@[HairyPalmJoe:48600] Apparently you're never heard "Pumped Up Kicks" or anything by The Smiths. Or Steely Dan

submissions
Boston – Hitch A Ride Lyrics 6 months ago
@[NooContact:48599] Surely you're joking. This song is anything but upbeat -- it's about suicidal ideation

submissions
Tom Waits – On the Nickel Lyrics 11 months ago
@[twain:46880] It's like the old hobo song "Big Rock Candy Mountain"

submissions
Tom Waits – On the Nickel Lyrics 11 months ago
A stark reminder that all of the homeless, the addicts, the mentally ill -- all of them were small children once

submissions
Calexico – Bullets and Rocks Lyrics 3 years ago
This song is all about the hell migrants go through to cross the border, usually by a coyote. It's about human trafficking.

submissions
Steely Dan – Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More Lyrics 3 years ago
It's about a pimp (Daddy) in NYC who wants to leave the life. He goes to see "a joker" and drives out to the burbs. Then he is never seen again. He probably has some beautiful grandchildren now.

submissions
Paul McCartney – Dear Boy Lyrics 3 years ago
I always thought this song was about Keith Moon

The Doobie Brothers – South City Midnight Lady Lyrics 3 years ago
I'm not sold on "midnight lady" meaning she's a CSW. She could have been a woman he met at a bar (drinking cheap whisky) and they went back to his place. He's got the shakes (it's obviously he's an alcoholic) and he can't sleep. So he smokes a cigarette and really likes the girl he met at the bar.

The Doobie Brothers – South City Midnight Lady Lyrics 3 years ago
@[MookieBomber:34679] There's nothing wrong with rap. Check out "Run the Jewels" or "Public Enemy." It's not rock and roll, or soul, it's it's own thing. You can enjoy the sublime music of The Doobies AND like rap

submissions
The Rolling Stones – Dead Flowers Lyrics 4 years ago
OK "Dead Flowers" == ganja.
"Needle and a Spoon" == heroin
And I think the girl he is singing this to is Edie Sedgewick

submissions
Bruce Springsteen – It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City Lyrics 4 years ago
This is a song about a street hustler -- a male prostitute. Once again, Bruce shows the underside of city life.

submissions
Steely Dan – Show Biz Kids Lyrics 4 years ago
@[Danfan:30604] But the song is modal, so the bass line gives it that modality. Add the fact that Derringer's solo is one half note sharper than the key, yet it all fits, shows you how genius these guys can be

submissions
Sufjan Stevens – To Be Alone with You Lyrics 5 years ago
It's about Jesus. Sufjan is a Christian, although not a "'Christian' 'Rock'" artist and most certainly not an evangelical (he's Catholic) he does put his faith his lyrics, including his anger towards god ("Cashmir Pulaski Day" is a perfect example.)

submissions
MGMT – When You Die Lyrics 5 years ago
To me this song is a guy's call for help as he screams at those who love him. He wants to kill himself to feel "nothing" and "permanent night"

submissions
Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 5 years ago
Pretty clear this song is about the Red Terror after the French Revolution. "With scarves of red tied 'round their throats/To keep their little heads from falling in the snow" refers to joining the "pack" to keep your head safe from the guillotine.

submissions
Steely Dan – Here At The Western World Lyrics 5 years ago
@[rikdad:29144] And I'm picking up an East Berlin/Communist World vibe where the Western Expats go for sex

submissions
Talking Heads – Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) Lyrics 6 years ago
Byrne has said in interviews this song is about paranoia, and not just government paranoia, but painting a government worker of some sort -- feeling paranoid and out of place. You are peering into this character's head, hearing his stream of consciousness thoughts.

submissions
The Shins – Phantom Limb Lyrics 6 years ago
The Shins have said this is about a lesbian couple, stuck in a conservative town and having to keep their relationship on the down low and hating it.

They can't wait to leave.

Another day in Trumpmerica.

submissions
Steely Dan – The Bear Lyrics 6 years ago
@[taverner:23158] I dunno... with lines like "You just can't stand still with a friend like mine" I am thinking about speed or coke

submissions
George Harrison – Dream Away Lyrics 6 years ago
From the Wikipedia article:

"In an interview on the UK Arrow Blu-ray release of Time Bandits Gilliam claimed that the lyrics to "Dream Away" are Harrison's notes to him concerning Gilliam's behaviour during the production of the film and, more specifically, the tension that arose between them due to Gilliam's reluctance to include any songs performed by Harrison in the film."

Beware of MAYA! That stuff will get ya.

submissions
My Bloody Valentine – Loomer Lyrics 6 years ago
Another great MBV song where the music tells the story more than the lyrics do. The lyrics, are more or less about childhood. The music captures the innocence and almost takes you to a garden party in the country on a rainy day, painted with watercolors.

He has learned Satre's and Camus' meaning of "absurdity."

submissions
Radiohead – The Numbers Lyrics 7 years ago
It's about the destruction of the planet. Climate change, nuclear winter, etc. And it's up to us to stop it. We may be too late.

submissions
Donald Fagen – Mary Shut The Garden Door Lyrics 7 years ago
A song about a cult (Scientology? Evangelical Republicanism? Trump? Michelle Bachmannism?) suddenly taking over and making the country into a theocracy. The "zombie" is the guy pretending he's all on board with the cult, as one has to do to survive.

Ween – Freedom of '76 Lyrics 8 years ago
Getting a BJ in Philly. Liberty Bell has more than one meaning here.

submissions
Ween – I Gots a Weasel Lyrics 8 years ago
It's about a pet weasel. That runs upstairs and sings like David Lee Roth.

submissions
Steely Dan – FM (No Static at All) Lyrics 8 years ago
On the surface about turning on some FM radio and getting it on with a girl. But like anything SD, it's chock full of sarcasm and mocking. "Funked up Muzak" -- the guy really doesn't care what plays, it's whatever works. Hedonism. Wonderful shallow hedonism.

submissions
Steely Dan – Aja Lyrics 8 years ago
Dude ranches were popular in the 70s for rich yuppies to play cowboy on weekends. They also did double duty as sets for western themed porn movies. "Double helix in the sky" is referring to cumshots. That's all I got.

submissions
Steely Dan – The Second Arrangement Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Starquest:6048] Nothing wrong with good disco. That genre was unfairly maligned in my opinion.

submissions
Chumbawamba – Look! No Strings! Lyrics 9 years ago
Chumbawamba are an anarchist group, in the same sense that Crass was an anarchist group.

The song is a cute, silly tale of an IN woman who shoots down some kind of Jesus kite.

And takes a picture.

And then the last line basically says "Fuck me Jesus," but backwards.

Great anti-religion anthem.

In fact, one of the best.

submissions
Talking Heads – Cities Lyrics 10 years ago
Dude - you got it. TH always explored the surreal - the dada. This is a band that wrote a song that sounds like a Joy Division song, without ever hearing Joy Division.

submissions
Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics 10 years ago
You're gonna reap just what you so - pretty much that thought that when the junk wears off, detox awaits. And if you've ever been dependent on opiates, you know how FUN that is.

The Clash – Ivan Meets G.I. Joe Lyrics 10 years ago
Yep.

Steely Dan – Time Out of Mind Lyrics 10 years ago
Nope. Chasing the Dragon is either smoking opium, smoking heroin, and sometimes used for shooting heroin.

Steely Dan – Time Out of Mind Lyrics 10 years ago
Just because they weren't doing it doesn't mean they didn't milk their experiences for song. All that trouble should come to SOME good. :)

submissions
Steely Dan – Time Out of Mind Lyrics 10 years ago
Trust me. Don't. :) It will be the greatest euphoria of your life, followed by the worst hangover of your life.

submissions
Steely Dan – Babylon Sisters Lyrics 10 years ago
Side note, but "Cotton Candy Heroin" was all over the place in the 70's. Cotton Candy, because it had a slightly pink hue, and it needed to be cut with sucrose.

submissions
Steely Dan – Josie Lyrics 10 years ago
I can't help but wonder --- is this their secret song about Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch?

submissions
Steely Dan – The Bear Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about drug smuggling and a warning against "tasting" the product

submissions
Traffic – Medicated Goo Lyrics 10 years ago
Pretty straight forward. Kid, take your medicine, it will make you well. At the same time parodying the blind following of patients of their doctors.

submissions
Traffic – The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys Lyrics 10 years ago
It is about the music industry f&%#!ing you over. And how the the banks get you to buy stuff beyond your means on credit - eerily foreshadowing the 2007 crisis.

Screaming Trees – All I Know Lyrics 11 years ago

Genesis – Harold The Barrel Lyrics 12 years ago
Pretty much what it says in the song.

A guy may or may have not cut off his toes and served them with tea.

Then he went to a ledge, and threatened to jump.

Crowds show and try to talk him down.

His mother is more worried about his appearance than his state of mind.

He jumps - end of song.
