A Perfect Circle – The Outsider Lyrics 12 years ago
I think looking at it as someone who's strictly suicidal is taking the lyrics far too literally. Given that the title is "The Outsider" and the fact that the entire album is about addiction, I think that this song sticks with the theme. Most of the songs have been through the eyes of the addict, more or less, but this song is different, being from the point of view of "The Outsider" (someone who watching the addict from the outside).

This is a song of the frustration of watching someone you know self destruct, and, in the eyes of the outsider, acting selfishly and attention seeking by hurting themselves and others with their addictions. It can be incredibly frustrating for someone to watch a person basically killing themselves with their own selfishness, hence the "pounding at a fault line." He feels like he's done everything he can to help this person and he's reached the breaking point since they've done nothing but take it for granted, so this song is him throwing his hands into the air saying, "I give up, I'm done with you."

Eminem – Love The Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) Lyrics 13 years ago
Honestly, this may be about a relationship where a girl is getting abused, but in the video and in the words it seems as if the relationship is abusive on both sides. And as a girl who was in an... unhealthy relationship, I can say that as much as is it often the man taking the role of abuser, there are cases where it's women who throw the first punch.

Now you're in each other's face
Spewing venom in your words when you spit 'em
You push, pull each other's hair
Scratch, claw, bit 'em
Throw 'em down, pin 'em
So lost in the moments when you're in 'em
It's the rage that took over
It controls you both
So they say it best to go your separate ways

Right here, he's not negating his own anger and violence, but subtly suggesting hers as well in a way that doesn't suggest the blame game but the truth. "It's the rage that took over, It controls you both." This is a song about two completely disfunctional, angry people in a relationship together.

Hollywood Undead – Paradise Lost Lyrics 13 years ago
*sigh* Arguing (especially religion) over the internet is pointless, people. There's no right or wrong so you'll just feel like frustrated and angry over no real reason-- because someone doesn't have the same belief as you? I thought we were supposed to accept people's different ideals?

Anyway. I'm disappointed! Milton? Anyone? This is taken from poem of the same name, which, for a good portion of the book, is painting Lucifer in a positive life, and it's clearly a reference to his point of view-- feeling as though he was forsaken in favor of humanity. "This life that's so fateless/How could he just forsake us?" Although I will say this song makes it a much more... sympathetic view than even Milton did (his acknowledgements of Satan's failings were present) so this song seems like someone who was... inspired more than anything. But "Let it all burn/I will burn first" is a pretty clear reference to Lucifer, the first fall, and the one to say "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven."

Carbon Leaf – What about everything? Lyrics 14 years ago
I think, in the first verse, the guy is talking about driving around, during the Holidays, looking for an escape because he feels like everything he does is life or death, and his first questions are thinking just about himself ("What about broken car? What about my life so far?") But he starts to think of people other than himself, and realizes "I am not in need." Likewise, in the second verse, he's thinking about school and work and life and no time for yourself, because even if you take time to have fun, what do you get out of it? ("I think about time for fun, I think about time for play, then I think about being done, with no resume.") But he starts to see the things that working will get him ("What about fortune and fame? What about your love to obtain? What about the ring?" I.e., marriage.)

He realizes that he can't find it in him to complain "I find it hard to complain when compared with what about--What about everything? What about aeroplanes? And what about ships that drank the sea? What about the moon and stars? What about soldier battle scars and all the anger that they eat?" Finally he thinks about the big things, aliens, "you and me", "what about when buildings fall," (which could be 9/11 reference, but not necessarily,) or "What about that midnight phone call, the one that wakes you from your peace?" Those are the calls everyone's terrified to receive, because they're never good, and it could mean you lost someone close to you.

He's driving and he's thinking about all of this and he realizes, "Well, I am not in need."

Gavin Mikhail – Sight Unseen Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this one has a lot of emotion! It seems like someone who deals with a lot (maybe depression?) and he falls in love with someone who finally starts to feel great things, but he's terrified. If I'm in the right mood this song can actually make me cry. ;P

Eve 6 – Bring the Night On Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay, I could be totally wrong, but here's what I think. I think it's about a couple who have a lot of problems, but it's about how at night, having sex, it really defines the relationship and how he feels about her. He's saying they argue during the day, "I'm warning you tonight is not the night for fights, lies white or otherwise. My mood isn't better yet, sober and humorless." This is all he feels like he's getting from being with her, but at the same time, "I'm trying to let you know, you're not just another," She's not like any other girl, "You're under the covers, I'm under your thumb." When they're together like that, she's the only one, and he can't say no to her. But she's argumentative and it's difficult, "Okay I'm lying when I'm telling you you're right, but you don't like the truth served straight or otherwise." So, he's just trying to tell her "You're the finest of specimens," but the truth is, it's a really messed up relationship with lots of arguing.

Okay, wow that was long. I'ma shut up now.

Correction:
Daniel, won't you listen to the words I say?

This is a great song about loving someone going down a bad road and I know I can relate. My cousin and I are pretty close, and he was getting into trouble with drugs and such. I know times when I felt like this about MY Dan.

Vienna Teng – Shasta (Carrie's Song) Lyrics 16 years ago
Hm, it seems like it's a woman who intends to have an abortion because she's put into a bad situation "tears that once did flow, starting ten o'clock and ending at dawn." She ends up driving back after not doing it, though, "you put a hand to the belly that's foriegn more with every day like an oversized load." She's scared of how people will react "they'll take your in your arms and then they'll take out their knives," so she keeps on driving. As she does, she's thinking about the woman who was "handing out pamphlets by the clinic door saying "Jesus knows what you've been through. Take the Savior into your heart my child, there's love waiting for the both of you."" She ends up thinking about, ironically, "somebody died that day, the you that was so carefully planned," and she knows her life will never be the same, but "maybe this life is like a sleeping mountain, waking up to shake the land."

(By the way, I'm not pro-life or pro-choice in this. It's all personal.)

Blue October – 3 Weeks, She Sleeps Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics are actually
"I run out of ways
Self books, love crooks, steal her away
It's who you know and where you go"
But, anyway, yeah, it does seem to be about a man struggling to help a girl he cares about through depression.
