Madonna – Swim Lyrics 15 years ago
I realize I am not about to leave a comment deconstructing the lyrics, but.....
I think this entire album was completely underrated. I liked that Madonna branched out and got a little more soul on this record. That said, this is one of the better songs on the album. I could listen to this for hours on repeat. Amazing.

Strays Don't Sleep – For Blue Skies Lyrics 15 years ago
To me this song always seemed to be about being in a relationship with someone (whether it's a friend, family member or a romantic relationship) who has a problem with drugs. You want so desperately to save this person from their addiction. It has taken everything from the person you love, and has made them someone else. You want so badly to save them, but you know deep down that they had to go down this horrible road. This person finally calls for help, and they are ashamed of what they have done. All this person needs is forgiveness, and that can be incredibly hard to give to yourself, especially when there is an addiction involved. If you've never been close to someone who has an addiction, then you know this.

Anyway....that's what I always thought.

Michelle Featherstone – Back Of The Church Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the lyrics speak for themselves. Loving someone, and sacrificing your happiness so that they can be with the person they love. This song is pure love in the saddest way.

Don Henley – Taking You Home Lyrics 15 years ago
I never thought of this song about being in the context of the birth of a child, but now that you mention it, I can totally see it. I always thought it was about finding the right relationship, and the person you were meant to share your life with. But I can definitely see how it could be about a baby too. Either way, it's a beautiful song.

O.A.R. – Love and Memories Lyrics 15 years ago
There are a lot of comments about O.A.R. being too commerical with this song, but isn't one of the many points in recording albums to SELL those albums? I personally like this song. I'd never heard of O.A.R. BEFORE this song was released, and now I'm a fan. I got hooked because of this song, and I stuck around to hear what else they had to offer. So for me, releasing this song was a good move. I might not have heard of them otherwise. Besides, for the most part, radio sucks. It's the same crap all day long. But every once in a while a good band comes along as a result of that "crap". For me, O.A.R. was one of those bands, and I'm happy they did.

Story of the Year – Until The Day I Die Lyrics 15 years ago
I never thought of this song in the context of a dating relationship. To me, it was always about friendship and the mistakes people can make to ruin a friendship. I also think it's about loyalty, forgiveness and how easy it can be love someone so much that you hate them sometimes. I think it's about how there's always seems to be that one person in your life who can make you crazy angry, and say and do all sorts of things to make you hate them, but in the end, you'll always be friends because your life just wouldn't be the same without that person in it. The song might be unoriginal, but it's definitely relatable.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't know if it's their best song from a lyrical standpoint. My personal favorite is "Ten Years Gone". Lyrically, that is the far better song. I don't really know what this song means, and I agree that if the band doesn't even know (whether that's true, or they just won't say), then I'm not even going to try and decipher it.

Hands down best part of the song? The guitar solo. As far as I'm concerned, the rest of the song was a build up to those precious seconds, because it is amazing.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple Man Lyrics 15 years ago
Shinedown's version was the one I heard first. When I found out that it was a cover, I went hunting for the original. Ever since, I'm not such a fan of the Shinedown version. Why go for a copy when you can have the real thing? lol

I guess I just believe it more coming from the original artists.

Tyler Hilton – Missing You (cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
When I first heard this song, I didn't want to like it on principal. I am generally not a fan of covers. However, Tyler made this song his own, so I can respect that. There is definitely so much emotion in his voice that lets you know that lets you know what this song is really about: trying to convince yourself you don't miss someone, when you obviously do.

And I agree with xkat92x that this song totally reminds me of one of the best montages ever played on OTH. Best. Blackout. Ever.

Stone Temple Pilots – Sex Type Thing Lyrics 15 years ago
I feel like such a geek right now! My brain never went all the way to rape on this one. I always just thought it was an over-confident guy in at a club/bar/party who sees this woman he's attracted to, but she keeps shooting him down. He's throwing line after line at her, and nothing he's saying is working. Maybe she's flirting back a little, but ultimately, he knows she's not going home with him, and that frustrates him to no end. I never really put the lyrics in a more sinister context than that, but now that it's been mentioned, I totally see it. I can't believe it has escaped me for so long!

The Honorary Title – Stay Away Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with most of what has been said already. However, there's a part of me that thinks maybe one person might be less emotionally invested, but he/she isn't quite over the physical aspect of the relationship (You're using me. Do it slowly."), and doesn't really want that part to end. Just a thought...

Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of those songs that totally brings back memories of old friends and classmates. I was in junior high when this song came out, and EVERYONE knew it. It was all over the radio, and everyone I knew memorized the lyrics. To this day, it's not possible to hear this song and not sing along at the top of your lungs. Regardless of what it might or might not be about, it will always have a special place in my heart.

Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics 15 years ago
"Less concerned about fitting into the world. Your world, that is." Absolutely brilliant. It is my favorite line in the whole song. I have totally felt that way about people in my life.

The great thing about this song is that it can be applied to so many different things in life. I tend to think it's absolutely about relationships. Whether it's about your relationship with another person (whether it's a significant other or a friend), a drug, or God, it's about finally realizing that whatever that thing or person is, it's not at all what you thought it was. You lose yourself in that relationship, and become what you think you need to be in order to stay in that relationship. But then one day you wake up and realize that it was all in your head, and that person or thing isn't at all what you thought it was. Nor do you need that person or thing nearly as much as you thought you did. I kind of see it as a letter to yourself. Kind of like a kick in the ass for being fool enough to get lost in someone/something else's world.

INXS – Never Tear Us Apart Lyrics 15 years ago
I kind of think this song eludes to the way the universe steps in, and puts two people together who aren't expecting to find each other. In a second you can find someone that for whatever reason, you are instantly drawn to, and in love with. There's just that look that passes between you, and know you are destined to mean more to each other than just some passing attraction.

I also think it speaks to the bonds that form between people that outsiders may not always understand. Love doesn't always make sense. You see these couples that are so happy and in love, and you wonder, "How the hell did that happen?" because they just don't look right together. I think this might be one of those situations. People may not get it, but it doesn't matter because from the second these two people laid eyes on each other, they were hooked.

West Indian Girl – What Are You Afraid Of Lyrics 15 years ago
What I love about this song is the duality of it. There is obviously a strong emotional tie between two people. The guy, in particular, is lost inside of the other person (who I am going to assume is a girl). He only knows how to identify himself through her. She has invaded him on every way she possibly could, and he feels like their lives are hopelessly entwined. Yet, they are also separated for one reason or another. Whether he chose to leave her, or she chose to leave him, is not clear, but I don't think that's the point. I'd like to think that SHE left HIM, and in doing so, she left him wondering who he is when he's on his own. How does a person stand on their own two feet when they have been relying on the support of another for so long? I think it bothers this man that he feels so strongly about this woman. He feels deserted, confused, alone and heartbroken. He doesn't want anyone to see his pain, but I think when someone is feeling that low, it's impossible not to see it written all over their face. It's in the way they walk, and most definitely, in their eyes. Everyone about a person's demeanor changes when they are nursing a broken heart, no matter how hard they try to hide it.

The song also suggests that the separation may have been a lengthy one, and in that time, feelings began to change. He started to get over her, but is afraid of losing that connection or love, that has meant so much to him for so long. The fact that there is a female voice that sings the questions on the chorus suggest to me that the woman in this song wants the man she once loved to move on with his life.

I think he takes one last chance on this woman, hoping to get back what they once had. He realizes that she has most definitely moved on with her life, and has found something else in life to take his place. She has freed herself of him, and is confused as to why he hasn't let her go. He isn't sure why he can't let her go, and even though time has passed, he's still holding out for her. He's still hoping that he'll get her back. Even if there isn't a chance in hell he's going to get what he wants.

I love the sadness in this song. There is almost an aching to it, from my perspective. There is a desperation to it, but it isn't hopeless. "What are you dying for? To be free." If it weren't for those lines, the hope would be gone. Those lines show that this man is not without redemption or reproach. He can rise above the pain he's feeling, and find someone else to love as much as he has loved this woman. But I think when you love someone as deeply as he loved this girl, there will always be a part of him that lives for her. And as long as it isn't in th forefront of your mind, I think that's okay. It's when you devote your entire life to someone who doesn't feel the same way as you that it's a problem.

This is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time.
