This song is my song to San Francisco. LOL. I mean this obviously isn't what Bowie means but... here is what I mean.. Its almost ironic to have a personal feeling on a song that "has nothing to do with you, if you can grasp it" The Vacuum created by the arrival of freedom- San Francisco is most liberal place I have ever been, and it feels like a vacuum, no gravity, no fall. A lot of people hover there, weightless. there are many possibilities the city has to offer. But its got nothing to do with you, if one can grasp it... Thats the feeling I get from citires, It makes you realize how many people are out there. And the vacuum exsists with or without you. A series of shocks.... Earthquakes Sneakers fall apart, The hills in that city eat your shoes if you live and walk there every day. Earth keeps on rolling, Witnesses falling... Up the hill backwards, you see people walking uphill backwards because its so steep. I think its a metaphor for the a hard climb or difficult situation and approaching it from exactly the most backwards way. But sometimes its the easier way, like climbing those hills in SF. The rest of the song describes the people there, to me anyway. The people who want to be noticed. The pretensive-ness of people would rather be idols than real. The corporate greed, the zombies who work in that fucked up financial district. Its the death of love alright. But its not a personal attack on me, i guess. Its got nothing to do with me, if one can grasp it. Those people working for the man there are just walking up the hill backwards, because its easier. The advertising, the skyscrapers, the business men in suits... Are more like Idols, than realities. Music is wonderful in its abilities to be so personal. |

| I always thought it was about a stripper too. Especially since someone said the glass slipper is a club in Boston. I think if the prince hadn't picked Cinderella maybe the strip club would be where she ends up. Its really sad. | Its about doing drugs with your lover. The first kiss is literal and metaphorical of the first rush, the best high. I see the lines meaning cutting up lines for each other and also meaning the lines and boundaries you cross as the relationship with drugs and your partner declines. It gets scary sometimes in love and drugs and you try to draw lines to keep each other safe. Its a metaphor i think between getting high and the rush of love. The ending is the best . I think its the high of the song. It sounds all very heroin induced | |

I personally think its about a woman whose in love with a man who uses her for sex, but she loves him and enjoys thinking even for fleeting moments that he has mutual feelings. "i volunteer my soul for murder" ... i interpret as her knowing and acknowledging that he is gonna break her into pieces. but she can't stop. "i'd like to take you to a place i know, my blackhearted" meaning she'd like him to experience how she feels it has the sound of a woman obsessed. |

this reminds me of certain married fling i had once, and how many times he said to me "why don't you cone over tonight?" and was always wanting to control my life outside him. especially about the "you wanna live freely..." because he used to critisize about me using drugs, while he drank as much as anyone and got his thrills by "playing" his wife. "you best step off the gas, girl..." feels like the good advice i gave myself in beginning that i obviously didn't listen to. basically the story ends that he can just "fuck off and die..." This is just what the song makes me think about. idk. i don't think it was written about cheating bastards in particular, just people who you generally can't take anymore that at one point in time could have cared about. |

I think its about watching your lover be a hot mess on drugs and being out of control. Especially the line about "i'm always right, I'm always wrong" It feels like that when the person you love is always contradicting herself saying she knows she's out of control but denying it the next time you confront her about it. I'm nothing if I'm not with you sounds like it has a double meaning to it. It could be that her love is so intense that she feels like she could never be without this person but it also sounds like I mean nothing to you when I'm not there and you don't consider how your actions make me feel. Around This world will I be enough? maybe enough for you to change? It just sounds like She's falling out of love with this person. |

I never heard but iI absloutely love the lyrics. and sometimes i just wanna bury my head in a hole tell me do you have the kind of touch that can console? i wanna hold my hands over my eyes during the scary scenes tell me will you stay with me at night and stand guard over my dreams? will you stand guard over my dreams? will you stand guard over my dreams? "will you stand over my drean" reads absloutely haunting but I think this song is alot about ignorance and pretending not to know what you know is gonna happen. Especially the bit about burying her head in a hole and covering her eyes during scary scenes. It sound like she wants this person to step in and do the opposite of what she knows they'll do. I mean there's a reason why she left this person in the first place. but thats the thing that's so hard about relationships. Being "thirsty" for that person even after things don't work out. |

So.. going along with Amanda's aches and pains and such.. Someone mentioned they thought it was about anorexia/bulimia. Has anyone considered that maybe its about what could cause such aches and pains in others (or herself I'd prefer to think If its about anorexia/bulimia, its not autobiogrtaphical) ? I know from personal.. uh.. "research" that with anorexia/bulimia you physically ache and feel torn down because of not only your mind but also because your body is tearing itself apart. maybe I'm trying to hard to make the song personally for me but "trading in my talents by the mouthful" seems like its related to an eting disorder. Leaning on the toilet staring at the floor while purging "Getting too familar with the floor" Hate to break it too you but its out of my control... She can't control her problem anymore and if she could handle it better she would. Not only handle the disorder better but handle herself too. Anoretics often hear about losing control within themselves. They strive towards perfection. The next couple of lines to me sound like just dealing with how its affecting her body, especially the "Cut a piece thats bite size" if you're purging your lips are cracked dry and sore, your throat is swollen and its hurt to get food down if its not chewed and cut right. Cut a piece thats bite sized could have the meaning too that she's chewing so its easier to digest and therefore, easier for her body to burn anda Aha! not fat. Straight line... Not being able to walk straight, painfully dizzy. and the incomprehensible stuff in the middle there reminds me of the book "Wasted" when she passes out from not eating and people trying to get her help or up the stairs. Gravity.. could have the meaning that the scale keeps going down, and others are lucky because they don't have to hurt like her to be skinny. The thin and fat side thing is really how some disordered people think too. I used to be able to crowd watch for hours to see whose in what catergory and who was smaller than I. Meh... probably not.. but its a though |
