Rush – Cold Fire Lyrics 12 years ago
To me, this song is about the dichotomy between a fairytale concept of love (fire), and one that primarily centers around logic and reason (cold). In this instance, it certainly seems that the male is very traditional and idealistic in terms of how love should be, and the female is more modern and realistic about how she wants to be treated.

Additionally, I think the song chronicles the time line of a marriage from beginning to end. In the line, “The phosphorescent wave on a tropical sea,” I picture that being a honeymoon. “The pattern of moonlight on the bedroom floor” reminds me of laying in bed after passionate lovemaking. “The flame at the heart of a pawnbroker's diamond,” leads me to believe that their marriage is failing, and the woman hocked her ring. And finally, “The look in your eyes as you head for the door,” marks the end of the marriage.

It also seems apparent that “cold fire” is used to describe someone who is angry to the point of indifference or emotional withdrawal from a relationship; or perhaps passive-aggressiveness.

Team Sleep – Our Ride To The Rectory Lyrics 13 years ago
I feel like this song might be about insanity, or at least a battle with it... "crashes in your heart," "struggle under quake." Specifically, I think this song is about a patient in a mental hospital. "Clip the patient on the wing feather" could be a metaphor for someone who is being heavily mediated and therefore not their true self (unable to fly). "The pain stop and the tearing through" could allude to mental anguish and the desire to make progress through therapy. "Froze in a block" reminds me of a mental block, or a repression of memories, a result of the medication. It can also refer to a prison block... "As you watch from outside." "Fit in a standard size" alludes to trying to make the patient just like every other "normal" person. That's just my interpretation. Whatever it's about, it's simply a fantastic song!

Mastodon – Ghost of Karelia Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is deliciously cryptic. The first clue we are given in this song is the odd number of eyes. This leads me to believe that mythological Buddhist or Hindu gods are being referenced. Many gods are portrayed as having a third eye, a universal symbol for a higher state of consciousness (3 higher beings = nine eyes, 1 higher being + 3 lesser beings = 9 eyes). Going further with the Hindu/Buddhist interpretation, a skull filled with blood is symbolic for the renunciation or removal of life, an element of Yama. He is a wrathful god of the dead, who is sometimes depicted as having red eyes, and a bull-head. He is also thought to have a twin sister, Yami. Upon death, individuals are sent to Yama to be judged based on their life’s actions (karma). After Yama’s judgment, the individual will either go through a period between heaven and earth, or will go through punishment in hell, before they are returned to Earth and given new bodies (reincarnation). I believe this song marks the individual’s transitional period; a journey through the ethereal plane in cyclical attempt to return to life. The lyrics of this song imply neither a pleasant or unpleasant experience, but one of tediousness and emptiness. He floats, unable to orient himself through humanly concepts such as time and space. He is trapped in a seemingly endless void. It is during this period that Yama’s judgment is being made. Ultimately, the person is decided unworthy for heaven, and begins the downward spiral toward hell.
