Thanks for the warning on your analysis .. I'm sure that's what the song is REALLY about. (hope you sensed a wee bit of sarcasm.) I think everyone has a different take on the song, equally valuable and unique, but I think that what makes the song so amazing. It's open to so many different interpretations. I respect yours too, but I think taking it as FACT and saying "this one was easy" is very silly of you.. Bob Dylan is a lyrical genius and his songs will never be "easy" to interpret because there is no literal translation! :) |

I don't know why, but I hate this version compared to that of the Postal Service.
And how I hate to use the word hate!
Even more so when describing Iron & Wine, but I feel like they lost something in the cover. I tried to see the perspective of the songs being in two totally different categories, but inexplicably I always have to hit next when it comes on my shuffle. |

how can you judge whether or not some "little teenage girl" likes a beautiful song like this for the right or wrong reasons? she may like it because it's in the movie, or she may like it because of something deeper. regardless how long you've been a fan, i think that true iron & wine/ Sam Beam fans should be glad that instead of some talentless pop band faux-jamming along in what is perhaps the most romantic part of the movie, someone with true talent and heart was featured in the scene. someone as amazing as Sam Beam deserves the recognition.

Straying away from the literal meaning of the song, when I hear this song I always imagine my house in the summer when I was a kid. I'd run around the neighborhood and pull fragile flowers from the dirt and wait for the ice cream truck with quarters, while my mom was alone, in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning the house. I have visions, looking back, of the coming into the kitchen to see the room lit up with sunlight, the smell of dinner and my mom looking ethereal and beautiful in her summer dresses. It's a bittersweet memory and every time I listen to this song it brings me back. |

well to ME, this song always seemed like it was mocking the too-common "mrs. robinsons" who hide behind the bible and live a cookie-cutter lifestyle, shielding what goes on behind closed doors. as for the joe dimaggio stanza, i think its referring to the elderly who feel like the world's going to shit and seem to wonder where all the "wholesome" figures have gone. |

I don't really think thing song has any really deep meaning, compared to songs that are ambiguous and open to interpretation. I agree that it's probably about a guy (the singer) eager to convince a girl that although that the "other guy's" superficies may be more appealing, he's the one she could be comfortable with. I don't think the meaning is what makes this song.. it's because its so catchy and bubbly and happpy :) |
