Neil Diamond – I Am... I Said Lyrics 16 years ago
We weren't content to be a frog, so we strived to be a king. Success turned hollow, and life turned to quiet desparation, and the utter pain of existence. We've all been there.

Elton John – Daniel Lyrics 16 years ago
The song is about the pain of losing your older brother. It resonates with many scenarios, and the particular one that the writer conceived is not what makes the song great. Its emotional resonance makes it great.

Elton John – Levon Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the song is a portrait of Levon, a metaphorical British WWII veteran, living a simple life in the UK, born at a cursed time and fading away, with his investments and hopes tied up with the next generation.

The line that goes 'cause he likes the name' indicates that Levon is not very religious. He's someone we all know fairly well, and who deserves our bittersweet thanks.

Daniel Johnston – Living Life Lyrics 16 years ago
Daniel's recording captures the Euphoria and Now Presence of the manic state. It is a glimpse of Nirvana, but so addictive because it ruins plain reality as it retreats.

Daniel Johnston – Walking The Cow Lyrics 16 years ago
I think Daniel is sharing one of his depressed spirits. He feels great loss and now he can't reengage the world. So he wanders in depression - walking the cow.

Daniel Johnston – The Story of an Artist Lyrics 16 years ago
Daniel felt his art was his purpose; society told him to conform. His own parents blamed his condition on his art, which was his only outlet.

He sinigs this song to free us all to explore our art.

Roger Waters – What God Wants, Part I Lyrics 16 years ago
If God is omnipotent, then what "IS" is God's will. I think its as simple as that.

Is your concept of God big enough to believe he makes autistic children, psychopaths and war mongers?

If you believe in an omnipotent God, then you must believe he created these things.

Daniel Johnston – Like a Monkey in a Zoo Lyrics 16 years ago
This song really reveals the hypocrisy of psychiatric treatment in our society. It shows how society doesn't want to feel it hurt you overtly for being mentally ill, but is more then willing to make you a vegetable and minimize the hassle of dealing with you. Daniel's voice cries out for many forgotten souls languishing in their cages; like monkeys in a zoo.

Daniel Johnston – Devil Town Lyrics 16 years ago
I think Daniel was trying to reflect on a mixed bipolar episode he had experienced. I don't know that for sure, but that is how I connect with this song. For me, "They Live" was for real, the world was dark, and everyone was soulless. It wasn't a political statement, it was just an altered state of spiritual perception, that eerily still fit reality.
