i meant to say the baby was never anything that existed outside of a fantasy of her future with someone. like a representation of a happiness and new life that could have been had their love lasted.

i don't think this is about abortion.... i don't even really see how people think it is.

as meredith said, it's more about a child that didn't happen as a result of choices she made in her life to "close that door" , it's thinking of what could have been... had different paths been chosen.

her and her ex lover went down a path that lead to them being apart, not together, and things did not work in the way she wanted them to. so no baby.

Ray LaMontagne – Lesson Learned Lyrics 14 years ago
i get the feeling he's in a new relationship but still in love with someone from the past. the "cheating" everyone is describing is more of an emotional cheating because he still feels faithful to his lost love, but has been playing out love in the new relationship even though he doesn't feel it. and now the girl finds out (even though she knew from the start he had his heart broken) that he doesn't really love her, and now she's heart broken. but he can't feel sorry for her because he's heart broken too. something like that...

"clear the room! there's a fire, a fire, a fire
get going, and I'm going to be right behind you
and if the love of a woman or two, dear,
couldn't move you to such heights, then all I can do
is do, my darling, right by you "

actually another way i picture this is i can see her realizing the doom of their relationship and herself in it. and w/ the fire saying GO! now is your chance to get away from this! I WILL BE BEHIND YOU!! as if it is their chance to both escape (the situation/relationship to be over forever).

though, it makes me feel like she stays behind and burns alone. :(!!

Joanna Newsom – Only Skin Lyrics 15 years ago
here is my interpretation: soulmates that can't really be together is the best way to describe it as someone else put it. a relationship that is an emotional rollercoaster and inner struggle between both of them.

the war described at the beginning - this is more of a war her love is facing within himself, after a lost love.
the straining & squinting to see the retreat, happens when he sees a possibility of a new love (her).

he soaked up this chance, in doing so waking her up from her own sleeping heart.
(they both were broken before they met each other.)

they both felt alive again.

the plague of the greasy black engines gone east - i believe represents his last relationship that broke him. now that he met her, he can move on from that, but he's now left to explain his brokeness over his lost love - to her. she is left w/ the pieces.

they're now experiencing the fresh, new love. but he's running to it w/ his hands in his pockets, not arms wide open (because he is that damaged from the past - catching him a small death). but they're both experiencing the new love very deeply, i believe they have trouble connecting to it the way they want to. she wants to let him know that it's over this is something new, and safe. the dark dream is over... she wants to be his happiness.

the firebreather beneath the clover - when something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
their love seemed to good to be true! she felt lucky to find him, and he probably felt the same. but beneath it, was the firebreather to ruin it. something evil keeping them from a real happiness with each other. i think this was more an experience on her end, he was not what he seemed. the love wasn't what she originally thought it would be (due to his damage). she sees the disappointment, and is crushed.
beneath that, theres cold clay. you can't make cold clay love you and give you what you need. it can't grow or be molded into what you need. it is what it is, forever. and this is the cycle of their relationship.
amazing love -> hurt, pain -> coldness.

the toothless hound-dog choking on a feather, i take this as meaning - they can't change what they want to change. it's just stuck this way. he may be trying to cough up that feather, but just keeps choking on it, repeating this cycle. unable to really love the way he needs to!

she wants to fix it. she wants to heal him so they can find happiness together, and i think her love becomes more about him than her own needs. finding the herb for him , applying it gently to the love he lent her (this makes it sound like she knows her love is borrowed and he might still be in love w/ the previous girl that keeps them from really being able to experience things fully together -- or just being appreciative of him loving her at all.)

when the water starts to get a little rough, she can sense that he can't do what needs to be done to make it work.
instead, this is when he presses back on her, he sinks into his dark crib.

rowing along, through the flow of their relationship, she may know it's time to move on, but still "hear's his song before her heart had time to hush it" - she just is in love with him even if she knows better.
and then, the possibilities again. the fresh fruit being opened...

the fire, darkness moves away.
she questions why he would say she was the last one. and yet put her through this.

scraping your knee - obviously nothing to cry over compared to a broken heart and a damaged soul.

when she cuts his hair, leaving the birds the trimmings - this makes her the happiest women because i think the hair is representing his strength & stubbornness. when he can open up to her, and love her.

the shallow water reaching as far as she can see, knee deep , trudging along in her own tears.... she knows what is the relationship is and it makes her sad. she's hearing herself say to hold on through the night (the bad) and that things will get better.

she has candy in her pockets that are weighing her down. his LOVE weighs her down, she has to make all of the effort. she knows of the good in their relationship, but is the one who has to do the work and struggle for the both of them.
i think the next line about the common folk condemning what it is she does, to keep him warm - makes me think of a codependent/abusive relationship , and her friends are telling her he is no good, and this relationship hurts her, but she loves him so deeply, she deals with the pain to experience the good. and thinks of this as part of "being a woman" to be strong, and loving toward the man she loves and deal with it.

she explains it as being ok to herself in the next part, because without her, he's up on the mountain side clambering, groping blindly, hungry for anything! she's telling herself he NEEDS her. but , this is also when she realizes again that this is bad!! and he has done something bad.

but she once again can see blossoms breaking - after the rain. and tells herself - he will be back again. the good will be back. she can't escape this she's in too deep.
she's tried to "wash the spiders" down the drain, but he keeps dangling there , she loves him too much.
she is trying to tell herself the relationship is dead, and done.
be a woman! be strong..

but then it goes back. they felt the spray of the waves - they knew better this time to start things up again. they know the hurt they cause each other. but they decide to stay, trying again. they love each other! i think they both are aware of his issues w/ loving (or some kind of mental issues) and thats what the next line is about. like, the know through it all they still love each other so they are willing to deal with any pain that comes with the relationship. even if it means drowning themselves in the process.

this is them reconnecting. she knows that it is messed up, but she has lost her heart to him.

she wants the goodness of him to stay, she wants the love. this is where the bad of their relationship comes up again. i think the pain he causes her, is real deep pain. the awfully real gun. he can't help but hurt her. he points that gun at her (emotionally, psychologically..), essentially killing the relationship.

she tries to show him there is nothing to gain by doing that.

then goes into her dream of the happiness they COULD be sharing together. if he wasn't the way he is.

on the patio, etc. scenes of them sharing a happy life together. in her mind, they are forever happy. this is their true love that can't be. they will have everything they want. they have each other, hand in hand. the bird doesn't even die. this is the version of their relationship that can't exist in real life, but i believe they both experience in their hearts.

then it cuts back to reality of them again. and how their relationship is always them stuck in her doorway, but he never really comes in. yet when he comes back to her she is alive, but struggling with her emotions. because she loves him deeply, but knows it can't really be - she will never be the same because of having met him and experiencing this. part of both of them has died by not being able to make this work.

but she knows deep , deep down, what really is there between the two of them. real love. it just can't be experienced and reached in reality.

she has given all of herself to him. the cupboards are empty, cold. she is experiencing the pain of their unreachable love. which is the reality of the situation. he isn't giving her anything she needs. (where in her other version of them, the cupboards would be stocked, full of provision - etc.) i think she feels like she can't be what he wants. and he sucks on the cherry stone that is her, starving her as a person, emotionally. he sucks the energy out of her soul. thinking he can just bury it (their love, her) and it wil grow back later , and will be better and stronger when up grows the cherry tree (but it doesn't really work like that).

then she questions what happens next? and still all he can do (make her) is something that isn't enough - and a harsh reminder of his past love. i don't think he's literally giving some "trinket" that reminds her of his ex - but i think its her way of saying that the relationship is so broken, everything he has done, anything that he does for her now will just be a reminder that he just doesn't love her as much as he loved "the woman who has gone west" ... he has essentially set up the relationship for failure. he can't give her the love she needs.

she feels like she is in this alone. yet is willing to crawl to him to stroke his sweet head, she loves him so much. she is connected to him eternally. she loves him more than anything.

i think they then connect again in a good way. and she wants them to escape the fire, together. she will be with him, behind him.

the last line is that if he couldn't have been right to his ex that he truly loved - who left him - and he can't be good to her, who he loves and also truly loves him and wants to stay with him. then all she can do, is right by him (because he is incapable love).

or something like that...

Jimmy Eat World – Night Drive Lyrics 16 years ago
it's a dark love song about an addictive relationship.
the guy is an asshole and he knows it. they want to love each other but it doesn't work. it is an unhealthy relationship.

he wants to try to do things right, and for things to work. they both do. but knows better that it can't happen the way she wants it.

he feels bad, because he's a jerk and has done shitty things to her.
"pour us a road, we'll both drink and drive" she lets things continue, rather than just being done with him, she "pours the road" as in , starts things up and gets the idea of them being together , which leads to him going along with it all... and they get caught up in things, that is the role she plays in the addiction. she starts it up because she loves him even though she knows better, he's emotionally/psychologically abusive. they can't really follow that road she "pours" (happiness together) , hence the "drinking and driving" they both get wrapped up in fantasy land pretending it can work.

they have a strong sexual chemistry. he can take her cheap shots because he knows he deserves them, and just wants to enjoy the good between them while it lasts. he knows it won't last though.

the "lips go dry" is probably kind of in reference to her realizing things just aren't right because of all the things he's done to her. and the "wine going to her head" is like him saying she is crazy to be doing this and loving him after everything shitty he has done to her.

she wants to put blame on him, but he puts it right back on her because no matter what, he can always say "you asked for it" basically - because she is still with him. she keeps starting it all back up again. addicted. so to him she deserves what she gets and is just as destructive by participating in an unhealthy relationship.

he wants the love they're sharing in that moment to last. and that in the moments like this, only they know the passion they share. no one else would understand their craziness. to everyone else its just an unhealthy relationship. but they love they share in these moments is inexplainable , only they really understand.

he knows the "up" stage in the relationship isn't going to last because their relationship is an emotional rollercoaster. this moment isn't going to last. she's ticking because he knows any moment she'll come to her senses once again and want to leave, she resents him, she can't handle the emotional and psyhological abuse of being in a relationship with someone dark like him.

the darkest part of the song to me is him saying "your ticking makes my blood move" - getting her angry and upset IS WHAT HE LIKES. he's an asshole, but he can't help it.

be happy you get what you do - probably means this for both of them. he's an asshole so this is probably showing his narcissism here. but i think it's also him saying it to himself, because he knows he's lucky to get anything at all from her.

"make him notice with both fists, cause quitting alone with never make you dry" - not sure what this means exactly. but i think it means if she tries to end the relationship, it doesn't work. "get you dry" like not being addicted to alcohol, but being addicted to EACH OTHER. she can't quit him on her own, she has to get him angry enough to want nothing to do with her. because if she keeps coming back, he will keep allowing it to continue. so they have to quit together for it to really end the addiction.

and he knows this is going to happen so he wants her to give him everything she has got.
i think this means both that he wants to enjoy the loving moments they have while it lasts. but also to "let him have it" like he deserves her fighting back, he WANTS her to fight back. she's taken too much from him... his arrogance will make him abuse her love. he loves her but they can't be together because he hurts her.

Lisa Loeb – Stay (I Missed You) Lyrics 16 years ago
i think it is about an unhealthy relationship, the guy doesn't treat her well. he's in control and knows it, they fight a lot, he puts her down, etc. thinking she will never leave him (until he decides he is done with her).
she takes because she thinks she is strong and can handle it she loves him, and that its her choice to be with him.
they argue a lot, whenever she confronts him about him not treating her well he tries to turn it around like she only hears the negative (making it like that is what she wants to hear) and manipulate her into staying by convincing her he really cares. and that it is her with the problem.
she prob goes back and forth a lot , and every time she tries to leave she misses him and goes back. making him the right one... and she doesn't like that he really is in control.
he wants her to stay with him because he likes being in control of her, but he can't treat her well even if he does care for her he doesnt respect her.
at the end of the song , she leaves him. this time when he says "stay" , she doesn't want to hear it. the last line is like rubbing it in his face "you say i only hear what i want to... well i'm not hearing that, i know better, i'm not letting you control me anymore."

Mazzy Star – Fade Into You Lyrics 16 years ago
what it means to me:
she thought she finally found someone true, and fell in love with them. but the person had many walls built up, she tried to reach through them and show how much she cares. she thinks he is damaged and has a dark perception of the world. he doesn't really show himself.

she realizes she will never really get through to him. he won't let her. he doesn't, or can't really love her back. what she thought was inside of him really isn't there (but she loves him anyway).

she looks to him and sees "nothing" because what she originally saw in him doesn't really exist. and that "nothing" has become truth to her. she has to remind herself he can't give back.

i believe the "truth" she looks to him to see, is also the depressing realization that she can't look to someone else to make her happy. he taught her this sad truth.

she doesn't normally open up to people easily either, but she offered her heart to him, to be her home, and welcomed his. deep in his mind, he knows. he realizes how much she loved him, but it's too late. and doesn't matter. his heart is too protected, but he smiles knowing what she has given him.

...and she fades into him. i think this means she loved him so much he became everything to her. at first she looked to him as someone to make her happy, but ended up trying to be everything to make him happy. and lost herself.
i think it also means that she begins to see the darkness in him, in herself. she is hurt and depressed and has lost hope. it's like looking in a mirror.

after everything she thinks it is strange he never knew how much she really wanted to care and how sincere she was and wanted to be the one to make him happy and for him to be the one to make her happy. what could have been. the hurt he was causing her. she loved him for what he was. he's too messed up and self-centered to appreciate it. or just didn't feel the same way.

i think it's about disappointment. a broken heart. and a damaged soul.

maybe the darkness also becomes part of what makes him so real to her. accepting truth in disappointment and hurt. he has damaged her, she can't trust her own perception of reality. and now she has to build her own walls. the song sounds final, like there is a loss.

i think she continues to love him from a distance, but she is done.

part of her believes she understood him and that he would have loved her if only he really knew. the other part of her knows the truth.
