Ramona Falls – Russia Lyrics | 10 years ago |
By Jove, I think you've got it. Exhortion's not a word and he definitely wasn't saying exhortation, and all this time I was wondering what the hell he was talking about. I know it's been two years since you posted this, but have a vote up from me. |

Iron & Wine – A History of Lovers Lyrics | 12 years ago |
At first glance, this song seems to be about a jealous guy killing his ex-girlfriend's new lover. However, I don't think it's that simple. So this guy was imploring Louise to stay with him when her new lover knocked on the door. "He came with a razor blade" Her new lover was carrying a weapon. Maybe he took it for self-defense but it makes more sense to me that his intention was to hurt the singer. "Louise came to rescue me, missing the irony Blood made her heart change its beating I hope that she's happy, I'm blamed for the death Of a man she found better than me" This verse is key and shows what really happened. The new lover was beating the hell out of the singer. Louise, upon seeing his blood, tried to intervene and in so doing, managed to kill her new lover. The razor blade mentioned earlier was the murder weapon and they threw it into a river in their attempt to cover up the killing ("bound like us all for the ocean"). When the murder was uncovered, this guy took the blame for it, probably because he was so infatuated with Louise. Even the word "blame" is one that seems to imply innocence, at least to me. Nowhere in the song does he ever admit guilt. |

It reminds me of Personal Jesus, a little bit. |
Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think this is lamenting how idle and weak people today have become. I don't think it's actually about the Spanish Civil War, but simply references it to get the point across, since many people who volunteered to fight back then gave up comfortable lives to do so. 'Bullets for your brain today But we'll forget it all again Monuments put from pen to paper Turns me into a gutless wonder' This is saying how easily past wars become irrelevant. People in countries all over the world have fought against tyranny in many different forms, but once it's all over, we usually just put up a monument or two as a reminder of the sacrifices made and move on. It's little more than lip service, because few of us today would be willing to make the same sacrifices if it were inconvenient for us. 'Gravity keeps my head down Or is it maybe shame At being so young and being so vain' This is saying how the majority of the younger generations today are far too superficial and materialistic. Maybe it's because we're so privileged now, but things like civil rights, freedom, justice, etc. are really not that high on our agendas anymore. 'Holes in your head today But I'm a pacifist I've walked La Ramblas But not with real intent' I guess this is saying that even though you're being shot at and having to dodge bullets, the singer does nothing because he claims to be a pacifist. He's walked La Ramblas as a tourist rather than a fighter. 'And on the street tonight an old man plays With newspaper cuttings of his glory days' Probably about how the older people who fought in past wars are now taken for granted. 'And if you tolerate this Then your children will be next And if you tolerate this Then your children will be next Will be next, will be next, will be next' If we tolerate the bad things that happen around us, which we generally do, our children will be the ones that suffer. |

I love this song, I can see no hope or happiness in it. To me, these are tragic lyrics. |
Mark Ronson – Bang Bang Bang Lyrics | 13 years ago |
If this song really is about consumerism and the government as you chaps have said, I'm sort of disappointed. |
ABBA – Waterloo Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It does actually sound very much like a song about domestic violence. |
Jethro Tull – Aqualung Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think the first and last verses of this song refer to how society generally views this old homeless guy, but the middle part takes a softer approach. |
Simon and Garfunkel – Kathy's Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Whatever partners Kathy had after Paul must have felt pretty inadequate listening to this. |
Opeth – Isolation Years Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To me, this song is about a man who is reading a letter that was meant for a dead friend. I'd say the dead friend left his wife, and went abroad, for whatever reason, and this was her letter to tell him she missed him. "The wound in me is pouring out to rest on a lover's shore" means that she's pouring out the contents of her wounded heart onto the paper. The dead friend was probably far away, on another continent, hence the "lover's shore" part. I'd even go so far as to say that this song could be about a dead soldier. Maybe the wife of this soldier sent him this letter when he was abroad, fighting. She knew he might not return, and he didn't. |
