Seven Mary Three – Cumbersome Lyrics 8 years ago
Haven't listened to this song for... I don't even want to think about how long it's been.

Where he says "I'd like to believe this nervousness will pass" makes me think of one of those relationships, where you basically feel like the other person is staying with you out of obligation, and you feel that tension in their tone, the brittleness of their mood. The feeling that every little thing you do or say is another nail in the coffin. The nervousness like they're just looking for a way out, a reason to dump you.

You hope the nervousness will pass. You hope it's just a bad mood, or a rough patch in life. Sometimes it is, and things getter... But sometimes... well, the rest of the song has that down too :(

Dream Theater – Never Enough Lyrics 14 years ago
The meaning of the song is rather obvious. And from what I've read on forums, some of DT's fans are very polarized and borderline savage in their criticism. As jk_addict said way back at the top, a lot of DT's longtime fans are ticked that they go into heavier territory, while others aren't satisfied unless they have the heavier stuff, and ignore all of it.

It's the sort of thing that happens with groups that are as musically diverse as DT. They have a different sound with just about every album, so each one picks up a different set of fans. Some of them will go to DT's previous stuff and find new things they like, and others will say "Well, this isn't like [name of favorite DT album] so it's crap."

The thing is, just to take the music for what it is. While Images and Words and Awake are two favorite albums, I like the fact that their subsequent albumns are different. It's what makes them fresh and vital, and keeps them from just recycling the same sound over and over like the majority of mainstream groups do. Just my $0.02.

Dream Theater – The Dark Eternal Night Lyrics 14 years ago
As someone else said, this is based off of Nyarlathotep by H. P. Lovecraft. It was one of the few Lovecraft stories I had not read. Then a few weeks ago, while doing laundry, I found one a Lovecraft Short story anthology on the "leave a book or magazine here" rack. The similarities were there almost right off the bat.

Asian Kung-Fu Generation – Blackout Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of my favorite AKFG songs. I saw a subtitled video on Youtube once with a translation of the lyrics. It was very akin to the mood of the music, but I forgot most of them. The gist was very fatalistic and resigned with a sort of upbeatness. For better or worse, life goes on relentlessly.

Dream Theater – Beyond This Life Lyrics 14 years ago
I like the almost Freddy-Mercury level tenor LaBrie pulls off on this song. Plus, the last refrain of "our deeds have traveled fa-aaar" had me making rock horns (which makes driving very awkward.) Simply brilliant.

Dream Theater – The Spirit Carries On Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is really awesome, despite some little split-hair issues (the broadwayish intro, the over the top choir toward the end, etc.) Awesome guitar solos in here that lend themselves to those quiet contemplative moments driving down a winding road.

Or those moments in gridlocked traffic where you're quietly contemplating smashing the front end of your car into the jack-hole in front of you.

Dream Theater – Learning to Live Lyrics 15 years ago
The AIDS interpretation makes perfect sense. But like many of Dream Theater's songs, it works on many levels.
A theory:
Perhaps the tie in with "Wait for Sleep?" has to do with a breakup between the woman and her lover (I would assume a boyfriend.) Perhaps one of them realizes they have AIDs and feel the need to break things off. Perhaps the woman in Wait for Sleep finds out that the man has AIDs, and overcome by fear, and breaks things off. Perhaps the woman is ALSO the subject of Learning to Live (unlike Wait for Sleep, LTL is gender-neutral.) Or maybe they have nothing to do with each other. Beats the heck out of me, but speculating on song meanings makes traffic so much more bearable.

Dream Theater – 6:00 Lyrics 15 years ago
I know this song was probably/possibly written about Kevin Moore and his creative differences with the band, but my interpretation when I first heard it was this:

A guy, probably getting on in his years, realizes some sort of talent, but feels trapped by the day-to-day business of working life. He becomes torn to the extent where he can't even get out of his car to go to work. He realizes that his time is short, and he has to act now.

As someone else mentioned, the voice samples are from James Joyce. As much as I LOVE Jordan Rudess's work, I miss Moore's use of voice samples.

Dream Theater – In the Presence of Enemies Pt.1 Lyrics 15 years ago
Well, the bulk of the lyrical content comes from a Korean comic (manhwa) called "Priest." Part 1 is mostly the first half of volume one, where we learn of Ivan Isaacs, a priest who falls in love with a woman. The two of them are sentenced to execution by the Church (which is being misled by a fallen angel.) In the final moments of his life, he strikes a deal with another Demon who seeks revenge on the Church. If you doubt this, take a stop into your local Borders, Barnes and Noble, or better yet, Independently Owned Comic Shop with a decent selection of Manga and Manhwa. Find Priest, Volume 1 and read the back cover and the first few pages. It's right there. Plus, I read somewhere that Petrucci admitted to it, which is pretty cool of him, as opposed to other songwriters who might act dodgy about such things.

Some snobbish types out there might call it plagiarism, but I just call it awesome :D I like it when musicians take inspiration from fiction (a la Rime of the Ancient Mariner.) If a prog metal or power metal group did a song based on Berserk! (a Japanese series,) I think my head would explode (and happily so.)
