Counting Crows – Another Horsedreamer's Blues Lyrics | 22 years ago |
A prostitute? Huh? I think it's just about a girl with a rotten home life who finds her escape in betting on horse races and taking pills. It may also be Counting Crows's most underrated song. |
Radiohead – Electioneering Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I know no one's reading this, but here I go anyway: This song has some of the coolest lyrics ever: "When I go forwards/You go backwards/And somewhere we will meet." It's a play on words: as the politician "goes forwards" - gains more power - the people "go backwards" - lose control and power - and because the politician is relentlessly electioneering, he will meet each person somewhere along the way. This might be my favorite song on "OK Computer." Genius. |

Ben Folds Five – Alice Childress Lyrics | 22 years ago |
There's an official BFF songbook that explains (not verbatim), "The song has nothing to do with the playwright Alice Childress. It was based on an experience of Ben's friend Anna Goodman, who was working in a hospital. It seems that one day there was a mental patient named Alice Childress who decided to douse Anna with mop water." And yes, I believe Ben just tacked on the name, as the song's not about HER either :) ...Ben has talked about his habit of using unrelated-but-real names for songs that aren't about that person or people. And who has written more "name" songs than Ben Folds? Think "Alice Childress," "Kate," "Steven's Last Night in Town," "Jane," "Annie Waits," "Zak and Sara," "Tom and Mary," "Fred Jones Pt. 2," "The Ascent of Stan," "Losing Lisa," "Eddie Walker," "Emaline"...you get the idea. |
Pete Yorn – A Girl Like You Lyrics | 22 years ago |
This IS a great song, but to make a small clarification: Pete wrote this song after seeing a friend of his who had a major crush on a girl he liked. So there ya go. |
Jimmy Eat World – The Middle Lyrics | 22 years ago |
A few thoughts/responses: On the scheme of people who call themselves "Jimmy Eat World fans," I'm somewhere in the middle (no pun intended, honestly): I'm not an old-school fan, and I haven't heard anything from the pre-"Bleed American" albums, but I've listened to the new album in its entirety - I heard about JEW through word of mouth - and THAT'S how I became a fan. Regarding the alleged overexposure of this song: Some complain that it's played out/overplayed/on the radio too much. I have avoided this problem. I don't listen to the radio. Having heard all of "Bleed American" before this was a single, I picked out my favorite songs without any exposure - and I did think "The Middle" was one of the best songs on the album. And on that note, I must say that I'm absolutely baffled by everyone seeminly going nuts over "Sweetness." That is the only song on the album that I can't stand at all. I'm very disappointed that it's a single. Some better JEW songs: "Get It Faster," "The Authority Song," "Hear You Me," "If You Don't, Don't"... I don't think the band has "sold out" at all, and frankly, I'm sick of people who whine that a band has "sold out" once it becomes popular. That attitude sucks. Finally, to answer the question about the possible double meaning of the JEW acronym - nope, none of them are Jewish. Later... jimmyeatworld.net (the official JEW site) eamon.cjb.net (my site, if you're interested) |
Third Eye Blind – 10 Days Late Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I think it's important that not all songs are inspired by direct experience; Stephan has not gotten a girl pregnant, as far as I know. I agree - very good song. Third Eye Blind has a new album coming out this summer. |
