Grandaddy – Kim, You Bore Me to Death Lyrics 7 years ago
@[The:19031] Dog That Ate... yeah, you left this comment 11 years ago, but you've gotta be right about the Pixies connection. The instrumentation is 100% a Pixies homage. Heavy, bass-forward verses, low-fi fuzzed out electric solos, and Jason's definitely channeling Frank Black in the screaming sections.

Father John Misty – Well, You Can Do It Without Me Lyrics 7 years ago
It hadn't occurred to me that he might have written it with a specific person (Pecknold) in mind, but the pieces do seem to fit just right with that theory.
My interpretation has always been that it's just a general criticism of political/societal leaders and movements that, in pursuit of their own interests, tend to involve unwilling participants. It almost has a sort of libertarian, live-and-let-live slant to it, just like "knock yourself out with whatever vain ambitions you may have, but you'd better not expect me to let your bullshit distract me from doing my thing."

Jason Isbell – 24 Frames Lyrics 8 years ago
Standard frame rate in film is 24 frames/sec. I interpret it as being about how your life, and all your plans for it, can be ripped it from under you in an instant.

King Tuff – Lazer Beam Lyrics 8 years ago
Pretty straight forward "I want to bang you" song.

Pedro the Lion – Suspect Fled the Scene Lyrics 9 years ago
I'm pretty sure I heard Bazan say that this was about someone who had been convicted of a sex crime. That reading really makes a lot of sense, especially the "it won't go away" refrain: something like that on your record follows you around forever and you'll never find a community to accept you, even if you are reformed/rehabilitated. Or if you're one of the unfortunate people who has consensual sex with a 16 year-old when you're 18 and then has to forever be registered as a sex criminal.

Jason Isbell – Yvette Lyrics 10 years ago
I'd agree, except that it seems to me to be mostly the kid planning this shooting and stops short of him actually going through with it. It reminds me a lot of "Sink Hole" by Patterson Hood, although in that song it feels more like just fantasizing about killing the banker and in "Yvette" it seems more like the kid's actually planning to do it. But I like the fact that it stops short of the killing, because the uncertainty about whether he will actually do it or not keeps a lot of tension in it. And that unresolved tension is what makes the Southern Gothic genre so great, isn't it?

Drive-By Truckers – Bob Lyrics 14 years ago
"Light in the loafers" is a euphemism for gay. I don't know if that's just a southern saying, but that's what it means. So one's interpretation of the song depends on whether you think Cooley's being ironic or literal when he says "Bob ain't light in the loafers.".

Drive-By Truckers – You and Your Crystal Meth Lyrics 16 years ago
pretty straightforward comment on the Meth epidemic, and how it's ruining lives and families right under our noses.

Drive-By Truckers – Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife Lyrics 16 years ago
I think I heard Hood say that this was written to try to find some hope in a crappy situation. And I think it's supposed to be uplifting, but I think it's supposed to be from the point of view of those left behind, imagining the deceased in a happy, peaceful place.

Drive-By Truckers – The Monument Valley Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about how much of heroism is actual, how much is perceived, and how much it matters which it really is.

Drive-By Truckers – That Man I Shot Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty poignant look at a (ex?) soldier having to deal with guilt and confusion after having killed a man in Iraq, not knowing exactly who the man was, if he was indeed the enemy, etc.

I think the most interesting line is "I hold my little ones until we disappear."

Probably the most rocking song on the album.

Drive-By Truckers – Bob Lyrics 16 years ago
I think royalfowey's interpretation is probably close to what Cooley was thinking, but when I first heard the song, I interpreted it differently. I thought (and still kinda do think) that kneeling actually meant giving oral sex to men, and that this song was a jab at southern homophobia; splitting hairs between sexual acts and rationalizing them ("well, at least he don't take it in the butt...")

I think the song means more to me with my interpretation, correct or not.

Drive-By Truckers – 3 Dimes Down Lyrics 16 years ago
Most of the song makes me think about just reckless living, but I haven't got a clue about what 3 dimes down/25 cents is referencing.
