The Smashing Pumpkins – I Am One Lyrics 16 years ago
Similar to the thoughts by duo above, but what if this song is written from the perspective of Satan? He's saying that he is one entity, as opposed to the trinity of God, the Son and the Holy Ghost. He's essentially bragging (as Satan) that the listener can try to find a messiah, but inevitably they're just going to burn in his hell. Many of the other lyrics flow in the same line of thought (down, down... am I as I seem, etc...). Just a notion...

Depeche Mode – Any Second Now (Voices) Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it's one of DM's most beautiful songs. I think the lyrics above have a slight error, tho... instead of "when the colours move apart" I'd always thought it was "when the covers move apart." The inference is that she's getting out of bed and he's wondering if she would really rather still be there with him.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Name Lyrics 16 years ago
It's funny because I think the band itself started to hate this song, or at least get tired of it. They had already toured for this album and were almost done when "Name" made it big. Prior to that, it was simply a regular part of the set. After it hit the radio, they suddenly had to revamp their tour to support the song's success. Suddenly it became the feature song and was typically played in the first encore. As time went on and they became less enamored (bored?) of the song, it worked it's way to the beginning of the set. I even saw them play it as the very first song of the show. After it was over, Johnny said something off the cuff about how all the posers could leave so the real fans could have fun (which at the time meant mosh).

The Goo Goo Dolls – Only One Lyrics 16 years ago
When the album came out, they toured for something like a year and a half. They were more or less done touring for the album when "Name" hit and they had to go out and tour again to support the song. Anyway, on one of their passes through, they had an opening band called the "Smoking Popes." Not sure if John was annoyed with them or not, but he definitely changed the line near the end of the song to "ain't no Smoking Pope singer" that night.

The Goo Goo Dolls – James Dean Lyrics 16 years ago
I'd always thought of the song as pretty much a joke song by GGD. You spend the first 99% of the song feeling for the main character who is down in the dumps and just wants to live the life of his idol. I mean, back in the day, James Dean pretty much defined "coolness." So they get you feeling sad and sorry and then bam, the joke comes in at the very end. Back in their early days, the would play it now and then. After "Name" broke them, they suddenly had to get careful about being a little more politically correct. I remember being at a concert when they played it and at the very end John just said "then you go and you tell me that you found out... no I can't say it" and he started laughing. Then he finished the last line and then that was it. Never saw them play the song live again.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Jenny 867-5309 (Tommy Tutone cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
WAY back in the day, they used to play this song live quite frequently. Occasionally they used to even pull members of the crowd up on stage to sing it for them, if they knew the lyrics. As long as I'm showing my age, they used to also play "King of the Road" live (or Robbie would) to pass the time while John changed broken guitar strings. Pretty hysterical thinking back on the fact that a mosh-pit would be put on hold so everyone (usually the whole crowd would sing along) could sing a song written decades before.
