The Cure – The Same Deep Water as You Lyrics 14 years ago
"The shallow drowned lose less than we"

My interpretation... yes, I guess it has to do with human depth... but (imo) I think if you drown in shallow water, you've had to fight a lot less for your life... if you drown in deep water... you've had to fight a lot for a life that you (inevitably) lost. We're all drowning metaphorically... some have to fight harder than others to stay alive, physically and emotionally. The ones that are in deeper water... and who have more depth, they have more to lose when they've drowned. Does that make sense? Probably not... it makes sense in my mind!

ah I love these guys.................

The Cure – How Beautiful You Are... Lyrics 15 years ago
This is what the song was inspired by:

C. Baudelaire - Les Yeux des Pauvres

--> English translation

The Eyes of the Poor

Oh! You want to know why I hate you today. It will undoubtedly be less easy for you to understand than it will be for me to explain, for you are, I believe, the most beautiful example of feminine impermeability one could ever encounter.

We had spent together a long day that had seemed short to me. We had indeed promised that we would share all of our thoughts with one another, and that our two souls would henceforth be one -- a dream that isn't the least bit original, after all, if not that, dreamed of by all men, it has been realized by none.

In the evening, a bit tired, we wanted to sit down in front of a new café that formed the corner of a new boulevard, still strewn with debris and already gloriously displaying its unfinished splendors. The café was sparkling. The gaslight itself sent forth all the ardor of a debut and lit with all its force walls blinding in their whiteness, dazzling sheets of mirrors, the gold of the rods and cornices, chubby-cheeked page-boys being dragged by dogs on leashes, laughing ladies with falcons perched on their wrist, nymphs and goddesses carrying on their heads fruits, pies, and poultry, Hebes and Ganymedes presenting in out-stretched arms little amphoras filled with Bavarian cream or bi-colored obelisks of ice cream -- all of history and all of mythology at the service of gluttony.

Right in front of us, on the sidewalk, a worthy man in his forties was standing, with a tired face, a greying beard, and holding with one hand a little boy and carrying on the other arm a little being too weak to walk. He was playing the role of nanny and had taken his children out for a walk in the night air. All in rags. The three faces were extraordinarily serious, and the six eyes contemplated fixedly the new café with an equal admiration, but shaded differently according to their age.

The father's eyes said: "How beautiful it is! How beautiful it is! You'd think all the gold in this poor world was on its walls." -- The eyes of the little boy: "How beautiful it is! How beautiful it is! But it's a house only people who aren't like us can enter." -- As for the eyes of the smaller child, they were too fascinated to express anything other than a stupid and profound joy.

Song-writers say that pleasure makes the soul good and softens the heart. The song was right this evening, as regards me. Not only was I moved by this family of eyes, but I also felt a little ashamed of our glasses and our carafes, which were larger than our thirst. I turned my gaze toward your's, dear love, to read my thoughts there; I plunged into your so beautiful and so bizarrely gentle eyes, into your green eyes, inhabited by Caprice and inspired by the Moon, and then you said to me: "I can't stand those people over there, with their eyes wide open like carriage gates! Can't you tell the head-waiter to send them away?"

So difficult is it to understand one another, my dear angel, and so incommunicable is thought, even between people in love!

Joy Division – The Eternal Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm listening to Joy Division for the very first time at the moment, and they are just... quite simply amazing. This song especially pulled me in, and as someone else said... It's very haunting. I just looked up "The Sound and the Fury" on wikipedia and it sounds pretty interesting, is this what he based the song on? I might have to go have a look for it at the library tomorrow.

I can't believe I've lived over 22 years without hearing these guys :|

The Cure – The Hanging Garden Lyrics 15 years ago
I haven't heard AFI's version, and although I don't mind a bit of AFI, I've never really liked any attempts at anyone covering a Cure song, it just can't be done (not well anyway). The Cure are the only ones who can play Cure songs (in my opinion of course). Actually... I partially take that back. 311 did an alright version of Lovesong, however it's nothing compared to the original.

ANYWAY... I also heard that this was based on the book "The Hanging Garden", which I haven't read. But I guess all music is open to interpretation, so regardless of what it's based on, make it your own... and give it meaning.

The Glove – Mr. Alphabet Says Lyrics 15 years ago
The first time I heard it, I was pretty sure it was mocking dogma; religion; the bible... and all the dumb rules of it. Could be, and most likely am, wrong though lol.

The Cure – A Night Like This Lyrics 16 years ago
This song gives me shivers, it's so great. The live version on the Show album is even better than the studio version imo. You can hear the emotion in Robert's voice more. Aaah Robert Smith, thank you for making such beautiful music...

The Cure – A Thousand Hours Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with JayDog. It's such a beautiful song, and you could relate with it on a number of levels. I can't believe more people haven't commented on this, it would have to be one of my favourite Cure songs.

A thousand wasted hours a day...

Just to feel my heart for a second...

A thousand hours just thrown away...

Just to feel my heart for a second.

I relate to this in the sense that you waste time thinking about a certain person for countless hours a day, you think about talking to them, or being with them, and when you finally get in contact with them it's only brief, and you don't feel completely satisfied, but you felt something.. Which is more than nothing "Just to feel my heart for a second". Then you go back to wasting your hours thinking of them... For how much longer can your thoughts go unnoticed and/or unappreciated.. You're coming to realise that it will never be.

lol@ Zeal. Closingdown, my friend, you just got owned. But in all honesty it's all relevant to the perspective of the person listening to it in my opinion. Both views are good :] Such a brilliant song.

Escape the Fate – There's No Sympathy for the Dead Lyrics 16 years ago
From what I've read (lol and admittedly I have not read all the comments) you all seem to think that this song is either a biblical reference to the apocalypse or about er their rise to fame I guess. I sort of think they're telling, pretty much, a horror story.

"Oh my god
I have the remedy for love
I struck the glass and broke the bones inside my fist but I'm ok
I cannot change you, you'll never change
I never would expect to break this in the end"

The remedy for love, being death. He is frustrated by said person, possibley for not loving him back..

The a short version of what I think it's about is:

He decides to end the pain due to the relationship by killing himself and his girlfriend. Drives the car off the road and into the water, killing them both.

"The blinding light beaming from your eyes our desire
Life has died yet we're still alive and down below"

I think it refers to them being in hell. However I sincerely hope that this whole song is not about the apocalypse from the bible (or anything else from the bible for that matter) or I will most disappointed.
