The Microphones – Antlers Lyrics 13 years ago
Apart from the fact that this is probably the best produced acoustic guitar track I've heard in a long time (listen on headphones), it's just amazing. It's about a reindeer asking a little bird to make its nest in its horns, and travel together forever.

It's such a sweet picture of mutual surrender. It doesn't matter that they're different animals from different worlds, the reindeer just wants to be with the bird. For the bird to be with the reindeer it would have to give up its flight. The reindeer tells it to put its hands up like horns and become like a reindeer. the bird has to put all of its trust in the reindeer.

At the same time, the reindeer would be austracised from the other reindeer, whose social order is largely based on horn size. It also becomes defenceless, meaning it won't be able to defend its territory anymore and would have to spend its life wandering.

To be together, the reindeer and bird both have to give up everything that makes them strong and proud. They have to be completely vulnerable. They have to leave everything they've known to be reborn and walk into winter together. And even if they don't make it. Even if they freeze and die, they will die together. But even after their bodies are gone, the nest and the antlers will always remain together. I really love that image. Just beautiful.

Belle & Sebastian – Ease Your Feet in the Sea Lyrics 14 years ago
I've been a Belle and Sebastian fan for years and this is one of my favourite songs of theirs. For a long time I thought that it was underrated by fans, but I've had a change of heart recently.

I think that what draws people to belle and sebastian's music has never been the hit singles or 'must listen' songs. People are drawn to belle and sebastian because their music is so unassuming. It's brilliant, but never feels like it's trying to grab your attention on purpose. That subtlety is what draws people in. Each B&S song to me feels like walking into a new room and exploring it. It's a really active process and can almost feel like a conversation at times, trying to see how all the pieces fit together. Ultimately, i think that one of Stuart's greatest strengths is that his lyrics tell a story in such a way that you can identify with his characters, but still vague enough to force you to fill in the gaps with your own experience. Perhaps the reason different people identify so strongy with different B&S songs is that that personal 'gap filling' reflects the listener's own life experience and that process, in some circumstances, provides a safe way to subconsciously deal with pain and unresolved emotional issues with through the safety net of superimposing them onto a character in a song. This deep emotional attachment may be why so many fans are so obsessed with this particular band. Neutral Milk Hotel is another example.

My favourite belle and sebastian songs are Ease your feet in the sea, Chickfactor and Don't leave the light on baby. These aren't widely regarded as the 'best' songs in the band's catologue, but they're the ones I identify with most. I'm happy for people to disagree. That's the beauty of this band. Everybody experiences them in their own subjective way.

Neutral Milk Hotel – April 8th Lyrics 14 years ago
To everyone trying to figure out the significance of the date april 8th, i doubt Jeff would base it on something that everybody would know about, like a historical figure or kurt kobain. Jeff's lyrics and symbolism is always intensely personal. My guess is that april 8th is either significant or symbolic in jeff's own mind in a special way which would be impossible to discover unless you actually asked him.

The XX – Crystalised Lyrics 14 years ago
The first thing I thought when I heard this song was 'massive attack'. The xx are definately have more of a pop orientation, but this wouldn't be out of place as a Mezzanine B-side.

ps I agree with NakedRobot's first idea about this song's interpretation.

Kaki King – Life being what it is Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a really great video of her performing live in sydney. (on my 18th birthday as a matter of fact)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDv_3nsboa4&feature=related

The group that made it are called 'Shoot The Player'. They are pretty much an Austrlian version of the La Blogotheque group from Paris who film artists performing live around the city. One take. Ambient noise included. I really like it. She did a few StP videos which are all great.

TV on the Radio – Wolf Like Me Lyrics 15 years ago
Richard Kingsmill (the main music person at Triple J, Australia's biggest alternative radio station. he's pretty much the pope of indie music in Aus) just put Wolf Like Me at #6 in his top 100 songs of all time. Fair call, i reckon. brilliant song.

i love of montreal and the big oil ep, but this is the most annoying song on earth to get stuck in your head for two weeks when you're trying to revise for exams. true story.

of Montreal – Girl from NYC (Named Julia) Lyrics 15 years ago
This song was what got me hooked on oM. It's so sweet and honest and dark, but it still has that sense of ironic existentialist fun. a really good example of elephant 6.

Belle & Sebastian – Nice Day for a Sulk Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song reflects the affect that friends can have on you when you're down. It follows the passage of a day where the speaker starts off pretty depressed, bumming around some bar or caf with a mate and trying to avoid people (nice day for a sulk/the girl smells of milk). He starts perking up as more of the close friends come over and in the end they decide to have a jam, drink too much down by the river on a summer's evening and laugh at Bobby when he falls in the lake. Just a nice song. 'fold your hands' is a really underrated album imo.

Belle & Sebastian – Don't Leave the Light On Baby Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of my favourite B&S songs off what i reckon is their most underrated album. One of the things I love about Belle and Sebastian is their ability to make everyday events seem so beautiful and pogniant.

Another friend, the one I love
Turns to me, "Have you seen enough?"
"Let's hang about
There's nothing like a sunset"
It's been a bloody stupid day
Don't leave the light on baby

anyway, brilliant song from a brilliant band.
