NOFX – Linoleum Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's about a bum. liNOLeUM He combs the beach for change to scrape by. He sleeps on the bus, in the jail cell, on the floor of bathrooms. He's got a smelly dog named Dog. What a bum, what a pathetically marvelous lifestyle! |
Eagles – The Last Resort Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I get the feeling this song is about the beauty and brilliance of the Rocky Mountains and how terrible it is that the wilderness of the USA is dying off. "She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee.. She heard about a place people were smilin' They spoke about the red man's way, and how they loved the land And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide Seeking a place to stand or a place to hide" The Rocky Mountains are obviously referred to quite often as 'The Great Divide' I think this is what Don Henley means. It talks about how happy the people are there, how they live off the land in 'the red man[indians']'s ways. There were people arriving to this wilderness from all walks of life to escape. "Can't wait to tell you all, what it's like up there And they called it paradise" This part, the main character is saying she can't wait to write back to her family about how awesome it is "up there" (up there obviously being in the Rocky Mountains) "I don't know why Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high" "The towns got their 'high'" off the beauty of the mountains and the serene feel of the whole place. "Then the chilly winds blew down Across the desert through the canyons of the coast, to the Malibu Where the pretty people play, hungry for power to light their neon way and give them things to do" The chilly winds of the Rockies blew west to California, and the rich pretty people living there were just looking for things to do- -completely ignorant of the happiness and contentment that was achieved by those living in nature in the Rockies. "Some rich men came and raped the land, Nobody caught 'em Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus, people bought 'em" Rich guys came in and built hotels and lodges and Theme Parks and exploited the beauty of the land so they could make more money. The part that says "Jesus People bought 'em" I believe is not literally mentioning Jesus as He is, but rather using the name in vain. Eg. "Jesus, what have you done Bill?!" "And they called it paradise The place to be They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea" The white men who raped the land and put up a bunch of attractions for people to come in advertised it as paradise. I'm not quite sure what the reference to "the sun sinking in the sea" is about, because obviously there is no sea around the Rocky Mountains. However, the sun does sink in the west which means from atop the Rocky Mountains it would appear to be sinking off into the Pacific coast. "You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina just like the missionaries did, so many years ago They even brought a neon sign: "Jesus is coming" Brought the white man's burden down Brought the white man's reign" I believe Laihana is referring to the city in Hawaii (on the island of Maui) In this part of the song, Don Henley is basically saying you can leave everything and escape to Hawaii living off the land as well, but "the man" has infiltrated purity of nature there as well. Missionaries already came in and forced their ways upon Hawaiians. "Who will provide the grand design? What is yours and what is mine? 'Cause there is no more new frontier We have got to make it here" ^THAT is probably my favorite section of the song. "Who will provide the grand design? What is yours and what is mine?" is basically calling attention to the fact that people have no God-given right to OWN land. "'Cause there is no more new frontier We have to make it here" -This means that if we allow "The Man" to take over and exploit The Rocky Mountains, there will be no more new frontier for us to explore in America for the most part. This line points out the importance of mankind preserving nature to always allow us to have a place to escape to where things are always new and changing. "We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds, in the name of destiny and the name of God" Although it may feel good at the time to juice all we can out of the land, in the end we will regret it and we will be needing a place to escape to. Man has attempted to justify his infestation of the western United States by coining the term 'manifest destiny' and by missionaries telling themselves God wanted them to go in and take over those areas. "And you can see them there, On Sunday morning They stand up and sing about what it's like up there They call it paradise I don't know why You call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye" Sunday mornings, people are on the Rocky Mountains singing to God the creator and thanking him so greatly for the majesty of his creations. They are loving the Rocky Mountains with all their hearts and call it their paradise, but they sit back and allow more people to come in and industrialize, commercialize, and destroy this last beautiful frontier of the United States. If we don't change soon, we may as well kiss our paradise goodbye. |

Third Eye Blind – Wake for Young Souls Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I would like to change the lyrics for the purpose of my own personal interpretation of the music, however, i will address this change as i come across it Here is my interpretation: "i have your face in a photo in high school when you were alive but that's all I have and I can't remember who I was myself then who we are now, who we are who we are now, who we are where does time go now on a wake for young souls" As the times change, people change i think the lyrics sound more like: "is who we are now who we are? where does time go..." that way he's saying: 'who we are right now--does that define who we are as an identity?' because back in high school we were different did we still hold the same identity? we seem like completely different people now... aand that is the deep meaning this song places on my heart. 3eb has an EXCELLENT habit of placing things on my heart through their lyrics... |
The Cranberries – Dreams Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Absolutely love all of the lyrics. This is my favorite song by the Cranberries, the voices are so astoundingly beautiful! " A totally amazing mind So understanding and so kind You're everything to me " I love how personal these lyrics feel, whatever the Cranberries set out to accomplish, they certainly succeeded in mesmerizing me. |
Third Eye Blind – Darkness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
UGH wat is the meaning of these lines: "I want you to love me Like you did before you knew me And I never thought there'd be any help for somebody like me A vacancy" those hit me the hardest in the song but i cant determine the exact meaning perhaps: he wants her to love him again like she loved the idea of having someone perfect she used to fantasize about the perfect person and love him to death and now that they have found each other and been together for a while she doesnt love the idea so much anymore |
Don Henley – The End of the Innocence Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song may have been written on a political basis, but it seems to contain a deeper meaning which stands the test of time. "But I know a place where we can go That's still untouched by men We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by And the tall grass wave in the wind You can lay your head back on the ground And let your hair fall all around me" This is the most beautiful portrayal of a love I have ever heard. It borders on the romanticism of Jackson Browne lyrics, yet it doesn't have quite the same catch at the end. In most of Jackson Browne's lyrics about love, he will talk about how it never works how as dreamily as it seemed when you were young (which Bryan Adams does touch on with the lines "happily ever after fails, and we've been poisoned by these fairytales.) Bryan Adams on the other hand remains still to state in the last line of the chorus that: "this is the end of the innocence." This would seem to expose a belief that although the outside world has taken everyone's innocence away from them, there is this magical place we can go together. And if we agree not to spoil it, we can enjoy our innocence for a while without interference from the outside world. I am in no way stating that my explanation represents Bryan Adams' true feelings on the subject; but rather my own personal interpretation of the lyrics. |
Chevelle – The Red Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I must agree with franchise0002000: This song is about gunning down your friends in school who call you a freak....The red, is symbolic for infrared laser sight on a gun. .."when his sight goes red again" This was the most interesting view on the lyrics that I had read. However, I assume most of you are correct in it being about someone striking back for being bullied. |
Phantom Planet – In Our Darkest Hour Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree, the whole song may be a metaphor, but you cant ignore the references to the "darkest hour" as being in a burning building, or something on fire. "I've got so much shinning left before I'm out" Maybe he is too young to die in this. "I learn to regret Just once toss of that fateful cigarette" You toss a cigarette in the wrong place, and a fire is bound to start. "Yeah, it began with a spark Then a flame Grew into a fire The spread out again And I just woke up here surrounded by the whole thing" So after he tosses that cigarette he takes a little nap in the house. He wakes up and the whole thing had become an inferno. "I can't see a thing Through the smoke And If I could breathe I'd try not to choke Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, nowhere to go" He is trapped in the house--no way to escape. "I think the end is near" Self explanatory. So tell me I am taking the song way too literally, but you can't ignore the obvious references to my conclusion. |

Tom Petty – Room At The Top Lyrics | 16 years ago |
IwriteToo is right. During the recording of Tom's Echo album he was dealing with a lot of stress, divorcing his old wife, and inevitable existentialism. According to many of the Heartbreakers band mates and Tom's closest friends he was having a very difficult time coping. There was even a point in his life where he lived in a chicken coop with nothing but heroine and a scruffy beard. Many people think that because of all this, his Echo album reflects a sad depressing point in his life and is therefor one of his least successful albums. In my opinion the album shines through with a gleam of hope in all of the songs. Echo is actually one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Regardless, Room At The Top is unarguably an essentially significant song in Tom Petty's collection of songs on an American dream. |

Everything But the Girl – Mirrorball Lyrics | 16 years ago |
From start to finish Mirrorball is one of the most beautiful pieces of art i have ever heard. A good house track eases the listener in a deep trance and drains his or her emotions occasionally sparking sporadic thoughts outside of the lyrics. This song does much more than that. The way the words are put together simply begs to share your memories. The song interacts with the listener celebrating commiserating and often times losing him/her in the beat all the way through. You know you have a winning artist when a track can Talk to you. But of course. This interpretation and critique is just my humble opinion... |
Brandtson – Throwing Rocks Tonight Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Oh my i cannot believe the lack of comments for this song. Such a wonderful sound to it. It would appear after reading the lyrics that the narrator had some interrogating to do. "I brought you here tonight to finally get to your insides. Close the drapes and lock the door." Wants the person to tell the truth. Wants answers. Plenty of time, we won't leave until i get the information from you. "Now all we have is time, So break it over my head. Blink your eyes once for "yes" and twice for "no" I'm listening. Take your time as you decide We have all night to do this. You're not going anywhere. Tie your ankles to this chair." Hey look all i wanted was the truth, don't hate me for this. You're so stubborn--refusing to give me what i need from you. Look, I'm not a bad person; I'm just in the dark and i need a clue. "I'm just trying to break my fall. I meant you no harm at all. So go on, be you. So strong and so cruel. It's just a thought I had. It's really not that bad." |

Midtown – Give it Up Lyrics | 16 years ago |
well i'd say it means some girl falls for him and he is trying to convince her that he isn't the one for her In any case. This is tied for Midtown's best song along with Get It Together IMO. I love this song so much because it has such a diverse tune to it. It seems like every line in the song is just perfectly transitioned in from the best pieces of all the best songs together. :] |

Tom McRae – Ghost Of A Shark Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I know this sounds cheesey but, as I was listening to this song I was reflecting on the book I had just read by journalist Jon Krakauer- Into The Wild. It's about Chris McCandless a twenty some year old guy "from a well-to-do family [who] hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. He Had given his entire $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself..." This song sounds eerily reminescent of the story, and although Chris died up in Alaska on his own and latter part of his life may have been based on nothing but youthfull fantasies, I can't help but want something like that for myself. Anyways, the song, even though that's not what it's about, still feels as if it's calling me to some sort of life like that. Seems as though the majority of my own life has been based in fantasy as most of the great memories in my mind are of things I've read or seen or saw or heard about but never experienced. Oh Well... |
