Maroon 5 – Harder To Breathe Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about their major label wanting more music from them for their debut. They were pissed so they wrote this one to meet the quota.

Warpaint – Teese Lyrics 10 years ago
Let go and let love. She's in love with someone that has an incredibly anxious mind, a beautiful mind, but anxious and restless. This song seems to be saying, "Ssshhh, stop. Everything's fine. I see the conflict, I don't ignore it, but let's breathe."

Warpaint – Biggy Lyrics 10 years ago
A song about someone struggling or realizing a transformation from being chronically melancholy into someone happier.

All brought about by falling for someone. Last verse/line says it all.

Warpaint – Love Is to Die Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about the ups and downs of love, but in a very optimistic fashion. It's about the give and take, the compromises, the valleys, the highs.

The reason I think it's overall very optimistic is because of the last line "Love is to die, why did you not die", as if to say, "yes, that hurt, but we're okay, we didn't die and we love each other so...let's just dance."

The one line that bugs me that I have no clue about is "learn to the five"

Warpaint – Keep It Healthy Lyrics 10 years ago
I am pretty unsure about this one, but given how past Warpaint songs about one of the band members' children, I feel pretty inclined to think this one is the next one in that series.

She's seeing herself in her daughter/son, and how the kid wants to do things themselves and already knows everything while really knowing nothing. "I could not believe what you have said, "With all the experience," Was your crowning credit."

The mother/kid thing is very evident in the chorus, like a stern but not angry reminder "you come from me, don't forget"

The only thing that doesn't make sense is the constant alluding to dreaming. That doesn't hold any water with my interpretation and I can't figure out a context for it.

Warpaint – Hi Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's pretty easy to overcomplicate stuff. This is a song about a friend that came to the narrator (or the band) and talked with them "up all night about their falling heart". This person was "leaving a place" (a metaphorical closet).

The person opened up to their mother first and their mother denied them "she knows your face, can do without".

The person is talking with them all night about this conflict, and the receiver(s) of this information are just overjoyed that someone is sharing something so deep, and so personal. The person is "coming out" to the narrator, and the narrator is very sad this person was rejected by family "I know it hurts...when you can't come out", but also extremely happy and grateful they opened up so much "but you brought us up to so high".

The chorus is them telling this person to be optimistic, to be happy "In the middle of the day, We find love". Be yourself and love will happen at the most random of times.

The title, "Hi" is because they feel like they're finally meeting the truest form of this person for the first time.

I think it's about maintaining artistic integrity and not losing yourself under major label pressure.

Ani DiFranco – School Night Lyrics 15 years ago
It's obviously about an affair that the protagoanist feels bad about and knows has to end it and does so, but somewhat reluctantly. The first 3 paragraphs are songwriting at its best.

Underoath – Burden in Your Hands Lyrics 15 years ago
What's sad is how accepting people are of SOAD's political lyrics (that are also pretty shitty) yet a conservative band speaks up and it suddenly ruins the band or song, whereas if someone said the same thing about an SOAD song...

...well, that's just wrong. -_-

I agree that the lyrics aren't that well-written, but the music is phenonemal and the band should be commended for their relentless execution.

Project 86 – Another Boredom Movement Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought it was obvious, but by the other comments, it's obviously not. It's a song about mainstream labels, but to the bands that put out whatever the labels want them to. They keep putting out the same, simple-minded trash with little no creativity that's all structured with money and marketing in mind.

It's not art, it's business.

The label conceives the artist on a storyboard, much like a cartoon or comic book. The "artist" succeeds (4th line) and the chorus shows the corporate idea of success.

The second verse, the artist is the puppet and the suits are the puppeteers. Either they get rich or you get tossed aside, but either way, they'll be making money because "units are moving"; or you'll get tossed aside by the label, "the same pigs that made you."

"And invent brand name for your believers
Like brands on slaves"

Merch anyone? Genius lyrics.

The last lines are about how it's the same drivel, and even though we continue to suck it up, the only reason we do is because we're still waiting for something stimulating, something REAL.

Queens of the Stone Age – Burn The Witch Lyrics 15 years ago
I really, really like the media explanation of it. If that was Homme's intention, then these lyrics are flat-out genius. Makes perfect sense and even the pscyhidelic feel of the song fits when you're in the spotlight and everyone's coming after you with the latest scandal.

Great.

Incredibly sad song. I think it's about having to still be friends with a former romance that the narrator isn't over.

Underoath – The Created Void Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree the song is about the narrator not being able to communicate his relationship has with Christ very clearly to others that don't have one. My favorite lines:
"There’s nothing but red and all the mess I’ve been"
"I say what I don’t mean, and mean what I don’t"
"They will never understand What eats at our insides"

I think the last line really emphasizes the separation he feels when he can't share it properly.

Norma Jean – Vipers, Snakes, and Actors Lyrics 15 years ago
@Stevo:
We're actually saying the same thing, in a sense. There are Christians, churchfolk out there, that "wear the cross like a crown"...cocky, self-centered individuals that have no concept of the true nature of Christ or Christianity or a spiritual life.

I think this song is about religion vs. spirituality in the sense of the individuals following them.

Being a Christian isn't something I think Christians are supposed to brag about wear on their sleeves, prancing around like they're better than everyone. I think they are exactly who this song is to: the vipers, snakes, and actors.

Christianity without Christ.

Portishead – Mourning Air Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's more about infatuation and taking the chance of acting on it vs. remaining in isolation and grief from an unnamed hurt/tragedy.
The horns in the song soften the darkness and give it an almost, very subtle risque sort of vibe amid the swirling darkness.

Scarling – So Long, Scarecrow Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's NOT about my interpretation, but I view the lyrics as an ode to suicide.

A little more likely is the narrator is sick of dealing with a drama queen, a scarecrow. Caring and trying to help people that don't want to be saved is exhausting, and eventually you have to say...So Long...

I think it's about religion vs. spirituality. A body of laws and causes with little to no reason vs. a spiritual approach.
I personally relate to this song really well.

Duncan Sheik – Foreshadowing Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about forsaking religion/spirituality for life here on earth. Perhaps Sheik is an agnostic because while he argues that it's a "poisonous idea", he also acknowledges this life might be a "foreshadowing of what's to come". Really talented lyrics.

Duncan Sheik – On A High Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about happiness being a state of mind and not something determined by your circumstances. It offers two different perspectives: the non-circumstantial happiness, the "high", and then the perspective of refusing to be content with your mistakes.

For me personally, it's a very relevant song in modern society because we're so materialistic and raised to believe that happiness is circumstantial but it truly isn't. It's a choice.

Ashes Divide – Forever Can Be Lyrics 16 years ago
Holy shit.

"We all want you to see the you we see"

That's one of the best lines I've heard in ages. So simple but it says so much. I agree that it's about helping someone through a dark depression.
Basically, the narrator is encouraging someone to keep going because it doesn't end here, he/she could leave a different legacy.

This is an incredible song.

Toadies – I Burn Lyrics 16 years ago
I disagree with pretty much everyone on the specifics. In my opinion, it's definitely about spirituality, which makes other appearances on the album theme-wise (Backslider comes to mind first).

I personally think it's about how he felt controlled and enslaved by religion, but when he left the church and spiraled into a life of "sin" he began to burn.

So now he's torn between living a life of selfish desires while dissolving, or returning to the chains of the church. Ultimately, the song is without resolution as he just continues to burn in indifference, which is how the song begins as well.

ANOTHER way to interpret it is flat-out rebellion from the church. "Tooth and bone, unimpressive, I have left these things"; that line argues that point the most. He feels simultaneously cleansed by the freedom of religious bondage but dirty because of what's been engraved, thus the "burning" being the adjective used to describe the conflict and/or transition.

I can't believe it's not butter!

...no really, I can't believe there's even a commentary on this song, it's obviously about heroin and/or drug addiction in general. SOAD are very vocal about not doing drugs.

Portishead – Threads Lyrics 16 years ago
While guilt may be the catalyst, I think it's much closer to the curse of most intellectuals: over-analyzation. Always thinking, always questioning, always mentally occupied to the point of emotional oblivion...hence this song.

"tired of my mind"
"I battle my thoughts"
"i'm worn out, thinking of why"

I identify with this beyond reasoning.
