No, I dont think thats what Zack meant. I think that the correct lyrics are "i grip the Cannon like fonan" which i think is also referring to a gun. meaning hes tired of the school curriculum and wants to start a revolution. he also passes the shells to his classmates, meaning hes handing them bullets and weapons which means that they can join him in the revolution against the oppressors. the line is probably not meant to be taken literally 100%. hes just saying hes educating his classmates about the truth which should get them angry and want to fight for change. |

Its about how they try to change the world and the way people perceive the world by making these deep radical political songs but the fans don't care, they just want to hear good music that they play on the radio or whatevers popular at the time. They just let the political and sociological message go in one ear and right out the other.
Its also about how their critics criticize their radical political beliefs, by labeling them as anarchists and radicals. But they don't care because they know that they aren't stupid ignorant musicians like alot of punk bands just saying fuck the government, but the critics don't give their intellect enough credit. The critics can make fun of them all they want, but it just goes in one ear and right out the other. |

The song is about the evils of capitalism. Capitalism pins everybody against each other, so we have to compete against one another instead of working together as a society. Capitalism makes even good people do bad things when they get desperate to eat and pay the rent. They are also saying that when people do these things that seem terrible on the surface, like selling drugs and prostitution, when you look deeper its really justifiable. It isn't entirely their fault, the American capitalistic way is also to blame. I would even go as far as to say that he feels like we would be better off in a more socialistic society.
I think the name, Cage the Elephant, refers to the republican party and how we as a society had better stop them from pushing their greedy agenda on all of us. But the Republican party just represents right winged politics which would include Democrats so don't take that too personally. Both parties are equally corrupt and greedy, and we need to cage both the elephant and the jackass or we're gonna continue being poor and resort to crime just to make it in society. |

There were three pigs actually, The first pig, old major, could be Lenin but resembles marx more closley. and then the two main pigs, which i was referring to before, snowball and napolean definitely represent soviet leaders. snowball who i thought was Lenin also seems to represent trotsky after reading it a second time and studying the history of russia in more depth. and napoleon definitely represents stalin. |

Orwell was not an anti-communist, he just doesnt support communism in its extreme form, or in a twisted fascist form with a dictatorship. In 1984 the fascist political party of big brother was INSOC which was English socialism, but that doesnt mean that orwell was agaisnt socialism. He even supported types of socialism, he just recognized that people had to be careful with socialism and not let the government have to much control, regulation, and power which is true for any form of gov. Animal Farm was about communist Russia, but it blamed the terrible situation on fascism disguised as communism. The two pigs represented Stalin and Lenin. The first Pig "Lenin" was a true communist who claimed to rule in the interest but he died and the second pig "Stalin" took over and ruled in the interest of his own fascist objectives. It illustrates that communism failed because of fascists like Stalin not because communism itself is bad. RATM supports left sided gov. and they wouldnt refrence orwell and 1984 on more than one occasion if it was agianst their political beliefs. Dead Prez also made a song about animal farm and they are leftists as well. If orwells novels were anti communist these artists wouldnt reference them in the same way that they do. |

Its as if half of the people commenting on this song never listened to a rage song, or if they did it just so happened to be on MTV. i listend to their first 3 albums for years, this is my favorite band but i never took the time to listen to renagedes except what was played on the radio. its not that i didnt like i, but i never bothered to spend money on the cover c.d. but now that i have an ipod i lisente to the album alot. so the first time i hear it im thinking its just making fun of love songs. then the FIRST TIME the very first time he said for you i instantly knew where they were going with it. i didnt even need to hear the end with him saying not me. everyone who doesnt get it is a huge idiot or just doesnt no anything about rage.im actually laughing at these dumb comments. it has absolutely nothing to do with love, or being an outcast to the rest of the world. The point of this song is saying that with all of the probloms in the world people still convince themselves everything is wonderful and couldnt be better and ignore everyone who is poor starving and oppressed or whatever. but that they see whats going on and to them there is nothing beautiful about it. what comes to mind for me is settle fornothing. if ignorance is bliss then knock the smile off my face. the only way someone can veiw our world as beutiful is to be ignorant to the many probloms. |
