Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan Lyrics | 10 years ago |
What? For one thing, 9x6 = 54, and 8x7 = 56, neither are 30. Secondly, rectangles dont have circumference, they have perimeter. And thirdly, multiplying the length x width gives you area, not perimeter. You add to get perimeter. |
Radiohead – Give Up the Ghost Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I agree very much with medt's comments above. Anyone else see a correlation between the lyric "...into your arms" and the album title "King of Limbs," in that a limb is an arm? So the King of Limbs, whatever that metaphor might be refering to, would be the supreme apotheosis in which things like "ghosts" are given up into. |
Phoenix – Countdown Lyrics | 14 years ago |
My favorite song. Sick for the big sun.. no idea what it means but it makes so much sense. |
Phoenix – 1901 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah, this guy probably also complains about how crappy mainstream music is... but when music that he likes is actually coming into the mainstream, then its suddenly tarnished? Stupid. If you wrote a song and it made people happy, why would you care who those people are and whether theyre "cool" or not? Wouldnt you want to make as many people like your music as possible? Regardless of money, which, by the way Udaho, did you buy this album? Furthermore, if you were in charge of marketing an ad for your product or movie trailer, wouldnt you use music that you liked? Now, a logical complaint could be made if your favorite song now makes you think of Miller Chill when you listen to it, but dont be so pretentious to say that only you and your hipster friends are allowed to like something that for once doesnt contribute to dumbing down the general public. |
Evangelicals – Skeleton Man Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think you're right, very clever! Sounds like he's describing how cold relationships in the past have made him callous in the metaphor of a heartless skeleton. Then he meets someone who starts the "skin replacing bone," but then the "little secrets while I'm not here" begins to bring him back to his skeleton ways. |
Evangelicals – Paperback Suicide Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The melody word structure of the part that goes "lower it down in the dirt with the devil. let it on down and there it goes" is taken directly from the T Rex song 'Ride A White Swan'. Its so close I think it has to be an intentional homage. |
Fleet Foxes – Sun It Rises Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I hear "Sun risin' over my head In the morning window Hold me dear into the night Sun it will rise soon enough Sun risin', dangeling there Golden infant in the sky" |
The Walkmen – The Blue Route Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is a great song, and this album is a masterpiece - my favorite of the year! I think in this song "What happened to you?" is referring to an improvement of some kind in this person, as opposed to a change for the worse, which it usually means and which I initially thought. |
Fleet Foxes – Ragged Wood Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song is great, but it sounds like the guitar part is directly taken from My Morning Jacket's "Golden." This is a dangerous thing for them to do, considering that he already sounds exactly like Jim James (the MMJ vocalist). |
Spoon – Don't Make Me A Target Lyrics | 16 years ago |
You cant do that. I devoke your revocation. |
Vetiver – Idle Ties Lyrics | 16 years ago |
You should definitely check out T-rex's album 'Electric Warrior' |
T. Rex – The Slider Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I thought it was weird that this one was missing. Anyway, typical Bolanish lyrics. Its about a car ...or being in love ...or drugs or sex or existentialism. |
The Walkmen – Don't Get Me Down (Come On Over Here) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Dont waul? Haha, "Cheetah dont get me down"? Im not sure that those lyrics are quite right, no offense to bkat004. This album has really been growing on me a lot recently after being very disappointed with it since it came out. But there are definitely many hidden gems. |
The Walkmen – Brandy Alexander Lyrics | 16 years ago |
You win |
Spoon – The Beast and Dragon, Adored Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think that the album title Gimme Fiction might have, at least in part, been inspired by a song called 'Friction' by Television in which he says "Gimme Friction." Television had a very short (2 year, 2 album!) career in the late 70s, and their debut album, Marquee Moon, is the best overlooked album of that decade. I know Britt got the name Spoon from the song of the same name by a band named Can, also from the 70s and of similar cult status. He also mentions a lot of songs by Iggy Pop in his songs, i.e. "Shake Appeal", "Down on the Street", and "Some Weird Sin. So, theres a pretty good chance that Britt was influenced by Television as well, and that Gimme Fiction is derived from Gimme Friction. The play on words in Gimme Fiction works on many levels though and is really clever for a lot of reasons. |
Animal Collective – Winter Wonder Land Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Its hard to think of a single word to describe the Animal Collective's sound, but I think it is the most organic music that Ive ever heard. |
Animal Collective – Leaf House Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The title initially made me think of House Of Leaves too, and the Animal Collective's abstraction definitely resembles it (being probably the most abstract book I've ever read). But actually the lyrics make me think more of a short story by Ray Bradbury called There Will Come Soft Rains. Wikipedia summarizes it better than I could: "This story is about a house in an apocalyptic world, and the technology that resides there, unfazed by the damages of nuclear war. The house is fully automated and sensitive to its owners and their requests and needs. Unaware of the absence of its owners, though aware of other external and internal disruptions, such as the weather and birds attempting to land on it, it continues to serve the dead family. Throughout the story, the house makes breakfast, disposes of it uneaten, and performs various domestic tasks." |
Animal Collective – The Purple Bottle Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is like bottled musical endorphins. That said, the last couple minutes are pure Dixie, weird... |
Spoon – Don't Make Me A Target Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Being from Texas myself, I hate how it is always associated with Bush when he is not really a fair representative of the people in the state. Just like he isnt really a fair representative of what everyone in America thinks, even though he is from America just like he's from Texas. I think thats kind of what this song is talking about in a way, except more specifically in the case of nuclear attack. Why should I be the target of nuclear war when I had absolutely nothing to do with the horrible decisions made by some dipsh*ts in office. I also love how he never specifically mentions Bush, but leaves it as more of an abstract concept while alluding to the "dialect drawls" and such. Bush isnt evil, hes a great guy, the problem is that he should be the owner of the Texas Rangers and not the president of the US. Im sure Britt Daniel feels the same misrepresentation from our fellow statesman. Have you been to Texas? Never heard of King Kong? Come to Austin or San Antonio! |
Devendra Banhart – Queen Bee Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is transcendent. |
Destroyer – Your Blood Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I have a feeling that this has a lot of references to the Vancouver art/ music scene, of which I know little, but thats just a guess. The chorus seems to be about being inspired by something that you genuinely like and is a breath of fresh air from the usual and pretentious. I understand the apology to the dead music writer's brides to be talking about his penchant for lifting lines from other songs for use in his own? The choice between blood vs blues I think is referring to suicide... or abortion anyone? |
Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think that cccfffvvv had the best interpretation in my opinion on page 2, great job! Especially with the water not being able turn back into snow, very clever. I think that this is one of the most straightforwardof her songs in my interpretation, i think its simply about meeting someone that fascinates you in a common public place and being incredibly shy. One thought on the title that I saw no one had mentioned: She tells us that shes in a store, and obviously her mind is completely occupied upon this person, so maybe shes just absent-mindedly going over some random produce. |
Joanna Newsom – Swansea Lyrics | 16 years ago |
She makes lines about gnawing on someone's bones sound like its the sweetest thing that anyone has ever put to music. |
Joanna Newsom – This Side of the Blue Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This album has to be the greatest of any in American folk music. When I first heard her I thought her voice was very abrasive, but despite how annoyed I might be, my finger always hovered over the skip button and I could never seem to be able to change the song. There's something extremely haunting about her music and her lyrics. Now I hear her singing as genuine and her voice charming. Her songs are so unique... the structure twisted like a pretzel, and filled with so many gems where the music and words come together beautifully and bounce around in your head for weeks. |
Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Wow, Im really blown away by Joanna's writing. So many interwoven metaphors! You guys have some great interpretations, I'll try my luck at a couple: I the meteorite crashes in the first couple lines and that is what scares the birds into flight. The next couple lines with the "sport of the Pharoah" and the "Pharisees dragging a comb through the meadow" is describing some type of researchers or even police that got word of the fallen meteor and are looking for where it landed to retrieve it. Her choice of wording here makes me think of baby Moses arriving by chance. "helps me find my way back in from the place I have been" [in the morning] suggests that the two sisters went out to investigate in the night and found the meteorite. I think the skipping of stones on the water is an analogy to the meteor in that some meteors skip over the Earth's atmosphere or are incinerated and never fall to Earth. Since the first time I heard this song its lyrics and music have portrayed to me an unknown doom looming on the horizon. For the first few times I heard it I thought it was about the end of the world or the birth of Christ's second coming. |
Sufjan Stevens – All the Trees of the Field Will Clap Their Hands Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well said Coysoul. |
Beck – Cell Phone's Dead Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I just noticed the main synthesizer (or synthesized bass or whatever it is) in this song is very similar to the morse code message for SOS: short short short / long long long / short short short. Instead the song goes OOSOOSOOSOOS. Its close. I just thought about it because of the line: "Now fix the beat Now break the rest Make a kick drum sound Like an S.O.S." |
Doves – Black And White Town Lyrics | 16 years ago |
spot on, luisagiffard, this is Heatwave. But they made it something new, and I love it. |
Devendra Banhart – Lover Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think there might be some sexual innuendos in this song. |
Radiohead – Weird Fishes/Arpeggi Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Nevermind the fishes This song is Unrequited love. |
The Bees – Wash in the rain Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Great! Great! Great! Great! Love the Bees! Love them! |
Devendra Banhart – The Body Breaks Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this song is about the relationship between the body and the soul, and it contrasts the deterioration of the body against the flame inside that burns on. Also, its about sex. |
Devendra Banhart – Samba Vexillographica Lyrics | 16 years ago |
According to this site: http://www.alwaysontherun.net/devendra.htm#s12 , vexillography is the designing of flags, and the translation is: The German flag Has three Gentle blisters full of Flowers and grass in its feet In its feet And they're named Stei and Broshka And look and how they’re going to teach Look at how they’re going to teach The flag of California has 10 Broken legs full of Your tender tears That come out backwards Come out backwards Come out backwards Come out backwards And we, we, we, we Like it that That you move here, love That you move here, my love The flag of Asilah that leaves From Medina is pink and divine for my heart Hear-ar-ar-ar For my heart Hear-ar-ar-ar And although the people are poor They know how to live happy! (happy!) They know how to live happy He has one She has a flag, flag They have one Everyone has a flag Flag Fuck that shit! Ah-ah: flag! Ah-ah: flag! Ah-ah: flag! Ah-ah: flag! There's still one more missing A flag ??! The flag of Life and death is part Of all the people To cross through the point Or lunar passage Lunar passage Lunar, lunar, lunar passage Before arriving to the Kingdom of the Sun In your way, with or without a flag Give me butter Bring me butter |
Devendra Banhart – Seaside Lyrics | 16 years ago |
These are the lyrics from the book that came with the cd. Also, at the bottom of this page it says: "The next time you're in the water Pretend the water's alive and give it a kiss kiss kiss kiss kiss and you will feel love and stop pretending and just keep on kissing." Oh Devendra, you so crazy but seriously, great song! |
Vetiver – Angels' Share Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think its "His bottle, the excuse again" But as to the title: "The expression The Angels Share refers to the quantity of the whiskey or wine, which is lost to evaporation during the aging process. In grade school we were told that it was the angels job to look after all of us. In todays perilous world, that must be hauntingly demanding work, which would certainly merit a few perks." -taken from http://lautertu.ehost.com/spiritednewsfromthehearthland/id12.html |
Sufjan Stevens – All the Trees of the Field Will Clap Their Hands Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I love this album, its great music that just happens to be about spirituality. The only other album I can think of that pulls this off better is "All things must pass" by George Harrison, which I highly recommend. Probably the best album by any Beatle after they broke up. But this songs is totally about Ents. |
Sufjan Stevens – All Good Naysayers, Speak Up! Or Forever Hold Your Peace! Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I would love to hear this song accompanied by a marching band percussion section. |
Devendra Banhart – Bad Girl Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this song was modeled around "Dont Let Me Down" by the Beatles. |
Devendra Banhart – The Other Woman Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Haha, wow, I noticed that too. It took a few listens and a pair of headphones, but he cant be saying anything else. You beat me to the post. |
Radiohead – Weird Fishes/Arpeggi Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is some of the most beautiful music Ive ever heard. So simple! "Id be crazy not to follow follow where you lead Your eyes They turn me" |
Vetiver – Idle Ties Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Put on the tape that you made for me Its got Marc Bolan and Vashti Marc Bolan was the frontman for the 60s/70s band T-rex, Vashti Bunyan was a songwriter from that era as well. |
The Flaming Lips – Mr. Ambulance Driver Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Am I nuts, or does it sometimes sound like hes saying "Wanda isnt here anymore" instead of "One that isnt here anymore"? If so, I guess it would fit in with the albums wand themes and also be a girl's name. |
Radiohead – 15 Step Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think "15 steps then a sheer drop" is referring to walking the plank. That would fit in with "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" too |
Devendra Banhart – So Long Old Bean Lyrics | 16 years ago |
In the back of the book that came with the cd it says "Tanks to Captain Bean & his first mate Roddy Corvo for use of their beautiful schooner 'Cochon de la Mar" to record Seaside on." So I guess this is the same old Bean. |
Devendra Banhart – Tonada Yanomaminista Lyrics | 16 years ago |
When I saw him live he said this song was about when he and his friends got lost in the jungle somewhere between Venezuela and Brazil and followed some indigenous people that they met there. Sounds about right. |
The Flaming Lips – Vein of Stars Lyrics | 16 years ago |
To me it seems like the vein of stars is referring to constellations, and that its using astrology to talk about superstition in general. Its considering the concept that maybe life isnt predetermined, despite your horoscopic astrological sign, and maybe neither is death. 25, 26, 27 could be just numerology and more superstition, or it could very well be wayne has hidden some treasure somewhere and these are the coordinates. I wouldnt put it past him. Do you live for death, or do you live for life? Should you be a good person because you are scared what will happen to you when you die, or should you do it for another, maybe less self-centered, reason. Maybe you might not need to worry about it anymore then? |
Devendra Banhart – This Is the Way Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Wow, I know exactly what he's talking about! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who knows about holy floating empress beards (the best kind of empress beard)! |
