The Rolling Stones – Jig-Saw Puzzle Lyrics 6 years ago
This song written 50 years ago...can still fit in with todays society.
Its about the hypocrisy of people and everyday life....and someone trying to figure out the puzzle to it all, while avoiding all the outside conflict..I could go into depth with each verse...but will leave that to your imagination...just laying out the foundation here. :) With the last verse, this person finally finds someone that agrees with them...and so here are the two of them staying sheltered and away from all the outside BS figuring out how to solve it.

Picture it today with all the Pro Trump anti Trump people....Pro Immigration anti immigration, pro border anti border, etc. etc.Fuck it...here I am staying to myself just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle.......and I found my woman to help me with it. :)

Mentholated, not Methylated

Some cigarettes used to be treated with MENTHOL [CH3C6H9(C3H7)OH], also known as "peppermint camphor," a white, crystalline, organic compound obtained from peppermint oil which acts as a mild anesthetic.

Mentholated Sandwich...picture a brown filtered cigarette butt squished between someones teeth....resembles a sandwich..the brown outside...the white filter inside. Thats how I always pictured it. ;)

FUCKING LOVE. So much confusion when in that in between period of....maybe it can still work, but then again there's no way in hell this is going to work.
Neil portrays that perfectly in this song.
Just had this song roll repeatedly through my head this past weekend while out camping at the Delaware Water Gap (PA/NJ) Siting at river edge, alone....water flowing, birds singing, soft breeze........doubts of relationship...where its headed.....thoughts of just sitting there forever.............
damn, wish I could of had Neil's talent!

@[fifteenfathomsdown:18389] great analogy you made here :)
Only that I think the "shut up your saturating me" part refers to that craving, inner thought/voice, whatever you want to call it, knowing you shouldn't do it again but do so anyways. It gets to a point that's the one and only thought you have (you're saturating me)
Rock on! \m/ \m/

Tool – Hooker with a Penis Lyrics 10 years ago
It refers to a fan who accused the band of going soft, or selling out after releasing 1992's Opiate. Maynard responds to the fan by pointing out the hypocrisy of such a statement, noting anyone who listens to bands and buys music is a sellout themselves and that everything you "read and wear and hear and see on TV is a product". "OGT" is taken to stand for "Original Gangster Tool"

Keenan whispers in the left channel throughout the song. At 1:41, "consume, be fruitful, and multiply" may be alluding to Genesis, which contains the phrase "be fruitful and multiply" six times.

Black Sabbath – The Writ Lyrics 10 years ago
Just a little fact about the "hidden track" at the end of this song. For those that don't know...
Some versions of Sabotage contain a short hidden track entitled "Blow on a Jug" at the end of "The Writ", recorded at very low volume.

Being upstaged in a highly unexpected manner reportedly inspired Black Sabbath‘s oddball (and mercifully brief) hidden track ‘Blow on a Jug,’ which can be found at the end of the song ‘The Writ’ on their 1975 album ‘Sabotage.’
According to black-sabbath.com, lead singer Ozzy Osbourne was perplexed when at a 1970 festival Free, Traffic and Sabbath were all outshined by none other than Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime‘ fame, who yes, featured a jug player. “He was playing f—ing jugs and he stole the day! So it just shows you it doesn’t matter what anybody thinks…after Mungo Jerry we didn’t have a hope. Blowing on f–ing jugs!”

Everclear – Fire Maple Song Lyrics 10 years ago
The song doesn't need an interpretation as the lyrics are very moving w/o one.

I take it the one who died was a girl from his pre-teen years...his puppy love. They had a very memorable summer together. Over time they drifted apart and kept in touch rarely.

All those memories of that summer come back to him as he reads a letter telling him that this girl had died....dwelling up all sorts of emotions.

Now those thoughts that once brought him happiness, will only hurt now, and no longer bring a smile as they once did.

At the Drive-In – One Armed Scissor Lyrics 10 years ago
Just tossing this out there for the hell of it.
Could this possibly be based off the going on's inside the mind of a "cutter"?

For those unaware, the definition of a cutter is: One who cuts themselves to relieve themselves from an emotional pain.
Cutting is not something one advertises, and when someone does cut they are generally ashamed and hide it as well as they can.
Can be done with any sharp object, such as, but not limited to, knives, razors, broken glass, broken cd's, scissors, and safety pins.

Nope. I thought the same thing. Then I came here and saw written above, Ambrose158 comments "and I heard that the band
sometimes will play movies on mute and then try to create
music that captures the mood of the movie."

But of course the other interpretations posted here are also intriguing. Thats what makes this, awesome lyric writing!

Being a recovering alcoholic (6+ years sober now) I often found myself coming back to listen to this song for a morale boost. One of the main keys to sobriety is confronting your inner demons..your past mistakes, etc. Accepting them, putting them behind you, and continue on moving forward in life. Pretty much what I believe the lyrics cover pretty well..

We both want
To rape you.

With that line alone, Maynard isn't only focusing on religion in this song, just using it as a foundation for the song in general. It's basically making fun of those that become followers throughout life and don't think for themselves for the most part.

*"think for yourself, question authority, strive to be different, strive to be unique, Never repeat things other people say"

Tool – Opiate Lyrics 11 years ago
This quote is reproduced a great deal and is probably the only Marx quote that most people are familiar with. Unfortunately, if someone is familiar with it they are likely only familiar with a small portion that, taken by itself, tends to give a distorted impression of what Marx had to say about religion.

Karl Marx on Religion
Is Religion the Opiate of the Masses?

Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions.

Karl Marx, Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right

Hense what the song is based upon.....

Story has it that the lyrics are from a dream Jack Douglas had at the Cenacle... Steven was too f**ked up, didn't have any lyrics, so he just used what Jack had written. I don't recall having seen Jack elaborate on it anywhere else... so take that for what it's worth I guess.
The Cenacle is where they recorded Draw the Line...during the worst days of their drugdom. ;)

Sorry to hear that your father never came back to the family, or more so you. Maybe to him the idea of getting involved with anything in his past gives him a too strong of an urge to pick up. But IMHO that is something that needs to be worked on with ones self if you want to live life fully and normally but w.o alcohol.
He also still may feel embarrassed and ashamed of how he treated you in your younger years.
A tough and touchy situation, but wish you luck! Maybe one day you two will be talking.

Awesome song about seeing with and struggleing with alcohol its addiction and temptation.
This is from a recovering addict/alcoholic of 26 years,(now 6 years sober as of 5/15/12) that has a long history of alcoholism on both sides of my family.
Only I was too stupid to see myself falling into the abyss when I was younger.
This song at least shows the awareness, of the dangers picking up that drink, knowing his past family history, and from what hes lived.
So for you younger ones that think its kewl to drink every day/night...careful, especially if alcoholism runs in the family, coz before ya know it, you find yourself waking up NEEDING a drink to just get your day started.
I remember saying to myself.....nope not me........
Flip on the tele..wrestle with Jimmy....the idea of doing things...anything to keep his mind off of going to the fridge and grabbing that drink.
The only thing an alkie thinks about is having that next drink. Fuck the problems....grab another drink.

I'm surprised that know one has said that this song is about the FEELING that you get while driving and you have some a-hole driving in front of you. It doesn't mean you necessarily act out on it though..sheesh

I get this feeling quite often, having to deal with New Jersey drivers!

I have to admit that I do have the bad habit of riding on someones ass 2 inches away after getting cut off though. :P

Nirvana – Polly Lyrics 12 years ago
After hearing this song Bob Dylan was prompted to remark of Cobain, "That kid has heart."

There's a point in the song where Cobain sings only "Polly says..." before pausing and starting over. This was a mistake in the studio that the band as well as the recording team liked, and left on the album. As evidenced in live performances, the mistake was "written in" to the song.

I love the slide guitar in this song especially after the second "I should have stayed in bed" verse, where its really pronounced.

Its reminds of desperately trying, trying, trying, only to have everything come crashing down on you while still struggling. Desperately hoping for things to come out good...only to fail again.

The music fits so well with the lyrics in this song.
Video is awesome also!

Soundgarden – Pretty Noose Lyrics 12 years ago
According to Cornell, "Pretty Noose" is about "an attractively packaged bad idea...something that seems great at first and then comes back to bite you."

Frank Kozik, the director of the song's music video, interpreted the song as "your average bad-girlfriend experience," an interpretation which Cornell agreed with.

Copied from (http://www.myspace.com/notrendmusic)

Their first release was a 7". "Teen Love," which covered the entirety of side B at 33 RPM, actually became a college hit. One of the most interesting songs ever written, it pairs a pensive, slightly melancholy melody with No Trend's definitive statement of their view of society: A teen couple are reduced to robotic machines, slaves to current trends and societal expectations, their humanity gutted by the emotionless vocal.

Neil Young – Fuckin' Up Lyrics 12 years ago
It's how you look, and how you feel
You must have a heart of steel

Can picture a disheveled drifter w/o a care in the world for anyone except his own survival, angry at the world, hence needing a heart of steel to not have any compassion for anyone or anything except himself.

I can see you on a hill
Comatose but walking still
Curves beneath your flowing gown
Only I could bring you down

Getting someone hooked/addicted into drug use that led a clean life before, "curves beneath your flowing gown".

Dogs that lick and dogs that bite
Hounds that howl through the night

Possible comparison to relationships with other women/people in the past?

Broken leashes are all over the floor
Keys left hanging in a swinging door.

Never able, or not wanting to, keep a lasting relationship of any kind....."broken leashes", keys left behind never planning to return.
