Arcade Fire – Rococo Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Actually, I was just thinking that. Even if the reference is merely by chance, I think Lady Gaga is a good representation of the modern kids. Modern kids often try to emulate something because they believe it makes them hip, but they don't think about meaning or consequences. Kids today are a bit too tame, not necessarily in a traditional sense but because they're too busy copying the trends to really understand their own actions. It's as if our generation has became so detached to anything of meaning that we just keep creating meaningless copies. |
Mumford & Sons – Timshel Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"Ladder to the stars" refers to Genesis 28:12-15 in which Jacob having fled from Esau falls asleep and dreams of God talking to him. In his vision he sees a ladder to the stars in which angels were ascending and descending from it (heaven). God also speaks to Jacob in his dream, reassuring him that he is with him wherever he goes. Not sure how this relates to the context of the song, but that's the scriptural reference for the phrase. My thoughts are that "mother of your child" refers to a single woman who became pregnant to an unwanted child and is now facing the difficult decision of whether to keep him. As others have noted, it does make sense that this song may refer to abortion. But I'm really unsure about the rest of this beautifully complex song. |
Arcade Fire – Ready to Start Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Personally I think this song is about growing past the innocence of youth and becoming disillusioned with the world. However, I disagree with the idea that this song is hopeful about the future. Rather, I think the song is wistful towards the future, wishing for something that's long sense gone and making up for the loss by starting to pretend. "If the Businessmen drink my blood, like the kids in art school said they would" In particular, these lines represent the conflict between the dream versus the scorn of corporate American. When were young we want to believe that the dream is possible without giving in to corporate America. But now the narrator is realizing that in order to achieve the dream you must be willing to let corporate America trample you. "And I guess I'll just begin again You say can we still be friends" Now that he realizes he's been caught up in the dream, the narrator feels disillusioned but is ready to try again. But this time he realizes his curse, and hears the doublet-talk of the business men. "We can still be friends," double-talk in business, referring to how businesses often make immoral alliances in order to make a profit. All the kids have always known That the emperor wears no clothes But they bow down to him anyway 'cause it's better then being alone. To me this stanza is probably about discovering the disillusionment with politics. Many people often realize that most of the political candidates are evil or misleading, but we still vote for them because they're the lesser of two evils. Bowing down to something wrong, is socially considered the lesser of two evils, because it's better than people looking down on you. |
Arcade Fire – Ready to Start Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Agreed. "No Clothes" rather than new clothes makes more sense especially with the lines that follow. Personally, I think this might be a political statement about how sometimes people want to believe in something that's wrong, simply because they don't want to be alone. People want to be part of something bigger and often ignore the truth for the sake of belonging. |
Switchfoot – Sing It Out Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Probably the single best, most eloquently composed track on the entire album, in my view. Every time I listen I find myself swept into this beautiful serenity that only God can bring, the light in all my storms. For me this song, pieces together the complex metaphor of the Christian walk, the myriad hopes and the desperation we find ourselves clinging to like a concrete block. More than anything it's about raw plea from the depths of the soul to run after Christ, in the midst of a thousand distractions. Sometimes we forgot that seeking the divine creator's melody for our lives, is the purpose of our creation and we need those little reminders. . So many times we find ourselves running life's labyrinth's, shuffling our feet trying to escape the madness that consumes us, without once stopping to seek God. In a way, this song summarizes the way I feel when I surrender my heart to true worship of Christ. I'm holding on I'm holding on to you My world is wrong My world is a lie that's come true And I fall in love with the ones that run me through When all along all I need is you So beautiful. Probably my favorite part of the song, since it reminds me of that peace I find in singing to God, pouring out all my troubles unto him. There's something indescribable about the way true worship can calm the strongest of our storms in life. |
Jon Foreman – Your Love Is Strong Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is beautiful beyond words. Every time we sing this at my college group, it pulls me in closer to Christ. Such a beautiful reminder that Christ is stronger than anything life can deal us. |
Mute Math – No Response Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Maybe this song necessarily isn't about not believing in God, but questioning the intentions of religion itself. They don't have the answers to the yoke religion places on spirituality, and are tired of always being told the answers. Maybe the part about "imaginary friends" refers to the people who pretend to care about us, but only serve to judge us, and leave us hanging in the end. Though I find it hard to believe that Mute Math, being a Christian band would write something necessarily questioning the existence of God. It more or less sounds to me like He's fed-up with all the multi-faceted hypocrisy and legalism that often consumes the very soul of the Church. |
Mute Math – Odds Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Honestly, I think this song is about trying to find a voice in a world supposedly run by consummerism. By casting our votes, we think we're making a difference, but sometimes one voice doesn't really matter against a tide of false prophets. People say "We'll be better off" choosing between the lesser of two evils, but sometimes we're fighting a war that we really can't win on our own. |
Ra Ra Riot – Each Year Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I totally love how this song is about the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" which is probably one of the few books I read in High School that really struck a chord with me. At first I didn't get the references in the song, but I kinda had a feeling that it was related to the book. This song just amazes me all the more now that I actually understand all the references, I might have to read the book again sometime as well. |
Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics from this portion are wrong: Standing next to me My mind holds the key My body is a . . . ... I'm living in an age Still turning in the night But when I get to the doorway There's no one in sight I'm living in an age Realizing I'm dancing With the one I love But my mind holds the key You're still next to me My mind holds the key Correct lyrics (these are taken directly from the album booklet): You're standing next to me. My mind holds the key. My body is a... ... I'm living in an age that screams my name at night, But when I get to the doorway there's no one in sight My body is a cage that keeps me from dancing with the one I love, but my mind holds the key. You're standing next to me. My mind still holds the key. |
South – A place in displacement Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I've never quite understood the meaning behind this song, but I think it's talking about finding your place in a broken world. Sometimes in our attempt to belong somewhere, we deny ourselves for what society says is true. "Face to face alone all the time", I believe this line is talking about who we are when we're alone & nobody's looking. |
The Shins – Girl Sailor Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think a big part of understanding this song would actually relate back to Shakespeare's Hamlet. In Hamlet Ophelia was a young woman who went mad (giving away flowers to various male characters before drowning herself in the river). Hence the title of this song, seems to refer to a girl who is in trouble & close to drowning. "The gutter may profess its love then follow it with hesitation for there are just so many of you out there for rent"- many girls have made her mistake & he sees her repeating it, falling into the trap. "And I cannot lecture you"- in his heart the singer desires to help her, but realizes its fruitless so he pleads with her. "You are not some saint who's above giving someone a stroll through the flowers"-Basically, this line is another reference to Shakespeare's Ophelia meaning that she is promiscuous. |
The Decemberists – Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"both of these people seem to be dead. anyone else get that? and that even dead, they're both together, sewn in the ground" Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. It's kinda hinted at when they both sing the lines "Look for me with the sun-bright sparrow I will come on the breath of the wind" together. It seems as if she died in childbirth which was a common cause of death back up until the 20th century. |
Lifehouse – First Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Also (poolka) you took that phrase out of context when you tried to refute the idea that song was about being in love. If you read the line carefully it's always accompanied with something "Like being in love, she said, for the first time". Therefore this wording would imply that she's saying they both feel that it's like being in love for the first time. However, as stated in my earlier comment I think this is about a later point in a relationship. |
Lifehouse – First Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Although I'd normally agree poolka that many lifehouse songs do have a christian undertone, I don't think that's what this song is talking about. Though I'm not saying that a lot of Lifehouse songs do have that type of dual meaning. Such a hidden explanation wouldn't make sense in this song. Especially where they say "looking at you" and they do use the word "she", indicating a real person. I have the album & checked the lyrics. I think this song is about rediscovering romance with someone you already knew you were in love with. Like that moment after a big fight when you reconcile & find a new kind of love for each other, in spite of the pain. |
The Killers – On Top Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I kinda agree with the intrepretation about the song being about the industry. I don't think Brandon meant that he was referring to the band's position at the time, but rather how being famous gets to a person's head. |
Yellowcard – Light Up the Sky Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is a very interesting song. I'm not sure what fire fight means though, probably doesn't really mean anything I would guess. Or I think he may just be saying something to do w/war? But those are all just guesses. This song is so romantic! Honestly, it's really beautiful & sweet for him to say that he'd die for the girl he loves-not the least bit morbid to me, though. |
The Kooks – Eddie's Gun Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I have to admit it does have a nice beat but, a not so nice meaning. I don't think I can ever listen to this song again, thinking about the meaning. But the interview was simply hilarious. |
Death Cab for Cutie – Title and Registration Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this song is actually a huge metaphor about a guy who is in a fruitless relationship that has started going sour. "There's nothing to keep my fingers warm" The guy is searching for some sort of comfort in his relationship, hence the term warmth. "And all I find are souvenirs from better times" Obviously pictures from when they were happy/in love. "gleam of your taillights fading east" This refers to their love slowly dying and becoming distanced. And she begins searching for something better as indicated in the next line. "I was searching for some legal document" Basically, he's searching for some last hope to prove that their relationship still has a chance. Later realizing that things can't change for the better "Because it's too important to stay the way it's been". At the end he's regretting everything blaming it on himself ("There's no blame for how our love did slowly fade") because there's no other explanation. |
