David Wilcox – Farthest Shore Lyrics 15 years ago
An all-time favorite DW song of mine. Its a celebration of life, hence the lines,

And of all the things that make a life worth living...
That only come to those who dive right in

Basically, living with a passion for life will bring fulfillment.

At the same time, as we long for the "farthest shore" and actually reach there, we will remember who we were and what we believe, therefore what we truly put our faith in will be the tangible reality, thus no longer faith. We wil find eternal satisfaction and rest and finally be complete.

Led Zeppelin – Communication Breakdown Lyrics 15 years ago
This song to me is timeless, fresh every time I hear it. Looking now back in hindsight, if any ONE song could be the harbinger of both heavy metal and punk, this one would be it. While the song is not really either one, it is a singular acheivement, pummeling its way into a whole new era in music. And check out Plants vocals - boiling over with energy, it must have taken 5 people to hold him down. Hat's off!!

Led Zeppelin – Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman) Lyrics 15 years ago
This was the first led zep tune i ever heard - i was about 7 - and I was hooked! Never thought much about the lyrics, still don't, but man, that guitar riff smokes! I still feel the same thrill now as when I was a wee one. Robert Plant still in his prime singing voice completes the thrill. Hard to believe it has been almost 40 years.

Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights Lyrics 15 years ago
My girlfriend made a cassette recording of this song along with others for me when I moved to Miami in 1986. I was already familiar with the song but completely fell in love with it as I glided down the road for a week.

Well the tape became scratchy and worn so I bought the song on CD only to find that I had a second version of the song, not the original. I was never able to listen to the second version without pining for the original. I finally did the research and located the original, aaaahhhhh, and life has been wonderful ever since.

The original is even higher and more haunting than the 2nd. The book itself is stunning and whats more amazing is how well the song captures its raw, emotional essence.

Also check out the books by her sisters, Charlotte and Anne. They are also classics, particularly Jane Eyre, but written in a different vein than Emily's book. An amazing family, so much potential, so much tragedy.

A-Ha – Living A Boy's Adventure Tale Lyrics 15 years ago
OK, this IS my favorite A-Ha song.

I spent an inordinate amount of time during childhood just daydreaming, my imagination being my greatest adventure. Also roaming the countryside on the family farm, seeking something in my frequent walks. My melencholy personality and my somewhat voyeuristic observation of life lent itself to the rich, dark emotions the song describes.

I was always captivated by the oboe, a perfect instrument for the lyrics.

By the way, if anyone likes oboe in pop music, take a listen to "China Crisis - Working with Fire and Steel - Possible Pop Songs Vol. 2". Excellent oboe work in pop music.

The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics 15 years ago
I am almost in a coma after reading all these comments. A song is a great work of art when it has multiple meanings as well as speaks to different people in broadly different ways. It must also be true that the lyricist may writes his/her songs without realizing the full meaning at the time, perhaps never. So everybody might be right!!

What I like:

I have loved reggae since being a kid so I'm a sucker for the reggae inflected music of the song. This hooked me before listening for the lyrics.

Morrissey is almost unparelled in his ability to describe the total picture i.e. how we love and hate at the same time and that both emotions are legit. Listening to the Smiths helps me explore and face the emotions I want to deny. The Smiths are a gift to mankind.

k.d. lang – Constant Craving Lyrics 15 years ago
K.D. Lang is not one of my favorite singers nor do I particularly like much of her music myself, but I think she is extremely gifted.

However I find this song absolutely stunning and I never tire of it. The wonderfully lilting acoustic guitar and the rapturous, crytral clear harmonies put this song in its own catagory.

Her choice of the word "craving" and my general sense of the song makes me intrepret our "constant craving" very broadly, both good and bad "cravings". Basically it sums up all our desires. Be it lust, greed, worth, value, acceptance, impact, legacy, excitement, power, meaning, connection with God and others - our desires are powerful, all encompasing, universal and mostly go unsated. She understands what it is to be human.

Rush – Limelight Lyrics 15 years ago
This song grows in stature at each listen. I bought the vinyl when it came out - listened to it over and over. It's still in my Dad's basement getting covered with crud - oh well. MattK87 focuses in on the five lines I like too.

Those who wish to be (emphasis on be or "being")

Must put aside the alienation, (feeling disconnected, misunderstood and alone or feeling sorry for myself)

Get on with the fascination, (just look around, observe people, nature, yourself)

The real relation, (hmmm, God, higher power, the Tao)

The underlying theme (who am I, why am I here, what is life about?)

Recently, while going down the freeway, a meteor blazed across the sky as I was listening to this part of the song - talk about fascintation! And I already loved the song even before this happened.

Is somebody talking to me?

David Wilcox – That's What the Lonely Is For Lyrics 15 years ago
OK, I'll try to control myself. It would sound like hyperbole to say this is the most meaningful song I have ever heard, but I admit it must be. After my mother died about 5 years ago, depression and disillusionment ensued. Several things sustained me and "Lonely" was formost among them. Night after night, I would set it to play over and over as I would go to sleep. Somehow, the idea that lonliness was not an end in itself but a pointer to our capacity and potential, found a home in my grief. Even the idea of a grand designer at work - the lonliness indicating something greater, bigger is in store resonates as true. And the limits of self, i.e. dreams, wishes and vision are eclipsed by the "hope of the heart" where if you look closely, you glimpse rarely that infinite potential. "Might be" is everything that I am not. A stunning DW masterpiece!

The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics 16 years ago
Definitely one of my favorite smiths songs, never tire of it. Everyone part of the song is beautiful, lyrics and music...what I am always left with is the title of the song that is repeated over and over at the end. Morrisey paints a vivid and realistic picture of young love, the full picture, the estatic highs and the depths. As the song progresses and the lyrics pierce me, he gives a picture of hope at the end (thats right, Mitzy). Its seems everything in life takes a spritual dimension for me, but "the light that never goes out" keeps me from despair, i feel it, I sense it, i have it in my heart, but I really can't see it or describe it. Thanks you Smiths!
