David Bowie – It Ain't Easy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
No, his name was Ron Davies, not Ray. Brilliant musician and songwriter. He passed away in 2003. |
Galt Aureus – Is There Anyone Left? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The beginning music sounds majestic and timeless. My interpretation is that it's about a woman who waited on a man she loved. Maybe they were former lovers and he left her for someone else, or maybe they were friends and she was waiting for him to see that she loved him. Either way, she was in love with him and waited a long time for him to come to that realization and be with her. Eventually, it seems like she either kills herself or comes close to it. He starts to understand that she's been there all along, waiting for him. He says that if he finds that she's left, he's going to leave, too. |
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's – German Motor Car Lyrics | 15 years ago |
sorry for insulting it. there's on "delete" on here. |
The Cardigans – Hanging Around Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it seems like people say "there's nothing more to say about it" when they're uncomfortable with not understanding something. it's irritating. this song is based off of repulsion, the 1965 movie directed by roman polanski. |
The Cranberries – This Is The Day Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It does start out by saying "I never had a friend like you," but I think it's deeper than it seems. "These thoughts, they circle in my mind This is the day The demons I can't leave behind This is the day" She's struggling to get rid of the demons that follow her (maybe addiction, anger, lust, and other sins). When she says "This is the day," maybe she's talking about a day of salvation. She has another song called "Salvation" and in her song "Just my Imagination" she says, "I have always kept my faith in love/ it's the greatest thing from the man above" so she's obviously spiritual. "Don't be insecure I'll be at your door I will always be there for you" This reminds me of what Christ said to the church in Revelation 3:20, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." Then she goes on to sing "Faith will save you" over and over again, not "They will save you." She says "stay" several times, too, possibly telling us to stay in the faith. "Pour forth thy grace into my mind This is the day Pour forth thy grace, thou art Divine This is the day" Here the meaning becomes a lot more obvious. She's asking for the grace of God, saying this is the day of salvation. "But the wind might change I will still remain I will still be here But the wind might change I will still remain I will always be there for you" God won't leave you. Stay in the faith. |
mewithoutYou – Leaf Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"If you fail to see a problem, which I find hard to believe, Or if you're hanging on from branches licking honey from the leaves;" This part about licking honey from the leaves while hanging from a branch always seemed familiar, like I had read something about it. It seems to be from page 31 of Leo Tolstoy's autobiography, MY CONFESSION: "Thus do I cling to the branch of life, knowing that the dragon of death inevitably awaits me, ready to tear me to pieces, and I cannot understand why such tortures have fallen to my lot. I also strive to suck the honey which once comforted me, but it palls on my palate, while the white mouse and the black, day and night, gnaw through the branch to which I cling. I see the dragon too plainly, and the honey is no longer sweet. I see the dragon, from which there is no escape, and the mice, and I cannot turn my eyes away from them. It is no fable, but a living, undeniable truth, to be understood of all men. The former delusion of happiness in life which hid from me the horror of the dragon, no longer deceives me." I think that this is all too true. I hope that Jesus will refute that part about "from which there is no escape." |
Björk – Joga Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think I figured out what she's singing at the end that's so difficult to understand: "I still don't care." Then again, it might be something in Icelandic. But it sounds a lot like "I still don't care, I still don't care," etc. |
Björk – Pagan Poetry Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is the single most moving song I have ever heard. The part where she sings, "And he makes me want to hand myself over" gives me a supernatural feeling that I can't fully explain. It's like something unreal. The entire song is absolutely beautiful. It reaches in, grabs those bits of raw truth in me, and rips them out into plain sight. |
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's – German Motor Car Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I heard a live performance of this, and I'm very much sick of pompous indie music. |
John Frusciante – Chances Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I was reading about how free will might not exist, and this song has taken on a new meaning for me. |
Björk – Hyperballad Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I know this is a weird outlook, and I'm sure this isn't what the song means, but I was lying in my bed and thought about it this way. Maybe she's a depressed woman who suffers suicidal thoughts. The song could be about being in a dream. The top of the mountain could be her head, and throwing things off might symbolize getting rid of self-destructive thoughts. After cleansing herself of these negative desires (car parts, bottles, cutlery can all be sharp and destructive), she's able to feel safe being in her own mind throughout the day. She needs to sleep, dream, and purge the dark things that make her a danger to herself throughout the day. Again, I'm sure this isn't what it means, but it just popped into my head today. |
Destiny's Child – Now That She's Gone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
So I think what she's saying here is that even though his new girlfriend left him, she'll always be there for him. I like the fact that she's not vindictive and arrogant, but rather extends herself to her hurting ex-boyfriend by offering her love once again. If only more people had this kind of enduring, selfless love. . . |
Björk – 5 Years Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I know it doesn't fit with the song, but "show me your palms" makes me think of palm readings. |
Billy Joel – The River Of Dreams Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"In the middle of the night" might be a metaphor for the uncertainty and mystery (since we can't see in the dark) of life and its purpose, meaning, or point. |
Billy Joel – The River Of Dreams Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"We all end in the ocean We all start in the streams" While after we're born we live in a way that feels independent (streams apart from one another), we are all flowing to the same deadly fate (the ocean), where we'll come together not as individuals, but as a collective mass callled "humanity". "We're all carried along By the river of dreams In the middle of the night" Dreams and hopes for the future are what propel us into the future, much like a river's current keeps things moving. If we were apathetic and hopeless, life would feel meaningless (if we chose to live at all). |
Janis Joplin – Women Is Losers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
*lightly; *their Not sure how much sleep I've had lately. |
Janis Joplin – Women Is Losers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Aerynn: "I don't think she meant for it to be taken very seriously. I don't think she even related to most women. She mostly hung out with guys and lead a lifestyle that didn't fit into her childhood ideal of womanhood." Did the fact that she led a lifestyle that didn't fit into her childhood ideal of womanhood not tip you off to the obvious feminist viewpoint of this song? It's not something to be taken likely, and she obviously relates a bit more to women (and thir oppression) than you're capable of realizing. |
Zero 7 – Distractions Lyrics | 16 years ago |
If you fail to see sarcasm in "Make Miss me Mrs. You", then you're dense. |
Dolly Parton – I Will Always Love You Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is written from the point of view of someone who's capable of genuine love. She realizes that she is not the best fit for her lover, and makes a sacrifice for his happiness. This kind of transcendental love is very rare. |
Mayday Parade – Miserable at Best Lyrics | 16 years ago |
bucboy33: It does say "my girl", but unless there's incest going on, this is by no means about a father giving away his daughter. |
John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yes it is sexism. It's called "benevolent sexism" and is blatantly obvious. |
John Frusciante – The Mirror Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this has a lot to do with feeling depersonalized or detached from one's body. He's not his physical self - he's what's behind that shell. |
John Frusciante – A Doubt Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I could be way off as to his meaning, but here's what it's meant for me: "Everyone speaks at the same time" 1. It could be that we don't listen to each other, but talk at the same time. We're not interested in communicating, only driving home our points and perceptions. 2. It could be that speaking is actually existing, and everyone alive is speaking simultaneously. Maybe it's chaotic. "Everyone wonders 'Who am I?'" We're all actors in our own movies. We sell pieces of our invented to each person we meet, tailoring them to fit each new situation. None of us knows who we are, only who we're accustomed at pretending to be. "It'd be sad to blow through time" It would be sad to waste this one chance we have at living. "We never go through the sky" We're trapped here in this cage called Earth. We don't transcend this trap. "We never know when to die" We're not sure there's a point to life, and therefore don't know when to cease living. Is there something we should wait around for? Does another year make a difference? "Lean in to walk We dreamed up tonight" Our lives are just long dreams. They're whatever our mind makes the out to be. It's unreal. "We all choose to live life We confuse how with why" We choose life each day we're alive, having not yet decided to die. We confuse our images, our jobs, our possessions, and other "hows" of our existences with the "why", or reason, that we live. "Everyday is lost as it goes by These moments don't compute" Today passes and becomes the past. It's lost as it goes by, becoming illusions. Nothing computes, or makes logical sense. "And I wind up next to you All all that I need is a doubt That's all one that feeds the mouth One simple means is to leave it by the door" I'm a little lost here (ironically, as the song is called "A Doubt"). Anyway, the only thing I can gather from this is that he needs a doubt (hope of something, maybe?) that can feed him (maybe feed him a reason to live). This "food" being left by the door reminds me of people who lock themselves in rooms (due to mental breakdowns, depression, etc.) and won't come out. Food's left by their door (in this case, hope, or "a doubt" is left by his door). Maybe it's left by the person he finds himself next to. Sorry if this is way, way off. "One time to play is the time you play for" This one life is the one you're living for. "And you never set a limit" Why limit it, this being your only chance? "Lean in to walk There's nothing missing from life" Life, with its joys and sorrows, contains everything we need to be fulfilled. Why live for ideals never attained when the life in front of you has everything you've ever needed? "Don't ever set a limit." Again, live this one life as fully as you can. Don't restrict yourself, because this is all you have. |
Will Smith – Wild Wild West Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think the GBs are Ghostbusters, because he says, "Who ya gonna call?" and that's how the old ghostbusters song went ("Who ya gonna call?" ... "Ghostbusters!"). |
Fleming and John – Ugly Girl Lyrics | 16 years ago |
She sounds like the ugly one - an ugly heart. |
Neil Young – The Loner Lyrics | 16 years ago |
(omit "a") |
Neil Young – The Loner Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The user jehosefat is far from intelligent. The loner isn't "angry at women" nor is he a "psycho killer dentist". The man in this song is described as a someone who isn't fully himself. Like a fox, he operates slightly predatorily, in that he observes and figures out others. Arranging feelings and changing his tone and diction, this man makes sure he stays at a distance from other people. It's possible that the loner in this song wasn't one until the woman who understood him took off, but the notion that only one person had the ability to tap into his mind makes this seem unlikely. Don't try to be what this man needs, and don't take pity on him, just leave him alone. He just wants solitude. |
The Notwist – This Room Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Lately this song has meant something a little different to me than it used to mean. Looking at the stars and realizing they're all other suns and that we're incomprehensibly small made me analyze this song a bit more. I sometimes feel like humans are locked in a room together. The sky with its clouds and stars and infinite space is our peephole. We might be able to think, say, and do all sorts of things here in this "room", and science might teach us much more about what we can see through the peephole, but it doesn't make any difference - we'll never leave this room. |
The Cranberries – Analyse Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know" - Ernest Hemingway To know that nothing has a point, to realize the futility of the daily existence of humans, to "overanalyze" in general, is to lose the sense of wonder and freedom (ignorance) that's present in most childhoods. I've been told many times to stop "overanalyzing" things. I wasn't overanalyzing; I was simply stopping every so often to think about my life and the motives behind thoughts and actions. People are terrified of thought, mostly because it disrupts the comfort of their carefree ignorance. |
The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics | 16 years ago |
C'mon, this song is not about a literal war. Why does everyone take everyone's lyrics so bluntly? "In your head" is a reoccuring line and rules out the possibility of this song being utterly literal. IN YOUR HEAD, they're still fighting IN YOUR HEAD, they are dying Why add "in your head" if it's only describing war? Look up the definition of "zombie", and tell me this song has nothing to do with mental instability. |
Beck – Loser Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's supposed to be "buckshot", not "buckshy"; I don't even think buckshy is a word. Buckshot is a type of ammunition that can be used in double-barreled shotguns. A double-barreled shotgun loaded with buckshot is especially powerful and succeeds at obliterating the head during homicide or suicide. You don't want to try to kill yourself with a little pistol, as you'll probably just blow off your face and end up a vegetable in some hospital. |
John Frusciante – Dying Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song hits close to home. It's definitely not "show a bit of your love". I'm not going to guarantee that it's "it's sure been a full life," but it's a heck of a lot closer than the former. |
John Frusciante – Chances Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"This is the time to die I'm not someone on whom to rely Chances come and chances go This is letting go" He's letting go of a solid identity, consistency, and obligations (you can't rely on him). "I feel the tightening of the dawn The creation of something I've sung No-one goes back 'cause they're all there Are you everywhere" He feels the approach of what is inevitable. He's at all places at once. He's at the point in time when he wrote the song, and he's at the point when it's being sung. You cannot go back in time, because you're already back in time; it is fluid. "Becoming who you think you are In order to do your part In the multi-dimensional scheme You'll know what I mean" In order to take part "normally" in our trivial existences, we must fool ourselves, inflate our egos, and feel as though what we are doing has a purpose. You have to invent a persona in order to function in a productive manner without losing your mind. If you were to consider all dimensions - if you were to stop typing at the office for a moment and stare into the sky, at once realizing that you can never really realize anything, that everything is meaningless - you're certainly not a good employee/member of society. You must become an actor, both to others and to yourself. "I'm almost where I'll never be This cutting off of fate like a string A line that falls to the floor And I'm not me anymore" Is he almost to the point of suicide - either that of the body, or just of the mind? I'm not really sure about anything in this song, but this is what it's said to me. |
Sting – King Of Pain Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It must have chopped off my comment on this part: "There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall There's a blue whale beached by a springtide's ebb There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web" All of the things listed are trapped in conditions from which they can't escape, much like Sting is trapped in the condition of pain. |
Sting – King Of Pain Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"There's a little black spot on the sun today That's my soul up there" I think this is illustrating the darkness of his soul in the midst of other people's happiness (the black spot's his soul, and the sun is the joy from which it stands apart). "There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall There's a blue whale beached by a springtide's ebb There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web" "I guess I always thought you could end this reign But it's my destiny to be the king of pain" He thought this particular person could end his "reign" as the "king of pain" (i.e. he had hoped this person could make him happy, or at least take away his sorrow). I think that the reason "King of Pain" is an ironic title is because when we think of kings (regal, ruling, and basically together), we do not associate them with negative experiences. Kings are praised, exalted, and sleep on "golden bed[s]", as Sting has put it. To be king of something horrible, like pain, is ironic. |
Ani DiFranco – What If No One's Watching? Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I was a kid lying in my bed one night (before this song was released, I'm sure), and had just finished praying. I was a practicing Christian throughout my childhood, but this particular night was different. I thought hard about what I had just done (knelt and talked to myself), and got a little freaked out. I thought, as Difranco put it, "What if God is just an idea someone put in your head?" After moving through the initial shock of it, I felt like someone had just unlocked the door to a cage I'd built around myself... it was the most freeing thing I've ever felt, and she captures it in this song. |
Madonna – Like a Virgin Lyrics | 16 years ago |
*Reservoir ... thanks for the edit option, songmeanings.net. |
Madonna – Like a Virgin Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's not about big dicks, period. There are plenty of songs that can be looked at several ways, but this song doesn't have anything to do with dicks. It's about someone who's been around the block a few times, and is made (somehow) to feel new again. The explanation in Resevoir Dogs is humorous, and that's well and good, but it's not accurate. |
Big Brother & The Holding Company – Piece of My Heart Lyrics | 16 years ago |
If she had been a man, there would be 221 rather than 21 comments. Period. |
The White Stripes – Passive Manipulation Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Father = dominant male, someone to obey, what he says is law, he knows what's best Lover = someone who should not dominate, but should share, someone who should compromise rather than dictate This song is sung by her because she's a woman. It's a message to other women to stand up for themselves, and never to confuse childhood obedience to fathers with obeying lovers. Grown women should not allow themselves to be treated like children by men. Rather, they should rise to the occasion of being a lover - someone who shares equally in decision making and has a mind of her own. |
The Notwist – This Room Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I see the room not just as the moment, but as the condition of life in general. We're stuck in this existence, one that can't be anything other than what it is. We're stuck in this life, trapped in the human condition, in a body that is dying. |
Fugazi – Waiting Room Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'm going to give this a shot, but I'm not sure it's even close. "I am a patient boy" seems to have a double meaning (he's a patient in a hospital [in the waiting room of life], but also has patience to wait for a better day). The "waiting room" seems to be most people's lives, in which they simply exist rather than live. It follows the "patient" metaphor. People are simply waiting around to die, doing nothing to change their situations. "Sitting outside of town Everybody's always down" Not wanting the news and "sitting outside of town" draw him up to be an outsider, someone who's looking in on and observing the world. "But I don't sit by idly I'm planning a big surprise I'm gonna fight for what I want to be I won't make the same mistakes Because I know how much time that wastes Function is the key" It's fine if everyone else wants to be a mindless drone, but he's got ambition and the courage to "get up", or pursue his dreams. It's probably way off, but there didn't seem to be many previous stabs at the meaning, so I gave it a shot. |
Tupac Shakur – Keep Ya Head Up Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"And since a man can't make one He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one" I'm so glad this man lived long enough to at least sing that line. I want to hug him. |
John Mayer – Waiting on the World to Change Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Mayer is a very smug individual. He insinuates that he's got everything figured out, and will therefore sit back and wait for the world to change. Why doesn't he change the world, rather than arrogantly sitting back and assuming he's helpless. "it's not that we don't care, we just know that the fight ain't fair so we keep on waiting waiting on the world to change" Yes, it's not that they don't care, they've simply given up because the fight isn't fair. Give me a break. |
Tom Waits – Chocolate Jesus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is amazingly sarcastic and brilliant. It's very obviously a stab at religious nuts who contradict themselves and hold large egos. "I know Jesus loves me Maybe just a little bit more" - This is awesome. |
Van Morrison – Cleaning Windows Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I like that Van says the smell of the bakery "got in his nose", rather than just saying he smelled something. I agree that it's about his contentedness simply doing a menial job (cleaning windows) and enjoying music. |
Tori Amos – Blood Roses Lyrics | 16 years ago |
For some reason, it sounds like "meal" rather than "meat". Chickens eat meal, not meat. |
John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'm sure this comment will crush the fairytale outlooks of many a fellow listener. However, I feel that this must be said. This song represents what is called "benevolent sexism", and I'm surprised at how this has managed to escape so many people who have left a comment. Benevolent sexism seems less harmful than outright hostile sexism, but can be just as bad for equality in the long run. Let's start here: "so fathers be good to your daughters, daughters will love like you do, girls become lovers who turn into mothers so mothers be good to your daughters too." This assumes women are destined to turn into mothers, when not all of them choose this path. It follows the incorrect view that all women are motherly. Now, this part makes me sick: "boys you can break find out how much they can take boys will be strong and boys soldier on but boys would be gone without warmth of a woman's good good heart" Ok, boys you can break? They're strong, tough, and without emotion? How ridiculous can Mayer get here? Gender is much more flexible than was once thought, and it's proven that boys too can break. The "warmth of a woman's good, good heart"? This view of women as pure, motherly, and do-no-wrong slides past many people because it doesn't seem as outright sexist as certain other things. To assume a woman is this eternally caring, emotional being is condescending, regardless of how sweetly Mayer lets it slip from his lips. I've saved the best for last: "on behalf of every man looking out for every girl you are the god and the weight of her world" What? The GOD and the weight of her world? ... GOD? I hope someone sees the insanity of this besides just me. Research benevolent sexism and stop praising Mayer's ignorance. Maybe I should stop worrying my pretty little head and go sew something nice. |
