Baroness – Collapse Lyrics 10 years ago
Sounds to me this is about society and our world, and possibly NWO content. How we've succumbed or been numbed to evil and it's all going down the toilet. When something bad happens we turn our heads, no more apparent in the line:

Like the bullet shell
Whistle and then I'll hum
Watch the good folks run

Basically watching good people being shot by military forces, then turning you're head and "whistle" and "hum" instead of standing up for the injustice that's happening.

To me this song is about embracing the aspects of spirituality that resonate with you, whether it's your own intuition or parts of belief systems already in place. I think he's basically saying, whatever you believe, as long as your intention is pure, moving towards positivity, and unselfish, you are "Right On". And he goes to mention the different religious concepts that express that to him. Krishna in Hinduism, Mark in Christianity, Yod He Vau He Om in... Hebrew?? Basically he's saying it's all the same if you have the right connection and intention.

I don't really see this is being about Soundgarden coming back. Seems more based on the life of a soldier in the military.

Richard Marx – Hazard Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree with Jayrod, I think he killed her. I remember seeing this video when I was pretty young, and I thought the same thing then too. Though there's plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise as well, based on the video + lyrics. But I'll make a case for him being the killer.

It shows him setting fire to his house after seeing his mother having an affair. So right there, he has a very intense reaction to infidelity. I don't think he meant to kill her (if the fire in fact did), but it was still a very extreme reaction, and I think the "prejudiced eyes" are him thinking they don't understand him, and his reaction to what happened and why, or he is just in denial or repressing what happened.

And that's happening while he catches Mary with the guy in the car. I'm not certain whether or not they had or were dating. I know he denies it in the interrogation, but who knows, maybe he was just saying that because he was hurt by what happened. I just find it weird them getting all cuddly and touching hands that there wasn't some sort of physical relationship at some point.

So I think he sees it happen, runs off. Then comes back with the same reaction he had when he saw his mother with the guy. Mary looks eerily similar to his mother so I feel like history repeats. Someone mentioned that she looks "terrified" when she sees the mystery person approaching, but I don't think that, I think she looks more shameful or sad, like she sees Richard.

Anyways, the lyrics section with "I swear I left her safe and sound" are a bit fishy to me. It seems not sarcastic, but more like he killed her and has an alternative view on what he did, and she was "sleeping" safe and sound after he killed her and let left her at the river. Just something about that line I can't think that he was telling the apparent truth, but a metaphorical one after he had killed her.

I just think it's almost a state of shock or dark repressed side of him coming out, that makes him do intense things in reaction to infidelity. And he can carry on in life in denial that he had done anything wrong and that he's just "an outsider".

Either way, great video + song.

Soundgarden – Tighter & Tighter Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with the very first post. Suicide or leaving someone you love, which can be like suicide (no pun intended) of your soul. I don't care to dissect all the lines, but some of my favorite lines are:

"Lost my grip, fell too far to start again"
I know exactly how this feels. Basically saying that life has taken it's toll and knocked you down and you don't want to get back up anymore.

"A sudden snake, found my shape and tells the world
Remember this, remember everything is just black or burning sun"
I feel like this line is saying, when the shit went down, it exposed who I really am, which is someone who doesn't want to live.

This song defines just how versatile and brilliant Soundgarden was. This is certainly one of the hidden gems, not just from Down on the Upside but all SG tunes.

A Perfect Circle – Brena Lyrics 14 years ago
According to the guitar tablature book the 1st chorus is "mourn her own" and the 2nd is "vulnerable". Not like that makes a huge difference or anything, but he's definitely saying an "m" word in the first chorus if you listen closely, and an "n" at the end of own.

Either way, this is a very beautiful song and full of love/pain... they often go hand in hand.

Soundgarden – Never the Machine Forever Lyrics 14 years ago
I feel like "the machine" is sort of the system of modern day living and capitalism. The narrator struggles with being a part of it, and doesn't like being part of it, but is so dependent in the current lifestyle that it's hard to see through the gray area of living your life how you want to live it, but at the same time being influenced by society and modern day, industrialized living.

The only reason I interpreted it that way, is that I feel the same. There are so many things that drive me nuts and I hate about our society and the corporate mentality, yet there are so many things within that system I am dependent on because I've been influenced and accustomed to it over time. At the same time, that system, or "machine" can't live without people living like that, or something :)

Ashes Divide – The Stone Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty sure Dragon19's lyrics are correct, except I always thought it's "We survived what we can't change", I could be wrong though. So I'll base my interpretation off of those...

To me this is a break-up song about trying to let go of the anger & frustration of the relationship's demise. But they are unable to truly do so because of the repression of those feelings, because they falsely act "content" in everyday life. There's some cool interviews on YouTube with Billy ("An Introduction to Ashes Divide") briefly describing each tune, and he mentions that a relationship gone sour was a re-occuring theme in many of the songs on this album, which is pretty evident from most of the lyrics.

I think it's mainly about not dealing with the real feelings you have for someone after a relationship dies, good or bad. And putting on a mask of contentment to deal with everyday life. But then it builds & builds and pushes to "the brink of what can't be endured".

"We survived what we can't change..." They both survived the ending of their relationship, and what cannot be changed (probably harsh words and actions towards each other etc.). So they should just let it go and not dwell on it.

"...We're flowers never breaking through the Stone", is basically saying that they are acting like they are tough and unaffected by the negative aftermath of the break-up, but inside they are really hurting, but won't admit it.

"I pretended and prayed it all away, searching for a place to hide" Billy pretty much saying that he's pretending his life is fine without her, and just hiding out from the truth of the matter.

"But I don't need afflicted memories to fade, I just want to feel something real inside" Perhaps saying that he doesn't care if the tainted memories of the relationship to go away, but since he's been faking his feelings for so long on the outside, he doesn't really know what's real inside anymore or how he actually feels about anything.

The rest is basically repeating those lines in one form or another. But that's what I feel the song is about. Great tune!

Funny, I had always loved this song but thought, man Axl has some really hateful stuff going on. Then I went through a NASTY breakup and now the song pretty much perfectly describes what happened. This is a perfect example of Axl's lyrical genius and I don't think many people realize how awesome he was in this era because they only know GNR for the hits.

"Playful hearts can sometimes be engraged"... ain't that the truth.

Alice in Chains – When the Sun Rose Again Lyrics 14 years ago
Actually that makes a lot of sense, but after reading the lyrics in context with your interpretation I have another take on your meaning for AIC's return being the main theme.

It seems like it could be a song to AIC's more negative fans who say "Duvall sucks, they can't call it AIC without Layne, their just trying to cash in on the name etc etc."

"We all trade in never befores, selling out for the score" Sort of a sarcastic way of saying, yep we're selling out to make money by coming back, it has NOTHING to do with the fact that most of their adult life was spent making music and it's great to be able to play Chains stuff again.

"Hate wearing thin, negative all you've been"
Basically talking about the fans who no matter how good or bad the new music would be, would just hate it no matter what because of their prejudiced negativity towards it not being able to be like the original AIC.

"It seems you prophesized all of this would end, where you burned away when the sun rose again?"
Basically that everyone thought AIC was dead and would end without Layne. Then when they brought the band up, where the fans "burned away" or basically disowning new AIC when they came back.

Either way, still my favorite tune on the album!

Alice in Chains – When the Sun Rose Again Lyrics 14 years ago
Like many of these songs, it "could" be about layne, but I'm going to try to avoid those interpretations...

I think this could be about a friend who went to jail, who was leading a riskier lifestyle, maybe a drug dealer of sorts, or just a person who trys to find the quick fix/solution for everything.

"Selling out for the score" just trying to get ahead financially by selling drugs and whatnot
"Cry it's not my fault" basically you can't blame anyone but yourself when you are arrested
"it seems you prophesized..." basically it's a risky venture and usually ends up in failure

and perhaps when the sun rose up again is when he got out of jail, and after being so tainted by incarceration, normal life is forever tainted or "burning" him.

Just my take, but it's definitely my favorite track on the album. I loved it instantly.

Better Than Ezra – In The Blood Lyrics 14 years ago
After rediscovering this song by hearing it on the radio the other day, I downloaded it and checked up on the band and read about their guitar player who committed suicide. It seems to me like this song could be about that.

"It's the way you move your hands" could be about being a guitar player and how he moves his hands while he plays

"the reason that I'm asking" asking why he would kill himself

"how could you throw away..." obviously, how could you kill yourself and throw away everything (guitar and music) that he lived for.

"the way you shake and sway..." the way he moved on stage while playing and the passion he played with

"too many lost...face the pain..." too many people have killed themselves and it could end if they faced the pain etc.

That's just one interpretation, I always thought it was about a girl who he loved and things went great until she got scared and threw away the relationship. Of course after going through some intense relationships myself I tend to think all songs are about that : )

Alice in Chains – A Looking in View Lyrics 14 years ago
thats why I said "I doubt thats what this is about"... it was just a thought and I was expanding on what someone else had said. And I didn't even say that all of the songs on the album were going to be about Layne.

And I meant it sounds like AIC, as in it's just them doing their thing...just with a new singer, not trying to recreate something, but be what they are currently. I think you completely misinterpreted everything I said.

Alice in Chains – A Looking in View Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about damaged person who can't express their frustrations so they act out in negative ways, and after living like that so long it's like they are a lost cause.

"Life damaged gives to crime
A run down broke machine
That steals your piece of mind
Before you know it's gone"
That pretty much explains it. You make bad choices and it steals your "piece of mind" or sense, and then finally it's gone forever.

"Hiding in the darkest slumber
Boiling to the surface
Crawling on your skin discomfort
Makes you brake and run and stumble fall"
All the repressed feelings hide, then "boil to the surface" and makes the person act out or "break run stumble fall" etc.

"A looking in view too long on the outside
Desperate plans make sense to the low life"
Basically being on the wrong/negative side of a persons mind or compassion, for too long makes them acting out of desperation seems normal for someone living the "low life", perhaps a drug addicts life or just a depressing life in general.

"It's why you never tell me..."
And all those reasons are why the person never expressed their demons to the narrator (Jerry?).

I almost feel like this song could be about Jerry's frustrations with how Layne's life went into a downward spiral. Who knows, I obviously don't know the situation but perhaps the "lay" sounding like "Layne" as other posted commented would be a subtle hint. I doubt that's what it's about, because the lyric would probably be "never TOLD me" instead. Just a random thought.

Either way, those are my thoughts and I think this song is fucking awesome. It sounds like AIC without trying to be... it just is. The vocal harmonies sound really nice and I think they did an awesome job re-creating the vibe of what AIC has been about without trying to force it or being lame. I can't wait for the album.

oh yea 1 more thing... one of my favorite lines

"All these sentimental halos and these consequential angels
When I'm runnin with the devil don't deliver the fight"

I think this line describes that when he's tempted by the devil all of the positive influences in his life just can't change his course of self destruction or help him steer clear. basically all the good in the world can't "deliver the fight" to save us from the ominous presence and temptation in the current world we live in.

Velvet Revolver – Sucker Train Blues Lyrics 15 years ago
wow a couple of actual discussions about... the lyrics! That's a pretty cool comparison Kcobain. I've always wondered what the hell this song was about. Very strange but awesome lyrics. That's kind of Weilands thing, I've never really been able to find a real solid meaning in most of his lyrics as some of my other favorite singers. But they are always cool regardless.

I had always thought this song was about some sort of relation to religion in the current state of american culture and society and how weilands trials and tribulations fit into his view on them. They seem to describe a distorted view on the way religion is portrayed and how the people who are seen as angels or devils are often times not what they really are perceived to be. I think it also kind of describes how certain people have different perspectives on religion and who are really seen as good/evil in the world and how evil and corruption distorts what is actually good/evil and people religious views and affinities.

"Brain and body melting while there's roaches multiplying
It's the alien infection it's the coming of Christ"

a way of saying that certain events in todays world are seen as 2 different things by groups of people. some might consider one event to be a coming of christ and other might consider it a very negative "alien infection" type of event.

"Brains are frying while the kings and queens are dying
Satan won the race and the miracle mile"

basically stating that evil and corruption has won in the end, and our minds are warped because we are influenced from day one by all the bullshit of media/society etc.

"Don't look at me now
Fell too fast your wings won't hold"

maybe telling a "holier than thou" type person that their self righteous nature won't save them when shit hits the fan.

anyways, thats my view on this one. I think this is one of VR's best songs really... it's like the perfect album intro tune.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is a love song of sorts. It might not even be a real person, just the image of what in Billy's mind would be a perfect woman in the perfect setting. He's in a sort of euphoric state when he thinks of her.

"On a distant shoreline, she waves her arms to me" Like she's a person he hasn't met but is out there waiting/waving to him. And the ocean and the beach is a pretty serene setting for the imagination of where that person is.

"To the fringes gladly, I walk unadored with gods and their creations with filth and disease" This is kind of like saying Billy has dealt with the realities of the destructive nature of humans and he "gladly" walked "unadored" in the sense that he proudly tries to keep himself separate of the standard way of life that contributes to the perils of human existence for which he has been mocked because it is not the norm.

"porcelina, she waits for me there with seashell hissing lullabyes and whispers fathomed deep inside my own hidden thoughts and alibis my secret thoughts come alive" So he has an alternate world in his mind to escape from the current reality that disgusts him. And in that world there's a beautiful woman who understands the deeper hidden parts of his mind and thoughts which is essentially something that would make him feel a soothing release to find someone who truly understands him.

"without a care in this whole world..." basically hes saying that when he's in this euphoric ocean dreamworld thinking of this woman he doesn't really give a shit about the bane of reality that plagues his mind.

anyways, thats my take on it. And the song sure as hell makes me feel like im in a euphoric dreamworld with a beach hottie waiting for me : )

Listen to 4th of July, Drown Me, Jesus Christ Pose, Mailman, Show Me How to Live, Moth, Like a Stone, Hands all over, limo wreck, Blow up the Outside World, those songs are about hardcore shit like the end of the world, death, anti-religion/celebrity, environmental rape, and killing society/the rich. Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics 15 years ago
I think its chris' way of saying that the end of the world would be like the 4th of July to him. 4th of July traditionally is about freedom... and the end of his life, or death to him is freedom from the hypocrisy, sadness, pain etc. of this world. And being "in control" in the fall out is like being dead and now everything is free and clear. "once asleep but now I stand" being asleep meaning being alive as a human in the world but now he can stand (metaphorically obviously) and be free and remember "your sweet everything" perhaps remember the things about the world he lived in that he did enjoy. thats my take anyways...

I agree. I think it's about a person (or cornell) who is really depressed, drinking as a result and killing his relationship at the same time and kind of sarcastically asking for sympathy. I always thought that the last line was "and all the little pigs have god" but I guess I could be wrong.

But yea it is in an alternate tuning that is pretty cool. It's the same tuning of head down and pretty noose. I actually wrote a song in this tuning a while ago. At some point I will bring it to my band and add it to our list. The 2 strings tuned to G is cool because it gives you a doubling or chorus effect whenever you play them with a barre chord. Thats why the chorus of the song kinda sounds like there's a slide guitar playing. Soundgarden was so badass because just about everyone song on this album and superunknown was in an alternate tuning and lots with odd time stuff. Not too mention amazing lyrics like this tune!

I think this could be about a soldier in a war or lifestyle of someone who enjoys violence as their therapy and is a little off their rocker.

The kombucha mushroom people are the "hippies" or whatnot, that do nothing all day but sit around and talk about solving their problems, where as he feels he is doing something. And his anger is solved by killing or violence.

His girl acts up, just kick her in the, well... u know where, and it solves that problem. and when he's "killed everyone" he feels better and just says "fuck you" by way of violence and feels his anger is liberated.

playing russian roulette could mean that he just lives a risky lifestyle and that its a "man sport", meaning its macho and hes a tough guy for doing so.

Dunno, strange but cool lyrics that could be about anything but thats my take.

The Smashing Pumpkins – An Ode to No One (Fuck You) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about breaking up with someone that hurt you in a very profound way, so you hate them and are saying fuck you to them, everything they are/were.

It's also about the rage it instills in you upon the world from the bitterness of that relationship, which you basically say fuck you to the world itself because your so pissed off from that experience.

And I loved Zeitgeist as well, it was a return to straight up rock n roll angst, and I think people wanted to hate it because there's no James or D'arcy.
