point in time. The lyrics are about how Mortification works behind the scenes, to bring light into the darkest night.

Much of Scrolls of the Megilloth sounds as if it was wandering from place to place, either unable to find a secure location or continuing to repeat the themes that are secure. The production, Steve's vocals and Michael's guitars sound weathered, worn down by the darkness surrounding them. The historical significance of the album in general matches up...that's why it's one of the Christian metal classics.

Mortification – I'm Not Your Commodity Lyrics 14 years ago

Dream Theater – Beyond This Life Lyrics 14 years ago
Dream Theater took a huge chance on this song, which I don't think they will attempt again with their reputation. But considering what Scenes from a Memory had to do...

The lyrical "moral" of Beyond This Life is how one small action can send the course of history spiraling out of control: "Our deeds have traveled far..." Simply ordering an attack on the Cuban missile ships, for example, would have triggered nuclear war!

So, DT simply INTENTIONALLY overplay in the second half of the song to represent the uncontrolled echo that Victoria's murder had throughout the community and through the fabric of time. I hope this clears it with some haters...

Spheric Universe Experience – Tomorrow Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about a man who has premonitions all about the next day during his sleep. Unfortunately, this spoils the experience of living, as he knows everything that will happen tomorrow but is unable to do anything about it. With no further meaning to life, as everything is predictable, the character goes insane.

It hearkens back to a compelling question: what if you could be told exactly how and when you would die, right to the second, but could not stop it?

Theocracy – Bethlehem Lyrics 14 years ago
Full lyrics:

All my life, I've waited and watched through the eyes of faith
To see the consolation of Israel.
And even though the flame of my life is now growing dim,
I know I'll see the Savior of Israel.

For the Spirit of the Lord has promised unto me
that I would not see death before my eyes have seen Him.
The promise is alive, for through this little child,
God's holy light illuminates Jerusalem.

This child will cause the falling and rising of many souls
A sign for all the people of Israel
This child will be the way and the life unto every soul
To every generation shall the Gentiles tell.

For the way has been prepared in the sight of every man
The Son of God Himself is born in Bethlehem.
A sacrifice is made in the temple on this day
Redemption reaches far beyond Jerusalem.

O Bethlehem, your star burns bright tonight,
for my eyes have seen the glory of salvation's holy light
Has this little child come to redeem us all?
To save us from the fall?
Redemption is in sight
Behold, the Son shines bright
under Bethlehem's star tonight.

When all the world was sleeping deep in darkness,
a child in Bethlehem fulfilled the promise.
The ancients prophesied a great deliverer,
the one to break the curse of sin forever.

He didn't come with any worldly fanfare,
no royal treatment, just a dark cross to bear.
In Bethlehem a brand new dawn is rising
A star to guide the way, forever shining.
New hope was born for all creation that night
for though the darkness came the brightest light.

Shadow Gallery – First Light Lyrics 14 years ago
(Continued)

He becomes lost and unsure of his mission as he discovers that there is indeed no life on Mars. Effectively, he gives up entirely, but finds himself continuing with the quest anyway. This makes him come to realize once and for all that there is indeed a God, and that he is guiding this man on his quest out into a new world. The repetition of the "oasis in the sky" lines, with altered wording, makes this obvious.

Renewed in faith, the character (wordlessly) continues his search, and then fades out of known space in the long silence. The fourth part reveals he has indeed found his destination, and the sweet yet sad closing movement takes humanity back to the beginning.

I divide this piece into four movements, as if this story was a Biblical rebirth, a return to Genesis as it were.

Movement I, 0:00 to 9:19: "Fallen"
Movement II, 9:19 to 16:59: "Revelation"
Movement III, 16:59 to 27:18: "Exodus" (Instrumental)
Movement IV, 27:18 to 34:18: "Genesis" (Instrumental)

Conveniently, "Genesis" lasts seven minutes on the dot, which returns back to the religious theme.

"Genesis" is quite simply one of the most beautiful passages in all of music. It might seem familiar (some comment they've heard it in a movie), but when something is so incredibly amazing, who cares?

And finally: Nick Bush is an awfully familiar name. "Nick Bush" wrote Chip's Challenge levels. So did I. It appears that these two people are in fact the same, even...
