Clutch – When Vegans Attack Lyrics 16 years ago
People will eat meat?

People will fight wars.

Until they don't, that is. Not likely to happen in either case, barring some unforeseen development, but nevertheless perhaps progress could be made.

Warfare, rape and pillage were the way for humans for thousands of years (still are, kinda), yet somehow we think that they're worth trying to avoid. It's that whole evolution thing, whatever is isn't necessarily good, it's just what got us where we are. And given that you seem to think that where we are is a sea of shit, I don't see why you'd think that what we've done for a long time is worth continuing on that account.

And of course you can compare two different situations, the whole point of comparing things is that they're different, but not in every way.

War is organized violence directed against humans for some purpose.

The meat industry engages in organized violence against other animals for a different purpose.

Would war be OK if somebody invented, say, microwave weapons that killed people almost painlessly? No? Then maybe people can still object to the wholesale slaughter of animals, if they actually consider those animals to have a value similar to humans, even if they aren't tortured before being slaughtered.

You ever had a pet you loved, or known someone who did? I used to know someone who had a pet pig, knew someone who raised laying hens almost like pets.

Naturally, I'd consider it a bit more tragic for someone's child to be killed by a passing car than for their dog to be killed in similar circumstances, but it's still a little tragedy when that happens.

You may not think or feel that way about animals, but some do.

Pointless? WTF?

One of us must not know what that word means.

And btw:

Disliking self righteousness = perfectly reasonable.

Being a self righteous dick to try to prove that self righteousness is obnoxious = counterproductive.

To quote an earlier comment on the thread:

"the point is lost cause the title and the lyrics are provoking and insulting"

And your whole "too cool for school" constant sarcasm act makes it a bit silly of you to complain about people being dicks, heh.

Others can and will opine differently, naturally.

THJ:

If you said something against the Iraq war, and someone responded that there are bigger problems than "a few [countries] acting unkindly to a tiny minority of [people]", would you be satisfied with that response?

If not, congratulations!

You may already not be a moron!

And you may, with just a little bit of exercise of that brain that -you personally- didn't need to eat animals to develop, be able to see the logical parallel between the comment I made up and the one you made.

Your presumptive valuation of hominid over other forms of life aside, there's no difference.

germophobe:

your capacity to fail to understand the positions and people that you attack is impressive, but it does little to enhance your position.

Saying that a song is shit or offensive or whatever is every bit as much a legitimate discussion of a song, objectively, as saying that it's great or you really connected to it or whatever.

Mr. Bungle – Vanity Fair Lyrics 16 years ago
The Latin word for "sheath" is "vagina".

Indeed "vagina" as a clinical term for the female genitalia indicates the fundamental sexism of the weltenschaung that gave rise to our modern world; with the notion that woman exists for man, but without the notion that man exists for woman.

"And remove the sheath of your ignorance
Bless the eunuch
And the Skoptsi"

There is a strong current in human history of "religion" or psychic development being pursued by those who believe the physical side of humanity, in its rawest form the sexual side, to be inherently corrupt. To paraphrase the gospels, "if your left nut causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it into the fire".

"With the orgies of the sacrament"

The eucharist is the mock devouring of the flesh and blood of a human sacrifice, a parody of earlier pagan rites of eating a sacrificial animal, and still earlier rites of actually eating a human sacrifice. The accompanying wine/blood perhaps comes from the bacchanlia, pagan orgies.

"But it's a cheap world and you don't exist..."

The illusory nature of the reality of the senses is a common thread in ascetic religion. . .

"Slit the fabric of the right now"

as is the metaphor of a "veil" of illusion, and the focus on perception of time, on the "eternal now".

"spread your legs and wear the crown"

Babylon, the mother of harlots, drinks the blood of the saints. The eucharist is the drinking of the blood of the Christ.

"Tell me how long, lord, how long?
Till I get my beauty sleep?"

The elevation of the aterlife in Christianity is only possible at the cost of degrading the present life; if perfection is only attainable in the heaven after death, then why do we not seek out death? Indeed, Christians often have.

Placebo – Song To Say Goodbye Lyrics 16 years ago
I never would have thought that this was about two parts of one person before I saw the video.

I thought it was about a guy trying, unsuccessfully, to get his friend out of a coma from a heroin OD. It starts with anger and moves to just the fear and the pain of losing his friend.

From "you are one of god's mistakes" to "if I don't [wake you] we'll both end up with just your songs to say goodbye. . . it's a song to say goodbye".

The kid in the video could be a friend, or the influence of someone else, but setting up internal conflict with the "addict part" of oneself to try to break with the pattern of behavior makes some sense as well. I'll ask Placebo if I meet them, heh.

The Sounds – Queen of Apology Lyrics 16 years ago
Definitely about addiction. It's natural to fall into a cycle of self-blame and denial (apologies).

The fact is that addiction, for many people, never -really- goes away. It can take a long time to be able to get through a day without the shakes, and that time can be more physically painful than anything else they've experienced.

And even then, for many people not a day will go by that they won't have to fight that feeling, and they do fight it knowing that all they have to do is smoke/drink/poke one quick fix and the pain would go away.

And of course, if she doesn't quit, she wakes up knowing what she did thas shortened her life. It will kill her if she keeps going, but maybe it's worse to quit.

Addiction isn't fair.

AFI – Miss Murder Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about Jesus, Hitler, and many other things. Essentially Hitler saw himself as the savior of the German people, much as Jesus was said to have seen himself as the savior of the Judaen people. There are very strong elements of religion in contemporaraneous German art, in the ceremonies instituted by the national socialists, and even in the name they chose (third -Reich-, after the "Holy Roman Empire" of old).

The "golden ring" that we would never let go could easily be a reference to the ring in the saga of the Niebelungenlied, a symbol in pagan Germanic myth for the destiny of the German peoples and their place as favored of the gods.

Of course you'll agree that the Nazis should not have been able to "lay their filthy hands upon" the greatest secrets of the universe, but who among us truly would be worthy?

Miss Murder could be Kali, mistress of death and also of rebirth and reincarnation. I've read that suicides were held by some ancient traditions to be bound to the earth, forced to be reborn (seek to lose your life and gain it??).

"Empty set" is a mathematical concept. It would be used, for example, to answer the problem, "list all values of x for which x = x+1". The empty set is not "zero" or "nothing" in the common use of the word. To butcher a zen koan, "Once a student asked his master, 'Sir, what is it like to attain Buddhahood?' His master shouted, 'The empty set!'"

That said, perhaps a better question to ask than "What does this song objectively mean?" is "What can I subjectively learn from experiencing this song??

AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics 16 years ago
Reincarnation. "We" bounce from life to life, some lives male, some female. Some (maybe all) of us form attachments that survive beyond a lifetime. Hence he/she tastes the war of years before. "For ever" she says, and maybe it is so, or maybe all good things must end.

Editors – Fingers In The Factories Lyrics 16 years ago
The voice of this song is interesting. . . it seems that the singer is speaking for the 'proletariat', and the listener is "the dirty night. . .". Perhaps the song intends to make the audience think about their role in the tragedy of so many lives, and "keep with me" essentially means, "Don't turn away, look at the blood and the pain and the fear and the hate that really make your life possible".

Mr. Bungle – Retrovertigo Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that "retrovertigo" refers to the dizziness one feels when looking back at the immense stretch of time before the present, the eternal void of all the "once weres". the strange disconcertion at staring at something that isn't real.

"see the vintage robot wearied, then awakened by revision theories, every famine [is] virtual"

The vintage robot is of course Everyman, it is you and it is I.

History is a lie, a mythology created to avoid having to actually experience the sensation of genuinely looking at "the past". It is only too human of a response to look at anything in "the past" and read into it our thoughts, fears, hopes or dreams of today and for tomorrow.

It is extremely stressfull and exhausting to challenge what one has held to be true for as long as one can remember, but it can eventually lead to an awakening.

Every famine virtual. . . Sell the rights to your blight, and you'll eat. . .

See the "Irish potato famine".

Personally, I think this song is about a lot more than media.

Mr. Bungle – None Of Them Knew They Were Robots Lyrics 16 years ago
Bitic refers to something that was originally created by a computer or artificial intelligence. The 'trees' of Qabala are the "great mysteries" (arcanum = mystery) of a particular sect of Judaic mystics.

Qabala involves the study of letters and words in the Hebrew language, particularly as arranged in the ancient Hebrew religious texts, to gain insight. Logos = greek for word, or The Word, was used by the pre-socratics to signify the organizing principle of the universe (this is the basis of a famous passage in the Gospel of John). Some scholars consider Hebrew to be derivative from ancient Greek.

The song seems to be full of rich association; it is an attempt to express the inexpressible (the author's entire way of viewing the world) in words that are entertaining set to quirky music.

My take on what he means could be most bluntly summed up as "people believe their own lies, and it's tearing the world apart, and NONE OF THEM KNEW, NONE OF THEM KNEW."
